Their bringing it back. I've always been interested in them. Too bad they didn't bring back the Moog electronics in it.

reissuing the RD?

Seriously?

As awful as the Firebird X is, at least it's Gibson's attempt at something "new".

But reissue the RD?

This is a joke.....right?

there's another joke listed on the Gibson site: the price.

Musicians Friend has been selling an RD Standard for months now. Don't know why a press release is just now being sent out (unless it's been an MF exclusive until this point, and will be wide release in the future).

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-RD-Standard-Electric-Guitar?sku=430810

Currently on sale for $1299.

It was ugly back then...hasn't gotten any more attractive over the years.
The model in Burst with blocks/gold/headstock inlay parts was very nice.

Yanno what? There are enough Zeppelin trubute bands to sell them too for their "1979 reunion" set.

They came out as a GOTW (Guitar of the week) a couple of years ago and have been available ever since.

I still have my original 70s RD ... finally people are paying good money for the old ones.

People thought the first round of Vs and Explorers were goofy, too.

:D

I like it, an un-spiky Explorer. Weren't the originals maple body and neck?

I like it.

Its ok.... but what.. did they find a stash of bodies hidden somewhere after flood clean-up?

If it was made out of korina and had an ebony fretboard it would be really nice.

RDs are cool. I may get an ebony if I can locate the $$.

I owned one for a long time and beat the hell out of it. I still regret selling that guitar.

I like the body shape but I'd like to see it with an Explorer or non-reverse Firebird headstock. I just think the shape would fit better with the way the body sort of slants at an angle.

I dig 'em --the Artist ones are cool too

to be honest, I really like the rd's. But re-issuing it with the wrong scale length reeks of fail.

These were originally exclusive to the Japan market. Maybe Musician's Friend bought up the remaining stock that didn't sell? I love the RD design, and would love one of the Artist CMT models with the binding!!

I love my GOTW RD. Like a Les Paul crossed with an Explorer - what's not to like?

It also has an ebony board and is 24 3/4" scale, which I prefer to the longer scale models.

The originals from the '70s have a 25 1/2" Fender scale. The new ones are the standard Gibson 24 3/4"

I had one years ago. It had a nice ebony board and it was a well balanced guitar, fun to play. Unfortunately the original electronics were swapped out ~

I like it. I imagine I'll be purchasing one if the quality doesn't suck.

^ that sucks -- I saw they did that to the Nighthawk too.

If it had the correct scale lenght I'd buy one.

I like it. It reminds me of an explorer with a more manageable size and shape. I wasn't around for the originals, so the period-incorrect scale wouldn't bother me.

On a side note, the price of the RD is telling. Apparently, if you take away the plastic binding and/or the entire Les Paul model, Gibson USA is an affordable guitar brand. :bonk

I like it. Fun to look at.

Personally I like the body shape more then a Firebird though the Firebird headstock for the win. Still like the rest of the Gibson line I wouldn't buy it.

Had a custom back in the late 70's through the 80's. It was fun but eventually had to go in favor of something better looking. It was pretty advanced with it's 9V battery and boost switch or whatever they called it. I thought it just made the tone off the charts trebly. Here's my old setup. Note the period correct wood paneling:

I still have this relic too. (If anyone is dying for it PM me and we can talk.) I think I mail ordered it out some catalog, around 1979.
