I buy cereal when it's on sale. Rarely pay more than $2.50 - $3.00/box.

Majority of the price, like with any Food Inc. product, is in the lovely, colorful and deceitful packaging. Oh yeah, and gots to pay Madison Avenue for da brilliant advertising campaigns that tell you how healthy most of that crapola is for your kiddies.

I usually stick with organic and/or natural stuff. Won't touch anything with high fructose corn syrup, sucrose and lots of yummy chemicals/preservatives in it.

I go to Wal-Mart. They sell the Malt-O-Meal cereal in bags for $1.00 and it's Made in the USA.

You can get their version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc.... It lasts longer and it's just as good.

Now that's funny. How ironic to have someone take a cut at the food industry's marketing machine, and then give a plug for organic food, one of the greatest marketing scams ever concocted:

You think oil and energy are the elephants in the room in the 20-teens? Maybe. But we'll look back on that fondly when food and water are the big issues of the 2020s.

i don't think people choose organic food for supposed higher nutritional content, so i'm not really sure what the purpose of this study is. are there people who actually think organic food will have more nutrients? :huh

actually, the conclusion of this study seems to be.. "Relevant scientific evidence, however, is scarce, while anecdotal reports abound. Although there is an urgent need for information related to health benefits and/or hazards of food products of both origins, generalized conclusions remain tentative in the absence of adequate comparative data."

Its because the corn your cereal is made from is now also being used as a fuel additivie. Supply goes down, prices go up.

Organic food can be terrible for the environment plus if you're eating something like a banana or an orange it doesn't matter.

I know a lot of "green" people who smoke (cigs or pot) - that I don't get.

Can't say why people buy organic, though the nutritional benefit argument is certainly used as part of the marketing ruse:

http://www.organicfoodinfo.net/

I'd be willing to bet that if you were to stand outside a Whole Foods and ask people coming out why they buy organic, you will get a significant group of responders who work "superior nutrition" into their answer.

"Relevant scientific evidence, however, is scarce, while anecdotal reports abound. Although there is an urgent need for information related to health benefits and/or hazards of food products of both origins, generalized conclusions remain tentative in the absence of adequate comparative data."[/I]

Agree with your assessment, which is why I said that there is "no clear difference". Safety is another key marketing point, but there isn't enough evidence to make such claims.

I'm not dismissing organic food out of hand, just pointing out that, like so many other health/lifestyle fads promoted on the web, a lot of the back story is nothing more than anecdotal marketing, with little if any evidence to support the claims.
