This thread is inspired by that Red Bear rant...I kinda want to see who uses what out there and why. Plus, it's been a slow week for polls, and who doesn't love polls?

Purple Dunlops, please and i'm good.I have always felt more stable with my picking hand on saddles firmly and a thick pick.I can adjust pick attack easily enough and like the stiffness if i want to pick up the pace.

I went through the gamut of picks and have a drawer full that I'll never need. Fenders>Jazz IIIs>V-Picks>Red Bear>and now I'm back to using the Fender celluloid. This will change at any given moment though.

My fave was the black jazz III, then i tried the ultex jazzIII and thought it was ok. A bit lighter, harder and less warm than the black.
I continued to use the black jazzIII, ocassionally using the ultex when i would drop or misplace the black. Then all of a sudden i now really like the ultex jazzIII for the last year now.
First and foremost the ultex jazz III dont have the annoying little lip along the edge of the pick like a black jazz III does. I hate that. Most have it, some dont, but it gets annoying feeling that little lip. I wish they could adress that issue, then maybe i would go back to the black J III.
I do still use the black, but I'll grab for the ultex first.

I used to use whatever I found (like, for free) when I first started playing. Eventually, I got turned on to Pickboy Carbon Nylons (1mm). I used them for both acoustic and electric.

Something... happened... with Pickboy, and those picks became very tough to get a hold of. Which is ok, b/c I ended up preferring the Dunlop Jazz for electric, and then the Dunlop Nylons for acoustic.

However, I did a bit of experimenting with different picks over the last year (mostly in trying to find a pick that would last a bit longer than the Jazz, and felt/sounded better than the Nylons).

Currently, I'm using the V-Pick 'Jazz' replacement for electric, and using Pyramid softs for acoustic. I bring out the V-Pick 'Snake' and 'Diamond' on occasion for acoustic. They make a lot of extra 'noise' that can be nice... But, too big and bulky to use all the time. They're too heavy (weight) to be fast with, and too fat to use on electric. Fun to mess around with, though.

Gotta see how long the V-Pick Jazz will last before I totally ditch the Dunlop Jazz. I usually get maybe four heavy sets in before they are completely rounded off, so the V-Pick is going to have to last... Well, a good long while longer. They are more comfortable, but too expensive to be buying in quantities that I get the Dunlops in.

As for the Pyramid celluloids vs the Dunlop Nylons... They are just nicer. Feel nicer, sound better, have nice, hand-polished edges and are just as durable. I had previously strayed away from celluloids because they always broke on me, so I stuck with Nylons, but I've had some heavy-handed friends TRY to break these... And they don't break. So, win/win. I'm not a sweaty guy, so the pick-dropping thing was never an issue for me, but can't speak for everyone. :P

I voted Dunlop Tortex as the 1mm one is what I use mostly. I sweat a lot when I'm playing live, which made me switch to them. If I'm doing studio work, which is actually most of what I've been doing lately, I use celluloid picks. I just find them a little more articulate.

of course when I can't find that I use either the green tortex jazz picks or the purple ones, I can't seem to track down the blue ones to try them out. I like the DuGain picks (http://www.dugainpicks.com/index.html), especially in Delrin or Acetate.
They're pretty thick with thumb and finger indentations. The with the twisted tip, every note becomes much more accurate and richer in tone. They helped me improve my playing and I have never lost or forgotten one ($15 a piece).

i use V-Pick Diamond Pointed. tried a whole bunch of different V-Picks before settling on this one. it's the best all-rounder i've found. it's 4.1mm thick, but the point has a shallow taper, so it's great for both lead and rhythm, not to mention it sounds great on my acoustic as well.

i just picked up a pack of Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0mm picks, which i'd be happy with if i'd never tried V-Picks. but the Stubbys are a bit too plasticky, and the finger grips (which do feel awesome) are placed too far away from the tip of the pick, so they leave more tip exposed than i llike.

Am I the only one here that uses Hercos? I picked up some Herco Flex 75 picks from a bargain pick jar at a local music shop in search for cheap picks and have been using them ever since. Unfortunately the store went out of business so now I have to pay retail for them :( .
Anyway, they're great! They last forever, a problem I was having with celluloid and other plastic picks, they never slip because of the textured grip, and I can pick as sensitively or as hard as I want. Found out years later that Jimmy Page and Terry Kath also used Hercos, they must have good taste B)

I've been using the Dunlop red Big Stubby in 1mm lately.
I working my way into a smaller pick but the Jazz is too small as of yet.

So I take the Stubby and change the profile a little, making it a little pointier.

My good buddy gave me a RedBear and it is awesome. Steadly growing on me. It was kind of stiff at first but I have adjusted. They are real expensive for picks but I am most likely getting a couple more. I like V picks too, but they did not displace my trusty ole Dunlop Tortex blue. I like a Fender heavy pick, too, but they are slippery and I end up bending or breaking the edges over time. The Dunlops hold up much better for me.

My favorites ever were the pick doodads that came with a bottle of Whiskey River whiskey. Otherwise, thick and with some texture like the George Dennis and various Pikboy/Reefer pix

Thought I'd gone to the jazz pick style for good this time but I went back to my usual....the dunlop 1.5 or 2mm delrins.

Jazz's are too small and too thin. Too far to travel to each string, not enough mass hitting the strings. Tried to like them a number of times. Every time I go to a new pick it'll work fine for a while till my technique backslides with them.

Then I go back to my usual picks and I'm flying with them...and it stays that way

Haha nope...and it worked out well for two reasons, the first being that I swing the other way, and the second being that she became pregnant within the first 3 or 4 months of me knowing her and now has three kids and a crack dealer of a husband. Good times had by all, apparently.

Have been using Pickboy Heavy with the bud leaf on them for a year or two. I was always using really stiff picks (for electric) over the past few years.

On a recent gig, on a whim, I used a Dunlop "the wedge" tortex green. WAY more flexible than I'm used to on electric, but I've always felt that picks with some flex SOUND better (for what I do, which is classic rock leaning toward pop with a Telecaster, I need a little jangle and twang along with being able to play lead lines) BUT when I have to play a tricky part or something arpeggiated etc. I feel like I need the control of a stiff pick.

Anyway, I'd been having some hand issues and felt like a little "shock absorption" on the right hand might be helpful. I just told myself I'd GO WITH IT and adjust. I definitely missed some notes due to the flex of the pick (yeah, right...my lame guitar playing had NOTHING to do with it...), but the sound is much better, and I've since gone over to it completely.

For the moment I'm digging the more flexible pick, even for fast picking. That's a big surprise to me.

Tried the Dunlop Tortex after being a devout Fender Celluloid user... no going back. I feel I now have more control with the Tortex.

Also, I then jumped up to the Tortex 1.14 heavy and found it easier for me to achieve the tones I want. I actually used to break strings more often using Fender medium picks... overcompensating, I guess.

For mandolin, Wegen.

For guitar, D'Andrea pro plec. Amazing clarity, and a wonderful thickness / hardness ratio.

+1 on the pro plecs , they are fantastic , i use for everything , occasionally will use a dunlop jazztone , they are amazing as well but a little darker tone.................

I went into a pick identity crisis, tried other thicknesses and brands, long story short... Pro plecs just feel so much better than 90% of anything else I used.

Occasionally i have been using the freebees from juststrings.com and dunlop Ultex.

Dunlop 207 (largish, black carbonate, rounded tip). Best balance of thickness (the thicker the better to my fingers), tonal sweetness, and grip that I've found. V-Picks can feel better, but don't sound as good.

For playability only, I love the V-Pick Diamond. But that thick acrylic edge makes a "plink" I can't quite abide. And plain Fender mediums sound fantastic, but I can't keep them in my hands due to the flex and thinness.

So it's all about balancing what makes the string sound best with what relaxes my grip the most. Dunlop 207 is the current best I've found.

Green Dunlop Tortex or Ultex

Main reason is that I can get the Green Tortex practically anywhere. I'l play half a set to a set with one and chuck it and grab another... no specialty picks for this guy. I like the hard attack the Ultex but have a harder time finding them. I usually stop by the dryer in the laundry room on the way out the door and grab a handful off of them for a show. Seems like that's the most reliable place to find picks in my house.

Years ago you could get Kay guitar picks, they were red or black, and had the "K" imprinted on the center. I still have 1, they quit making them in the early 80s. Those were my favorite picks.

The closest thing to them I have found is the Delrin .071, I buy them in bullk
I am thinking of changing, because although I like them, they wear down quite quickly.
I am not extremely choosy about picks other than that they be somewhat thick, but I do have preferences.

http://elderly.com/images/accessories/PK/EMSP-73_sm_.jpg Can't believe no one has mentioned Star Picks. They Rock! They were originally called Everly picks - one of the Everly brothers used to cut the holes in his picks and it just turned into a side business, I guess.

Anyway, they're sweet because they don't slide or turn in your hand and you can have a real loose grip without worrying about dropping it. I like the yellow ones (pretty heavy).

Recently got turned on to Herco. I've been enjoying the gold ones lately (.50mm, maybe?) but the silver ones are great, too (.75mm?). I just found out Keith Urban uses the silver.

For years, I used the yellow Dunlop Tortex, then I used Dunlop Hotlix copper picks, then back to the yellow Tortex, then I dug out some Dunlop nylon jobs I had laying around and gave them a try and liked them. Shortly after, my friend gave me a Herco and I was hooked.

My V Pick large rounded, when I can find it, which right now I can't.

It's funny 'cause it's true. :)

I was really enjoying a red bear medium(?) until I lost it... and it's not even clear!

Note: For what it's worth, the texture changed a little after a trip through the laundry, but the pick wasn't destroyed and the universe didn't end or anything.

Lately I've been enjoying the v-pick tradition. The rounder ones sound all scrape-y when I play them using my normal pick attack, but this one works well for me and feels great.

I also like the surfpicks and played stubby's and tortex (green, yellow, and orange) for years and years before I read an interview with Vernon Reid where he talked about a bunch of picks. I decided to shop around and was shocked at the diversity. :)

Good times!

I've recently been trying out a sample pick from Chris at Gravity Picks. It's a light, comfy pick that doesn't have quite as much of the "chirp" that I've noticed with V-picks but still sticks to your fingers a bit. The one that I got is maybe a 1.5mm or so. It's comically thin compared to the V-pick "tradition" I've been using lately, but I was raised on thinner picks (green and yellow tortex mostly), so it's an easy back-transition.

So far I'm really pleased with it and will keep using it and stop the pick-hunt for a while.
