Not a metal guy by any stretch as I rarely max out the gain on my OD pedals but I have a few tracks to record that require a Vai/Petrucci tight, higher gain type of sound. I am not going to throw mad dollars at an amp but I might consider a few bucks for a pedal that can get me in the neighborhood. Suggestions?

MI Audio Tube Zone and Suhr Riot are both good options. I love my Riot!

TZ is good suggestion. It's great, versatile pedal, but it can be had quite cheap used.

Mad professor mighty red distortion. High gain, somewhat scooped mids, tight high gain, and is in the Marshall amp vein.
The Tube Zone or better yet the Openhaus ( both i didnt care for ) may be a better fit if you want the mesa amp sound.

+1 on the Riot.
Killer distortion.

I appreciate the advice. I don't doubt they are quality pedals but I am not sure I am ready to shell our 2 bills for a pedal that does a sound I usually don't use or need just for a 1 off session. I think I will need to work some more with what I have and see what I come up with.

how much do you want to spend??
I have a hardwire metal distortion that is very versatile, great range of gain, has mids control...a toggle switch that gets you 2 distinctive tones...and its only $100...find it used probably for 1/2 of that...really A GREAT PEDAL
