First I want to mention that I don't follow the NBA on a regular basis so I'm not real versed in the pro game. I have been watching the finals this year and I have a question about fouls.
It appears to me that when shooting outside of say 10-12 feet, even the suggestion of contact draws a whistle for a foul. Contesting a shot puts the shooter on the line.
In the lane, it looks like there is heavy contact on most shots and that isn't a foul. Granted a lot of that contact is on the body, but still. Is this just the refs letting them play in the finals or is this normal?
I guess I never realized just how much these guys beat on each other. Not a complaint, just an observation.
If anyone could explain what the restricted semi-circle line by the basket means as far as taking a charge, I'd love to hear about it.

just don't even think about breathing on Dirk and you'll be OK.

LeBron has about 3 free throws in this series.

Because he has chosen to play a perimeter game and be content tossing assists. Anything close to the hoop has been wide open transition dunks and the like.

The refs have been extremely inconsistent for several years. That's the real issue. On back to back plays there can be a no call when there's been heavy contact. The next they'll call something questionable when it doesn't benefit the team being fouled. For example calling some ticky-tack foul on a fast break when stopping play negates what could be a momentum changing dunk that gets the home crowd back into the game.

the semi circle is a guideline for taking a charge....in the paint you have to be ready to take the charge outside the semi circle or it is not considered a charge but blocking instead

There are no rules in the NBA regarding fouls or traveling. It's all just whatever...

Unfortunately, this is probably closer to the truth and reality than anything.
And the whole "continuation" thing, as well as getting four steps before traveling is called.......are KILLING the damn game. Add to that the "and one" bullshit - which is more marketing hype than anything else (that has now turned into a certifiable part of the game)......and you have a game that has turned into a three-ring circus at times.
Just my opinion, of course.

Correct, only time this doesnt apply is when the offensive player is already in the paint. The late offensive foul called on LBJ last game is an example of that exception. Tyson Chandler is allowed to be inside the restricted area because LBJ was in the paint already.
