If not a Riot, then what?

A mild public protest with no arrests?

A non-violent protest march usually gets it done.

LOL - I bet there will be many more responses like this one.

I meant if not a Suhr Riot, then what?

Tried both, ended up with a wampler plextortion.

Based on YT... Wampler pedals are pretty impressive

Very little to go off of here. Why not the Riot? Then maybe we can help.

Good point. I feel that it is lacking a bit in the low end. There is also a little bit of a buzz in the decay of notes that gives away that it is a pedal.

In the grand scheme of things, I guess I'm being picky and that in a gig situation no one would notice. I'm just curious of any other options.

Hey man, I found the Riot worked best into a clean amp, but it was kind of picky about what amp it went into. I loved the MP Might Red distortion for higher gain stuff. It was more compressed and crunchy than the Riot, not quite as modern sounding and had maybe a touch less gain, but it sounded great in a mix, no matter the setting, and it liked everything I ran it into. Not sure why I gave it up...

The Riot's a great pedal. I have had it twice....Somehow it just didn't give me the overall tones I wanted. The other flavors you might consider is how "brown" do you want to go??? The CMATMods Brownie is great and $50 less new. The Wampler Plextortion is great....so is the Pinnacle (but really EVH sounding). Lots of choices.

You've got to bond with the pedal....it's got to make you sound like you imagined or it just has to go :).

I have found Wampler to be the best of these types of pedals. I used the Pinnacle for a long time and love it. It's much more than just an EVH sound. Only EVH will sound like himself through it, but it has a very good modded Marshall tone that is as close to his tone as youre going to get, but also does a lot more. I recently went back to the Plextortion and sacrificed the little extra gain of the Pinnacle for a feel I started to prefer. Wampler's are one of the very few of those kinds of pedals that aren't one trick pony's.

You're selling the heck out of Wampler... if you don't collect a a paycheck from them, maybe you should! :)

I have to offer another opinion, from someone who can't afford Wampler, I'm really digging the CMATmods Brownie.

Haha I would be okay with that! There are a few brands of pedals that Im very enthusiastic about. This place is all about getting information and advice and I like to give people more than "Wampler is good". If my info helps someone decide to buy a Wampler then I think it's cool that they will probably end up loving it and saving a lot of the money I wasted trying a bunch of the other pedals I tried. Not that it isn't a fun process to try them all.

A big plus about the Wamplers over most other is the EQ (instead of a single tone knob) and they have enough gain available. A lot of those pedals don't have enough or they don't have a tight enough low end to use it.

The Boss HM-2 is actually a really good pedal too, and can be had relatively cheap.

depends on if you want MORE or LESS gain.

i am really liking that Mad Professor Stone Grey, should be out soon :aok

Bjorn doesn't mention many pedals made by other builders, but he did single out the Riot as one of the more interesting pedals he had played lately. it impressed me that he thought highly of it.....i gotta demo one!

I ran my Riot against my Fetto Deluxe and Reeza.
Fetto Deluxe won that battle out. So you might want to check out a Fetto at some point!

This is also very good advice. I don't usually think of my Fetto as something to compare to the Riot, since it's so much more and I use it as an overdrive and lower gain distortion. But it has plenty of gain and can get a Marshall type sound with a much fuller, tighter low end than the Riot. It's the single most versatile and best sounding pedal I've owned. But it's not JUST a high gain Marshall pedal. The Deluxe would be even better for this since it has the boost footswitch.

Thanks guys for your input.

I was looking around for a Superplextortion and realized that it is hard to find. There wasn't any info on it on Wampler's site. Only the regular Plextortion.

Ben C. I'm afraid the Fetto's out of my league due to price.

BobbyD posted in my thread! To answer your question about "MORE" or "LESS" gain. I like the Riot's gain very much. I'm definitely not wishing it had more gain. And I have a bunch of pedals that cover my "less" gain needs. I am definitely excited about the Stone Grey.

I thought about how to best describe what it is the Riot isn't doing for me and here's what it is. I run my amp clean and set it up so that my basic tone is exactly what I want. When I click on the Riot, all of a sudden the bass response that I had previously setup for my clean tone is almost non existent. The tone from the Riot is balanced in the sense that it isn't bumping the mids like a TS type pedal; and, it isn't like it turns my tone into an ice-pick-treble-only booster thing.

Again, I think the Riot is a fantastic sounding pedal for what it does. Chords sound very nice and clear even at high gain settings. It excels at being a "lead tone" pedal. I don't think anyone could ever fault it for being muddy or a terrible pedal. I would certainly gig it. That's not the question. I just want to feel the bass response in it when I click it on just like I would when I would go from clean to dirty with an amp.

And it can get into that high-gain, Riot type thing even better than the Riot if you push it with a gritty booster - like a Timmy, Red Snapper, etc. Makes it tight and gives it that liquidy, saturated sustain.

Just to let you know, the Superplext isn't anything "super" compared to the Plextortion. It doesn't have more gain or anything, but it has a slightly more modern sound. It's discontinued now and it was probably the least popular out the Plextortion and Pinnacle. I was told by a Wampler employee that Brian discontinues things when he has something better in the works. The Pinnacle and Plextortion are long-time staples in the Wampler line.

I wish I knew exactly. He's about to release a really sweet fuzz called the Leviathan and there are supposed to another couple of pedals coming out in a kind of "series" with the Leviathan, but I can't remember if it's all fuzz or distortion too. I think distortion.

The Screwdriver I got off you is most def the best all around OD/Dist pedal I've ever owned. From low gain to hi gain to fuzzed out it does it all. Into a clean amp, into a dirty amp, touch sensitive.....it just cooks.

Thanks again Dragg! :aok

No problem man! The Screw Driver has beaten almost every other OD I've put up against it. I already got another one since selling you my old one.

I also will chime in about the Pinnacle limited, its so much more than a VH pedal.
I use it with the gain around noon or less and it covers tons of bases.
