Went and saw Devon Allman last night. He was freaking awesome. Excellent playing, tone, and energy. The band was tight and he even was cool when I chatted with him after the show. Played a Les Paul all night through a fuchs head and cab. The tone was killer. I came away very impressed. I have a few things I noticed though........
1. The first band was a jazz band, they were good but I realized I know nothing about Jazz. The guitar player played a beautiful Les Paul through a blues deluxe. I thought he sounded real good, but then again I know nothing about jazz so maybe not.
2. The Gibson SG with the laminated looking wood( the zoot suit maybe?) is ugly as hell.
3. The guy playing the ugly guitar was playing through a hot rod deluxe. I realized that no matter what anybody says every one I have heard some one play through sounds great. I guess what I am saying is I like hot rod deluxes. They have a bad rap but I am going on record as a fan.
4. Live music kicks ass. Period.

The Hot Rod Deluxe bad rap has a lot to do with reliability.

And the "Drive" channel.
:D
I always like to keep the drive "low" just a bit "hotter" than the clean channel, WAY before distortion, and use my pedals in both channels for some boost... this worked better for me than the drive channel OD'd.

I wrestled with a HRD for 3 years. Occasionally it would sound brilliant, often horrid. Quit during a couple gigs. I finally fixed via ebay and a supersonic.

Is Devon still "Wah Crazy"???
That has honestly kept me away from listening to him. Saw him a few times and that wah was on the entire show. Non stop with it. It was really annoying.

Sounds like a fun night. I'd love to see Devon.
HR's sound great on the clean side with a decent pedal.

He did use the wah a little bit, but not too much. He did sound great though. The Fuchs heads he was using were doing their job for sure.

Saw him last year at a local music festival and he totally kicked butt. There's a certain band that needs his energy . . .

my old band opened for him a year and a piece ago. Yeah he was WAY wah happy. Almost incessant, actually. But the other guitar player had a real Derek Trucks thing going on with the '61 reissue SG and Super Reverb. Phrasing and all. Sounded killer and he was a super nice guy. Complimented us and what not even though he surely didn't have to. Drummer and bass player were money too. And did I mention LOUD. It was a small club here in VB and it was easily the loudest experience of my life, louder than Van Halen in Charlottesville, VA even. The sound dude set it to their specs and of course we couldn't touch em so my amp was on like 0.5 out of 10 haha.

I saw him once with Eric Gales. Not a fan.
Regarding HRD I use the clean channel bright switch in and controls half way a little less on treble. Run SD9 with volume maxed gain at 10 o'clock. Great marshally landau type tone. I stack OD9 into it with volume maxed and gain barely cracked open and it is great for solo and raunchy Marshall rhythm, very Landau Raging Honkies live sound.
