We (as a community) are so freaking spoiled it blows my mind sometimes. I see comments time and time again about the quality of YouTube demo's, soundclick stuff, etc... "ruining GAS" for a particular piece of gear, or "proving that gear is not worth the hype", etc... Or worse, complaining about the people actually making the demo's (either their talent level, what they decide to play, what clothes they wear, their level of "soul"???).
WTF is the matter with people (more specifically, guitarists... more specifically, ones who hang on TGP?).
Look, I know there is a lot of crap that you have to wade through on YouTube and the like to find gems that showcase gear the way YOU want to hear it. Hell, even some of my ill-fated attempts at video / audio of demo's probably suck to a lot of people. But I'll tell you what -- I don't even have a Guitar Center within 50+ miles of me to demo gear. My local stores (outside of a nice Mom and Pop shop that does carry Korean made Reverends which I dig) blow chunks. I think you would be hard pressed to find store(s) in my vicinity that carry:
Suhr, Carroll Ann, Dr. Z, and the gazillions of other booteek manufacturers that are making amazing stuff that TGP'ers are interested in so the argument "try before you buy" and "don't base opinions on clips" is moot (and bullshit) for MANY of us who don't live in LA, next to Dave's or Willcutt Guitars, etc... OR who don't have the free time to take road trips just to try out new toys.
There is also a lot of gear that you CAN'T demo (Fractal Audio) and you MUST base decisions on clips. And still, people complain. People can't use their ears and minds to be able to make a decent level judgement call about "room dynamics", amound of YouTube compression, mic placement, etc... just laughable imho.
I would say less than 2-3 years ago YouTube, soundclick, soundcloud didnt' really "exist" as a place to search for information on gear. And in an incredibly short time ANYONE can simply and efficiently record, upload and present demo's to the masses. And yes, it's a double edged sword -- this allows the collective us to get a peek at gear we might never be able to hear without buying first which is awesome, but at the same time every demo of said gear might be played by some hack (like me) and the demo might not be what some of us want to hear.
But to complain about clippage in general is lame and obnoxious imho. The modern guitarist has so much at his or her fingertips and yet still has so much to complain about. Actually, because of the internet it's easier to complain than ever before lol!
Ah technology!
Ok, that is all... guess I need more coffee.

Oh, I also personally like well placed emoticons :)
