If you play the heavy stuff, a 5150 combo is good (but heavy litterally)

The funny thing is they had their channels mixed up. I got better cleans from the lead channel and better lead tone from the ryth channel (crunch button on).

What do you need out of it? If you need something clean I'd look at the Fender Hot Rod Series. If you need dirt I'd scope out the new Vox Ac-15s.

Of course, I'd probably check Craigslist long before I'd go into any shops. YMMV

Just good cleans. I plan on doing everything else with pedals.

Carvin Nomad/Bel Air. ;) At a bit more than that, the Rivera 100-12 Duo is ridiculous. No one seems to talk about them much, but Vince Gill used them, and IIRC so did Will Ray. Great clean channel, with a fairly low gain Marshally lead channel. Takes pedals like a champ.

I'd prefer trying before buying.

Try a Peavey Classic 50 212 or 410, plenty of headroom and you should be able to find a new one for about that I would think. 5 year warranty=Good.

+1. Good options here. The Fender Hot Rod series are pretty good amps for the money. The DeVille will give you all the clean headroom you need.

Except one is $850 and the other is $999.

New or used? $600 is a ton of money for a used amp. You should be able to find a Classic 30 almost brand new for $350 ish on CL.

Anything I can find in a shop. I don't necessarily have to buy from a shop, but my dad would prefer it. It's a graduation gift and he has credit accounts with musiciansfriend and a local guitar store.

I've had the Carvin Bel Air and it was great but loud for the house

I've had a Fender Super Champ XD and it is equally at home "at home" or at your local jam session. It doesn't have the tonal complexity of some higher end amps, but can pull off a pretty convincing argument if you aren't A/Bing it next to one of those.

I've heard the Reason Bambino is a killer amp and it has a very low starting price point.

For a GC purchase, you might end up enjoying an Egnater (Rebel or Tweaker), or the Vox Night Train. I've heard alot of good things about Egnater's bang for the buck here on TGP.

Congrats!

an AC15C1. the normal channel eats pedals up and Top Boost channel is magnificent on its own. really sings when its cranked.

I'm definitely considering the AC15. My brother has a tweaker so even if they dont have one of those in stock, I can compare.

As a clean platform for pedals the Fender Prosonic Combo is hard to beat.

Used around $650. Last two went on eBay for $455 (a steal) and $700 for a super clean one.

I actually thought the Reverend Hellhound was a good sounding amp. Lightweight and a great volume range. More natural sounding than the classic 30 which is also pretty decent, and easy to move. If you need something easily bought in a store probably the tweaker series. Almost anything will sound better when you put some good old production 12AX7s in.

You can pick up a used Fender DRRI for around $600.

Classic, clean, portable.

Bugera V22 and Blackstar 20 watt or 40 watt.

The 40 watt is $699.

I don't see that a non-metal player needs a better sound than is provided by either one of these amps. (I'm assuming the 20 watt BS sounds just like the 40 watt, and I'm confident it does)
