Born Clarence Leonidas Fender in Fullerton, California. As a boy, Fender became interested in electronics and began dismantling and repairing radios. In 1938, he opened Fender Radio Service in Fullerton. In 1946, he started the Fender Electric Instrument Company. Fender became the first to design and successfully market a solid body electric guitar with his Broadcaster in 1948. His design was renamed the Telecaster in 1950. The following year he introduced his Precision Bass guitar and bass amplifier. Released in 1954, Fender's iconic Stratocaster model has been in continuous production since. In 1965, Fender sold his business to CBS Musical Instruments. In the 1970s, Fender designed guitars, basses, and amplifiers for Music Man. By 1979 he, George Fullerton, and Dale Hyatt started G&L Musical Products with whom he took out new patents on magnetic pickups, vibrato systems, and neck construction among other innovations. He was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and was a 1992 inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He never learned to play the guitar.
Leo Fender received a Technical Grammy Award in February 2009, The award was presented to Fender’s widow, Phyllis Fender, at a special ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009

take all the gear he and his team were responsible in just the period starting at the telecaster and ending with his 1965 blackfaced amps.

teles, strats, p-bass, jazz bass, tweed twins, tweed bassmans, the brown and blonde tolexes, the super reverb, BFDR, etc, etc, etc... its staggering how they helped define the sound of popular music and how fresh they still sound today. an amazing legacy.
