View Full Version : Best DI box to run on a pedalboard?

Currently tend to use a ParaDriver as a DI when I need to, but I'm finding that in some setups I need another DI to go after delay/reverb effects.
I can always get another paradriver or Bass Driver I guess, but what else is there in terms of DI's that can run off a pedalboard power supply as well as phantom power (which I find isn't always available?)
So far I got the BBE DI-1000 - anything else?

I use a Radial Jdv and love it.

I use a Radial Jdv and love it.
In terms of features it looks awesome... 30V internal headroom...
Only thing that would put me off is - I believe the PSU isn't international..?
How much do you reckon it weighs?

why active ?
Just so it would act as a preamp as well... (It would be for going straight to PA)

If you're talking a plain DI with not much features, I've loved the Countryman DI. Very clean signal, maintains good signal integrity. Phantom too.. built like a tank. really hardcore.

Does the country man allow you to connect to the amp and PA at the same time?
Is the country man input just line level or can you attach it to the amps speaker also?

Heard good things about those too, don't think they have a PSU input though? I guess I could always mod one with a clip onto the battery terminals...

By the way, I read in another thread that you had the ParaDriver DI too at one point... In practice, what do you think the JDV offers over and above the paradriver DI?
The Para does tick a couple of boxes even just as a basic DI - 3 outs (XLR out, switchable line / instrument level 6.3" out, Parallel 6.3"out) and runs off Phantom, 9v DC or battery power...
So far everything apart from the JDV seems a downgrade, feature-wise...

The Lehle Sunday Driver XLR is another option: it has an excellent preamp, and works with any 9-18V power supply.

Why active? With the Radial JDI (http://www.radialeng.com/re-jdi.htm) you do not have to worry about power. I use these DI's for both live and studio work constantly. An inexpensive passive design (with cheap transformers and signal loading) can be a problem, but the JDI uses a proven design with a Jensen transformer. Not affiliated, just a fan. Great sounding unit.

Given I have a JDV which was leagues better as a Di... (has to be heard to believed) My sound engineer talked me into getting one. It was like taking a blanket off my sound. I was like really?!? Impressed. :) In your case I'd reccomend the non-active JDI. If you don't know why you need a JDV, then the JDI would be perfect. I want to get a JDI for my smaller board too. I'd def reccomend the JDI over the Pro Di. JDI has Jensen...

I guess I was thinking active DI just as something that would be a bit more flexible rather than being a one-trick pony... I find a combined preamp / DI is such a handy thing... but you're right, for the purpose I described a passive would work too.
I guess I will consider getting hold of a JDV (maybe next time I'm in the States!) and look out for a JDI turning up S/H.
Sunday driver looks like a nifty thing too... would be interesting to compare to the Para Driver.
Thanks for the ideas!
