View Full Version : DiMarzio EJ Custom Pickups
hi guys,
did any of you guys try the dimarzio ej custom Humbucker in a strat?
I'm looking for a low output humbucker that gives you just a little more gain than the single coils.

Those EJ Customs are VERY trebly. They were designed for Eric Johnson's Les Paul. Personally, I'd look at some stacked humbuckers before going there, but the cool thing about DiMarzios is discovering unique tones by using unintended combos, so you never know!

I have one in the neck of my Tyler. Great pickup, but not exactly single coil sounding, definitely more output than a single. I like it how it sounds, quite balanced.
If you're looking for full on single coil sound, the humbucker from hell is closer
I love that pickup, at least for the neck, haven't tried one in the bridge, but it is my current favorite clear and clean neck HB.

This pickup is great in the neck position, but even in the bridge position it has its place. If you are constanly changing between a strat or tele and a Les Paul style guitar, they might be the ticket to go. You would not have to adjust your amp setting all the time.

Mate: gain depends on your amp! ;)
I would consider these as single coils in a HB package, really. If your guitar is bright for starters than these won't exacly help in that department. I'd go with the Air Classic for shredding or the PAF 36th for more blues/ classic rock. Should I want something brighter than either I'd go with the Bluesbucker.

Great for Fender guys who need humbuckers in their arsenal!
Bright but full sounding.

I had a set of SD Firebird Vintage mini-hb's in a Yamaha Pacifica that where low-output. As low-output as HB's go me thinks. These use mag in coil, so you get big Fender-ish tones. I'd say, try SD Antiquity maybe.

The EJs are very balanced and very clean and open. Great LP neck PU!

You know what kind of Dimarzio that was? The PAF 36th Anni and the Air Classic would have more of that low output HB sound we'd expect from this type of pickups. Then there's the Bluesbucker, which is something of a P90 in HB format, and the HB From Hell, which like the EJ also is pretty bright and edgy for a PAF style.
