My friend has a 90's Marshall 1987X Reissue Head that is louder than all hell and we need an attenuator to tame it down so we can practice at considerable bedroom levels without getting our faces melted.

Is there really such a thing as the "best" Attenuator, or are they all generally the same? We are also concerned it if will hurt the head or cause premature tube failure down the road.

Any help will be most appreciated!

There are big differences in attenuators - I don't use one, but I have researched them as I wanted to buy one for a long time. There are huge price differences and my understanding is the prices really do match the quality. The point is the get a pretty low volume with all the tone and the cheaper ones can only cut off a few dbs before losing tone. They also shorted power tube life. I think a better option is checking out Hall Amplifier's VVR or London Power's Power Scaling.

I came across the 'Ultimate Attenuator'. Any opinions on this?

If you wanna spend that much, you probably won't find a better one.

The "three" that get talked and debated about the most here are:

1) Phantom
2) Aracom
3) Alex
