I cannot readily imagine having more respect for an electric guitar maker than I have for John Suhr.
Those who purchase his work undeniably have quite an eye for quality.
Long may he run!

nice guitars guys. I love my sherwood green classic with s/s/hum. I have another classic ordered with 3 singles and 1088, for my vintage tone craving. I had a classic T that kicked butt, but it had a slimmer neck and I have grown addicted to the fatter 60's necks, and can't go back! new one will be sonic blue- I love suhrs in those early 60's hot rod colors, candy apple red, fiesta, sonic blue, ocean turq, sherwood green, ice blue, etc. they make me happy:)

Most incredibly evil, cool paint job I've ever seen on a guitar. This one was the Suhr homepage guitar before the current koa example.
I saw that gold dripcaster at the site!!! Awesome!

THAT was the "old me", the "new me" makes Mude run through multiple changes BEFORE, and just near the point where, he submits the order to Steve. Seriously, no self-respecting uber-strat lover can go without a Suhr Standard and a Drop Top Classic. Then, if we're continuing down the vintage trail, ya gotta have a Suhr Tele. Nothing else comes close. Then until JST comes out w/ a mahogany short scale, ya gotta p/u a Cobra or a Cobra S.
After years (and I mean years) of playing Andy's, I played a Suhr Standard w/ all the trimmings (Plek, BFTS, Floyd, CNC precision, SS frets, ripping quilt, etc.). Thoughts? ONLY the BEST playing locking trem, maple neck, I've ever owned.
What is it about Suhr's that I love? They FEEL "broken in", literally seconds after it comes off of Kenny's bench, and resonant. No lie. And w/ the Plek jobs, they are soooooo even and smooth. No dead spots, no fret grabbing, no misfretting. Just the best set-up around. And THAT'S w/ a Floyd bridge.
TAG's are absolutely awesome. BUT, JST Suhr's are completely out-of-this-world fantastic. IF you dig strats or teles, do yourself a favor and try a Suhr.

Yes, it was but it was inspired by others so I don't know how "original" it is...
Here's how it went down...
I got very used to the "Standard" control set up on my Classic and figured I could have the same set up since it was done on the burl maple top limited series T (the one that rossta 1 has posted)...
At about this time, I saw a picture of Ted Witcher's gold top T (shown in this thread) in another thread and was thinking about getting no pickguard just like his... I thought his was a beauty (still do)... It originally would've looked like Ted's but with the flame top over ash, the Pau Ferro board, and the Standard control config... I guess it would've looked more like rossta 1's limited but with the tele pups...
After playing a ton of Suhrs at Tone Merchants, I decided on getting the pickguard because I noticed a difference in tone between pickguard held pups and those in the body... I like the "airy-ness" of a pup in the pickguard and I wanted that sound in the neck position... The shorty pickguard was actually John's suggestion after I went through some pickguards they had lying around and laid them over a freshly cut T body...
I went back later to choose the top... Got to file through them just like eddyrox did (I live 15 minutes from the shop :))
The no dots thing was inspired by shoe's (aka Pete Lacis) Suhrs... I thought his looked so cool... I love it...
The bengal burst over the flame idea was from another guitar that I saw on the Tone Merchants forum (a guy named sicktone's Classic has a quilt top like that; his is a trans orange burst)...
So there you have it... You could almost say that my T is a homage to everyone else's Suhrs... I just wanted all the cool features of all the others that I saw on mine :dude ...
One more thing... I wanted to show off the swamp ash so I had John match the bengal burst on the front with a tobacco burst on the back... Haven't seen that done before so I guess THAT is original...

My Suhr Standard was a great guitar when I bought it, brand new, simply put: the best I've ever played. And the more I play it and play it everyday, and the more it gets "broken in", the better it gets....

the tone is very vintage. It's hard to say what is the effect of the pau ferro neck, it's the first Suhr tele I have and it is so superior to any FEnder custom shop I tried. Perhaps John can say what is the contribution of the pau ferro. Other than that, it's pretty standard, with the most beautiful swamp ash body I have seen.
Mark -
I remember that Tele from overland. Really a beautiful neck. Overland has ordered a few of the Pau Ferro necks and they look and feel great.
Evan.
Lovely neck!!
Overland Express have some NICE Suhrs at the moment...... 2 Stunning Bahama Blue Quilts and a Lovely Flame Carve Top that would make an excellent little sister for my Quilt Carve top....... hmmmmm:)

I just confirmed my order and the finish was listed as "candy apple red" (w/o the reference to "metallic")

Indeed, candy apple red is always metallic.

Well I cannot really post in the appreciation contest but by next week this one should be here :)
I am so excited ! This is the first guitar I have bought in years. I always wanted to build my own. After many attempts I have finally decided it is best left to the pro's like Mr. Suhr.
I built a lot of nice ones but never felt like it was right.
Funny though I had heard of these Suhrs but never really thought of buying one as I never have seen one in person. A recent thread I have been reading about Suhr VS the Fender CS models really got me thinking. Many said they had bought them or many of them & they were all great. That is a big difference from the big companies hit & miss record. So I searched for a few days & found this one. I can hardly wait.

Thanks guys
I am very excited
Looking forward to all the little things I have read about that make a Suhr so special.
Originally I wanted to find something with the 1088 bridge & the Klusons. I thought I would keep it as close to old style as possible. This one had the standard bridge & Sperzels but I have heard good things about those too. Plus once I have gas it usually grows at a pretty alarming rate :p
Thanks again & I will post when it arrives.
Mike
You will have no problems with th standard trem and sprezels! I bought my Suhr from a guy (from this forum) in in New York (I flew all the way from England to pick it up) it was a Cold April Day 2004. I was moving to Australia and on the way I stopped in Fiji (which was about as humid as you can get) I am now in Australia and in the summer it was over 40C (over 100F) every day for months and as arid as you can get and guess what...
not only did I not have to have the guitar re-set up but by April 05 I didn’t even have to tune her!!!! Not even a tweak of the high E!! I had to change eventually… I wore those elixir to the bone!
I am an Engineer and this Carve top Baby defies the laws of physics!! It is like a contest now to see how long she lasts each time…….. not to mention that she is the most beautiful guitar you have ever seen!!

All I can say is I'm done, wrecked, finished
I posted on the Suhr site telling John how I think I now have to part out my homebuilt Strat & Tele. After playing this I have tried to be fair & play the others but.................well you know.
Funny but when it first arrived I slowly opened the case & when I saw it I said what the #*!& they sent me a frettless guitar?
I had never seen a fret guard before.........:D
I strummed it & it rang out. I knew it was going to be a great one. Plugging it into my SFDR I could not believe the sounds. So beautiful!
The playing..........man-o-man I still cannot get over it. I guess it is a sum of all things. Parts quality, setup & the Plek job + the buzz feiten system must all add up to make this thing feel like silk.
After the first hour or so I wondered if it was too perfect? You know what I mean? I mean I like the blues & it is mainly what I play. With Strats & Teles you have to fight them a bit. Milk out the notes....make them squeel.
But after a few days all worries are gone. I am rewarded with a piece of gear that actually does make me sound better than I am. I never had that happen before.
At first I thought maybe the pups were a bit too boomy for me. But it was the strings. I don't know what brand & they were good but I guess I am use to the D'Addarios. Once I switchd it was less boomy to my ears.
These pups are actually very good aren't they? Have any of you changed them?
I was also worried that this guitar was coming with a Standard trem & Sperzels. I thought I needed the Klusons with the 1088 trem to stay more vintage stratty on the tones. But this is really nice & you cannot fault the new trem for staying in tune.
One last thing..........I bought this online & had never seen a Suhr up close. I was surprised at the nice shave in the lower bout & the neck pocket taper in back.
All adds up to make this super guitar so nice to play.
I could go on & on but you all own one & know
;)
Here are some pics & the spec sheet
My Classic (http://photobucket.com/albums/v90/flying333/Suhr%20Classic/)
Congrats! I know how you feel, I felt the same way when my Suhr arrived as well. I believe stock strings on Suhrs are D'Addarios (they used to be Elixers but they had to change due to the Plek system). My favorite part of mine (other than the asthetics) is the satin neck finish. The more you play it, the better and better it feels, and it feels pretty darn good to begin with.

Thanks Mike
Actually I think it was Elixirs. There was a empty Elixir bag in the case?
Yeah that satin neck mmmmmmmm

As I was leaving Tone Merchants, Suhr sales guy (and ex Tone Merchants owner) Ed Yoon pops in with some new Suhrs... One of them is a 3 V60LP equipped alder Classic for Guthrie Govan with the NEW Silent Coil System... Can't leave yet... I gotta check this out...
I plugged it into the OD 100 and there was nothing except amp hiss... The usual hum of the single coil pup was gone and the V60LP's DO HUM!!!!... I'm not kidding when I say that it was more quiet than a humbucker... Nothing but single coil tone... It was shocking... I'm still blown away...
The process was described to us by Ed... From what I understood, the noise elimination process could also work for p90's but would have to require more "winds"... The process is undergoing patent so maybe I should not get into it but it DOES sound extremely labor intensive...
The result is shocking... That's the only word I could use to describe it...
Some more HERE... (http://www.online-discussion.com/Suhr/viewtopic.php?t=313)

I didn't mean you, thanks for sharing.
It's just a drag for those that have had or are having guitars made. We hear all about how cool it is, for those that can get it. I realize they intend if all goes well to make it available, but as one who had a guitar being built at the time this story came out, I would have just as soon not heard about it!:p
Maybe they will cut a deal for guitars built durring that time;)

I think the crew at Suhr is really excited and just want to share the enthusiasm for what they see as a huge breakthrough in guitar technology (and after hearing the Silent Coil System in action for myself, I have to say I do share that enthusiasm!).
I believe the reason players such as Scott Henderson, Mike Landau and Guthrie Govan received the (very) few guitars with the new system installed is really for the purposes of a "field test", if you will...I'm sure Suhr wants to get the whole system finely tuned and dialed in before offering it to the general public, and that's one heckuva test crew, don'tcha think?
I can tell you the technology really works...it is downright startling hearing that pure single-coil tone without noise. It's going to just be a matter of getting it turned into a feasible product for the consumer. According to Ed over at Suhr, right now, it's really labor-intensive to install, and factoring in other considerations, all in all it's a costly procedure at the moment. I'm sure they'll get everything figured out eventually, but the biggest hurdle...getting it to work...has definitely been cleared, and I think the fellas at Suhr deserve to let out a little "Yee-Haww!!":p

I'm 99% certain that this system requires a significant modification to the actual body of the guitar, so you can't just buy the system off the shelf and install it in your guitar.

The Gold Tele is Maple/Basswood so it is definately more of a rock sounding guitar. Dean Farley just sent me some SOS's and they really made it sound even more killer.
Even C medium solid maple neck, SS frets, mini toggle adds bridge (something I may change) V60lp, V60lp, DSV
Abalone dots and logo
Extra tint to the neck, which looks very cool
I love the gold. Ted's guitar helped inspire me in that color. Both the same gold BTW

Andersonguy,
Glad to hear that you love it! Can't wait until mine is done. Sounds very silmilar to what I spec'd. I was going back & forth with the BRW option but just ended up with the standard Indian RW. I did the SSC, 1088 gridge, mint guard & 6100 ss frets updrades. I also ordered an extra large neck carve. D shaped 1" thick with no taper all the up the neck.
Joe.

thanks for the info.! I love that gold that you and Ted have too-it doesn't have that greenish hue like most gold tops I've seen. That's why I thought John had different varations of gold like Tom A.

great news on the planned 24.75 scale neck.
Could exisiting Suhr T's accomodate/be "retrofitted" w/ the shorter neck or would the overall scale require that the bridge
be mounted at differenct position on the body vs
a 25.25" scale model?

2 Tone SB. (I wish I have picture here)Very classy look.
3 single coils with the SCS. Pure single coil tone with
no noise.
First when I open the case... I played this guitar... Wow!
This guitar sings so great... I kept playing so long, finally
I pluged into my amp... I couldn't work that day.
Wow~! I kept playing this for long time.

Hey Gflat, How does that Pau neck sound compared to maple or mahogany?? I hear they are clear and punchy sounding, but have never tried one.
It's pretty difficult to isolate the effect the neck has on the tone as it's the first koa guitar I've owned, but the overall effect is pretty punchy... very clear and seems quite strong in the midrange... Much warmer sounding than most bolt-ons I've played. Whilst I love the clean tone, it seems best suited to playing through a overdriven or distorted - sounds really tight... I read that Pau Ferro tonally sits somewhere between rosewood and mahogany and I'd probably concur with that.
Unfortunately, due to current circumstances I'm having to play it through a V-Amp rather than my Cornford, something akin to drinking fine wine through a straw I guess, so my experience so far as been less than ideal..

What color is the top one, 284?
Shoreline gold. I have a 64 Jag in that color. The thing is this one is much more modern looking than a Jaguar, or even an old strat, so it seems different, but it ain't . Just the same 60s Fender color.

Man, I've been wanting to get a Strat with a modern look -- meaning no pickguard and chrome knobs -- but I haven't settled on the "right" color. That's definitely a candidate.

I just picked up a Sonic Blue T, alder w/maple top, dark RW board and a bucker in the neck position. I traded Red Lizard my blackguard Suhr for it. Wow, this is a great guitar and I'm playing it all the time. Rock'n'roll machine, big fat tones, harmonics wherever and whenever you want and then you plug it into an amp. . . whew!!! :D
It was made for someone here on the TGP originally and I'm really happy he didn't like it. Oops, it's actually Lake Placid Blue. I still love it.

Thanks for the info John - I've almost saved up enough to get a Pro Series model once they start coming with the SSC system. After that... well it will have to be an OD50 head!

Congrats Pete!!!
I am trying to decide on Number 3!!!

You can do that now, get the Pro and add the Backplate SSC. We wont do the Pro with the built in system.
Cool - I'll start looking. Is it safe to assume the Pro pickups are already suitable for the SSC (i.e. the middle pickup is non RWRP), or will I need to get the system with the one extra pickup?

This is a winning combination. I've installed the backplate SSC on my Custom Shoppe Fender Relic Strat and it really works great and easy to install. I posted a review on the Effects forum because I wasn't sure if this was the forum for it. But it really is extremely effective and I'm very pleased. In my case I have a set of the V60LP Suhr pickups which are my preference, but what's very freeing about this system is you can use most any Strat pickup like Lollar, Rolph, or even vintage Fender, and still retain 100% of the tone, provided all pickups are of the same polarity.

Hey guys
I'm new to Suhr having just traded for this great Suhr T from Suhr Rodney! But after only two days I can tell you I am loving it. The craftsmanship is super and the tones give me something new for the arsenal! Thanks Rodney! These are even still Rodney's pics.
Anyone got a Suhr cherryburst classic to go with this beauty they want to sell me now?

Glad you're digging the Suhr, Wayne. I feel the same about the Matchless. Here's another of my cherryburst Suhrs. This one is the Arched Top model. I'm not quite ready to part with it yet, but thought you might enjoy the pics.

You know and I fully agree, they are beautiful but what I like the most is how they sound. My classic looks wonderful but way more important, it's the best sounding strat I've ever heard.

Hi Kelley,
What a great system! No tone change!
It's hard to believe this. but it's really true.
I have the SSC system on my Suhr custom.
Very very happy with mine.
More students are interested in those.
Did you try your V60LP?

I'm pretty sure you'll have to order a middle pickup replacement since the middle on the Pro Series is likely RWRP for hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4. Since they are machine-wound, there shouldn't be any problems with having a matched set.
