I have a Divided by 13 EDT.
I love many things about it.
It has a head and 212.
A celestion blue and a V30.

My other amp is a Carr Imperial with 410.
It is stock with 4 10 kingpins.
It sounds amazing.

I am wanting to know of tubes and speaker changes that you guys have tried that resulted in better sound.
Primarily I find the bottom end too low and the top too high.
And I would like to thicken the midrange more.

That is just how the EDT sounds. Try a Klon and put the closed back on the cabinet. I also ran NOS preamp tubes. That will make the high end sound less harsh.

I have a Klon. It helps.
Which nos tubes?

I am going to try a cannabis Rex speaker in place of the V30

I have an EDT and love it. It has a Scumback H75 LDHC in it and that was a big improvement over the V30 IMO.

That said, the amp has a ton of low end. I actually run my Low at about 9 o'clock and my High at about 10 o'clock.

If you're running the controls at noon or above, you're going to get a more scooped tone. Dialing them back will give you more apparent mids. There is also a mid boost on the volume knob.

Amperex or Mullards would be first, but RCA aren't bad either.

I wouldn't waste your time trying speakers. The v30 sounds good and adds some mids. Lots of guys try tons of speakers on this amp and come back to the V30.

My favorite speaker I have used with the amp is an ASW KTS60, pricey though. Try the closed back, it will take off some of the high end.

Thanks.
I've dialed the amp many ways.
But my old Carr Imperial just spanks it.
I plugged in my EDT into the 410 and it sounds great.
I thought I isolated the problem to the cab.
I guess I shouldn't say problem.
The EDT sounds great. But the Carr just sounds rounder and punchier.

I bought the EDT used and don't have the back to put on the can.
Maybe I'll see if I can order one from Fred.
When I played the EDT with a band it was jaw dropping.
Lots of compliments.
But at home it sounds paper thin next to my Carr.

Yeah, try the closed back. I heard the same thing. But it "cuts"

These amps are really designed to sound good at band or stage levels. There is a compromise with everything and that is /13s...

Well I do agree with that.
It smokes when I playwith a group.
I'm still gonna try some tubes, speaker changes and see if it will help.
Thanks for the info

The first one I had was as you describe and I eventually sold it. I have another now and run it with a G12H 30 that tames the sizzle of the V30. Running an Amperex 12ax7 in V1 and usually run the low input in class A with the boost up and the damping switch in the quieter position. This really tames the amp. It's cleans are amazing and it takes pedals perfectly. Not sure if this one is different than my first or my ears have changed.

For home use this works great. For higher volume band work the V30 works a bit better with the natural overdrive the amp achieves.

It's my understanding that Fred designed the amp specifically for the Vintage 30. He compared it to high power celestion blue. Like any amp using a V30, it's got to be cranked up to push the speaker into the sweet spot. I know the V30 gets a bad rap on TGP, but it's a perfect fit for the EDT 13/29, imho... it's sounds phenomenal. The V30 should also help with the lack of mids you're experiencing.

I know some people love the V30.
Thing is it sounds great when pushed.
But I don't open it up all that often.
I would like more chunk and thickness out of it.
I have some new tubes and speakers on the way.
I'll post my findings if anyone is interested.

I would try the blue with a G12H30 that's how Fred's two twelve cabs usually come. I think that that's what most of his amps are voiced for. I know the FTR through that cab is THICK!

These amps are designed to be opened up. If you don't crank it, you need to get an attenuator or sell it. Save your money on speakers and tubes. Get the Aracom.

I've been toying with the G12H30 idea.
Thought I'd try the Cannabis Rex first.
Cheaper!!

But skydog, even when I crank it the thing sounds thin and shrill.
Plugged into my 410 the EDT has thickness. And the bottom isn't so overwhelming.
I just got the new speaker and some tubes to try.
I'll post my findings.

My EDT with just the Vintage 30 was never thin and shrill, I'd check the bias on the tubes...

Ok FWIW.
I did a couple small tweaks to my EDT and thought I would report on the outcome.
I swapped out the vintage 30 for an Eminence Cannabis Rex.
It cut down on the brightness and made the high end a sweeter Fenderier sound. That's a new term BTW: Fenderier.!
I also exchanged the V1 12ax7 for a Jan Phillips 5751.
It also cut down on the gainy high end.
I expect that as the CR speaker breaks in the sound will improve.

As for now I am much happier with the amp

I should restate the "thin and shrill" statement.
It sounds excellent UNTIL I play my 410 60 watt Carr Imperial next to it.
It's only then that I notice the difference in both thickness and clarity.

But that is good advice.
I may have the bias checked. Good point.
Crash, do you remember which brand KT 66 your EDT had?

They were the Chinese ones that Fred uses. I know they are available under a couple of different brands.

I tried the cannabis Rex. It was good. Now I'm on a G12H30.
Like it.
I wish it was a 410. I think that's just my preference.

My favorite speaker for that amp was a ASW KTS60

FWIW, I run a NOS GE 5751 in V2 of my SJT combo (similar architecture to EDT, I believe). I also run my Bass control around 9 or 10 o'clock and my Treble around 10 to 11 o'clock. Volume is usually around 11 o'clock, and that's plenty loud.

I have been through several speakers with my /13 - all are good because the amp is that good, just trying to decide which is the best of the best. Auditioning a KTS70 in it right now, but it may be too much of a good thing on both the bottom and top end. Elegante was awesome. Would like to try a KTS60. May also try a ceramic TT 40/40 (but I hate to take it out of my SFDR where it kills) or a G12-65.

I am bonding with my EDT more.
I sorta expected Tone bliss given the price and reputation.
Maybe there is no such thing as tone bliss.

Has anyone tried bossing hotter or colder than the 32ma?

SkydogFan81

yeah, hotter is better. they are biased a little cold from Fred

That's what I gather from my reading. Some up to 40-50mv with KT66.

Interestingly enough I have my final impression of the EDT. The clean is above average.
The amp sounds great when driven. Especially with klon and analogman KOT on together.

well, I thought I would post the outcome of the EDT. I tried so many things to improve the sound that I wanted out of it. it never really got there for me. so I found a Sampson era SC30 in perfect near new condition. couldnt pass it up. I am GLAD I did. I love this amp. it kills the other one. I didnt think I should have to alter that many things of the EDT to get where I want. I appreciate the guys that loved theirs. I just didnt have that experience.
