Oh Danelectro, maker of really-light-funky-guitars-with-lipstick-pick-ups-wired-in-series.
You've made perhaps the most underrated pedal ever that can be used in for so many purposes...if only it wasn't housed in such a crappy plastic box...

Any of the DOD pedals that worked well
The 201 phaser and FX65 chorus are damned fine pedals but branded with the curse of the name DOD.
The bad monkey is known to be a good booster for an overdriven amp but nobody will use them as they dont want anything with DOD on thier board

Mxr doubleshot
The thing with this pedal is that it needs loads Of headroom but it's a monster sounding distortion with up to four different tones
From a light overdriven sound to full on metal
Sounds awesome through solid state amps
18 volts and very silent

I'd tell you, but as soon as I spoke its name it would be implicitly up-rated, and I want it to remain the "Most Underrated" for some time to come.

Maxon OD820 hands down.
Best TS type pedal ever made, including all the aftermarket/boutique blah blah, but 99% of guitar players dont know wtf it is. Clarity, amp-like, tone, and the icing on the cake: Feel that is to other pedals what the feel of a Dumble is to other tube amps. I've played a whole lotta pedals, I have never felt anything that had the kind of silky, "here let me help you play that" quality that the 820 has, even at low gain levels.

Fish N Chips is a solid pedal. I've had one laying around for years. It makes its way on and off the board as needed. It's so cheap that it's not worth selling, which in a way, makes it valuable :)

Perhaps Durham SexDrive? I'm surprised more folks don't have it on their pedal board. Mine's very early in the chain (wah is first) and is always on, gain at 10:30, output on 1:30, compression off. Makes everything else (including drive pedals downstream) sound better.

Behringer TOD-100 'Tube Overdrive'. Stupidly cheap but it produces a creamy overdrive that puts many much more expensive pedals to shame. I take it to every gig and session I go to just in case any of my regular pedals break down or someone elses gear goes wrong.

I'll play along; Going with the OP, my pick's another Dano, again from the same mini *food* series: the Chicken Salad!
Perhaps not underrated, certainly UNDERPRICED! At $39, it's just a fraction of the cost of the cheapest univibe clones available
Sure, it's got a flimsy plastic enclosure, coupled with possibly the worst bypass buffering I've heard, BUT, it's a real 'vibe circuit, seed-bulb, photocells & all
I'm a bit of a vibe nut. The only *swirly* I own, out of about 50 odd pedals, and the lowly CS holds it own with some of my faves (Sweetsound Ultravibe, FoxRox Aquavibe), actually sounding BETTER than some (Dunlop) for those on a budget OR NOT, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this pedal

I will add +1 on the Fish & Chips. Have had mine for a few years. This past weekend I did break the plastic screw that holds the battery compartment on though. Replaced it with a metal one from my basement and seems to stay on fine.

This is consistent with a Behringer dirt pedal I heard someone playing live
about two years ago. I am not sure which Behringer it was , but the tone was an excellent bluesy light to medium overdrive. Meeting him after the gig he told me he had recently paid only about 25 dollars brand new in a store. Sounding as good as the 200 dollar pedals he demo'd , he bought the Behringer .

I was talking to this guy who's the owner of the rehearsal place we rent. He's a gear nut, and he showed me a three knobs aluminium box. This, he said, is a perfect replica of a vintage TS9. So we A/Bd his custom made TS9 with my stock 2002 TS9. They sounded the same. I was puzzled: why pay twice to get a clone? Him? He was pretty happy, because that was the proof that his TS9 actually sounded like one :jo
Anyway, TS9 for me too.

That sounds like the TOD-100. It received a very favourable review when one of the UK guitar magazines looked at a batch of Behringer overdrive or distortion pedals. To my ears the overdrive sound it produces is as smooth as my Fulltone Fulldrive II and the only thing that keeps the Fulldrive on my pedalboard is its 'Boost' function.

I know its (for me) the most usefull controll I.ve got.
Ice pick removal... distortion smoother... Wah pedal... all just one flick of a pinkey away... and nobody (apart from you and me) ever uses it...
Most people just leave it on 10 and look on in awe at my bright but rounded distortion tone from the bridge pickup...
Its got to be the winner of this... although its not a pedal

wizard333
05-21-2011, 06:26 PM
Barber stuff is relatively cheap because Dave believes in charging a price working musicians can afford. IT has nothing to do with quality of build - his builds are the the best quality out there, a few others match it, but most pedals costing double and more cant even come close. And they sure arent cheap due to the sound, which is easily the best for what they do.

Don't get me wrong, I did have a couple Timmy's and a Tim over the years - I just prefer the teeny tiny bit of compression the LTD SR has. There's no OD pedal that stacks better than a Timmy.
I just meant Barber has never been flavor of the month, anywhere for any pedal. He's the Rodney Dangerfield of pedal makers.
The Dirty Bomb easily beats the Riot when most people give it a shot - but that's not a lot of people.

Indeed. I've tried to add some fuel to that fire, I've posted in a few of those recent threads.
I own Half-Gainer, Dual Unlimited, Burn Unit EQ, and Small Fry. He certainly deserves recognition for his amazing line up.
I think he gets respect by those who have tried them. But given what he charges for the quality, I am surprised he doesn't get talked up here more often.
The Timmy rightfully deserves much recognition too, but since Barber prices competitively also, it is a bit surprising he doesn't get as much "face" time.

Disagree - had a Dirty Bomb. Nice pedal but nowhere as gainy and dimensional as the Riot
Funny, I have the gain on mine set at 9'oclock, and it's pretty darned high gain. I had a Dirty Bomb when they first came out and sold it within a few weeks. I had no idea how to set the knobs.
When I gave it another shot I A/B'ed it with a Riot and I could get it to sound EXACTLY like the Riot, but was able to dial in more low end to sound better with my amp.
It's just one of those pedals that takes time to "get".
Mind you I'm using an AC30, they are really finicky with high gain. Most of the guitarists that I like that use them don't even bother, they have another amp for high gain stuff.
+1 on LPB-1. Muff Fuzz (overdrive) is great too, cleans up with volume knob very nicely. Stack these together and it sounds like your amp is exploding.

The Marshall Bluesbreaker has never gotten the recognition it deserves in any form. The great oddity of this is that, as far as OD's go, it makes more sense as a "standard" than the TS circuit does, since the BB circuit is fully musical with a broad tonal representation.
For a newer pedal that is the most underrated... The Visual Sound Open Road.
For a newer builder who's generally overlooked... Probably Barber, however, some visual overhaul of his line would work wonders.

I couldn't agree with you more, the original BB's have been my overdrive of choice for many years now. I have 5 of them and still counting. I recently bought from the TGP emporium a set of all the old marshall dirt pedals; Govnor, shred master, drive master & blues Breaker. They are really good pedals and hold up with any other vintage icon's. I think the Marshall pedals are iconic as well.
I also agree with Barber pedals, amazing. I especially like the original Burn Units; best dumble in a box pedal out there and I have many. Great smooth leads and can do allot more.
