I took my kids, and a few of their friends to see Super 8 over the weekend. It was a really good movie, kinda combined E.T./Close Enounters with a ton of adventure.

If you're looking for something to do with the family, go check it out!

I think the comparison (at least Ebert made) that can be made is "The Goonies" but updated. Definitely a fun ride.

Yep, great fun. It's definitely a throwback to those teen adventure movies of the 80's.

Being a kid raised on Spielberg movies I was so excited for this one. In the end though I left somewhat disappointed. I thought Abrams did a good job capturing the heart but not the awe of those films from my youth. It's a fun movie, not bad, I just expected more. Without getting into spoilers I just felt the sci-fi element to the story felt underdeveloped and tacked on.

I really liked it. Being that age kid in the 70's, it really had an authentic feel. From the sets, to the clothes. And, it truly is a throwback 80's adventure movie, with a lot of heart. It isn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it does what it intended to do very well. It's very good.

Yeah - we liked it, though it received 4 of 5 stars in the local paper which I consider a mite generous.
It was a bit much my 7-year old, who cried at the end necklace scene. I think my 10 year old found it a bit tough to follow, but hung in there...

The movie is definitely more about the relationships than the sci-fi. Just like Stand By Me wasn't about a dead body. It's the opposite of transformers where the humans are the throwaway part.

nothing can touch Skyline....that movie will be infamous for that ending.... future generations will be talking about it.

I loved this movie. The setting was '79, but it was close enough to the mid-80s when I grew up just like these guys.

Summer vacation meant riding my bike everywhere till the sun went down (and then some) looking for adventure.

This movie made me nostalgic for those simpler times...before blackberries, iphones, laptops, gps...just me, my friends, and my bike...looking for crashed alien spaceships and military coverups...

It really did do a great job of taking me back... I loved the scene where he's talking about all the different shades of gray for model paint.

Yup. They should have developed the Alien character a little more, not the same level of empathy and connection as you had with ET.

It touched on many similarities of Goonies, ET, Close Encounters, but didnt flush any of them out fully. I'd give it a B-

Sounds like a fair grade to me.

Absolutely agree. Everything about the people, the way they acted and talked, to their looks reminded me of the 70's. I could relate. Seeing the Pacer getting crushed was so funny. That was an appropriate death to such an ugly car.

There were some great one liners. Nothing in your face but funny. There were subtle things that made the movie better, like the kid on the phone at the train station.

It wasn't a movie that would change your life but it's a movie to go see and have fun.

Definitely a tribute to earlier Spielberg - it was a fun ride and very nostalgic (which it was supposed to be I think) for those of us that may have grown up on these movies.

I caught hints of Jaws, Close Encounters, ET, Goonies and The Explorers in this bad boy. A fun, fun moive. Can't wait for Cowboys and Aliens. :)

saw it this weekend. Both my wife and I really liked it...in fact she said it's the best movie she's seen in a theatre in a long time.
I thought it was very good too. Considering the dismal offerings at the movieplex this summer, I highly recommend it!

Yeah, it did, didn't it? ... and not a comic book hero in sight... imagine that!

I was waiting for the tank to roll over that POS red Pinto in the town invasion scene. They cut away before it did. Damn!

Otherwise, a very fun and entertaining movie!

Great movie. ET/Goonies for adults. Wonderful performances from the kids.

The wife and I saw it last night and both enjoyed it. Definitely got the feel of time frame. The ending was a little contrived and hokey but all in all it was a fine movie. Loved the performances from the kid actors.

Great propaganda with the modern day fema camp portrayed as 1.) acceptable and 2.) period correct. That wouldn't have flown in the 70s on either point. Fail.

Otherwise, neat movie but flies pretty close to the "giants" theory that resurfaces regularly and recently in ufologist circles.

Standby Me meets Alien

I think we're entering the era of Hollywood genre hybridization.

I left that film with a big smile on my face. It reminded me of Goonies with some ET mixed in.

FWIW, my 13 year old thought it was the best movie he's seen all year.

Agreed... Super 8 was a good movie. It reminded me of what movies were when I was kid.

I liked it. I thought the performance they got out of the kids was really great; especially out of the chubby kid director (he totally stole the show). Elle Fanning is every bit the young powerhouse as her sister! Crazy good actors, those girls.

In regards to the "sci fi" bit being "tacked on" - I think that's not entirely fair as the general POV the entire time was from the kid's eyes. You were trying to figure out "what the heck it was" the entire time (just like they were) and not until the bus scene did you finally confirm "alien". Me personally, I found the way he teased it excruciatingly well played...

not even close to 80's era movies..

Too little dialogue and too much reliance on explosions and CG....

That was what made The Goonies etc... great.. the dialogue.... this did NOT have it.

I was let down.

I felt the same way the first time I watched it. But, then I realized that I don't watch these movies for the first time the say that I did as a kid. Watching it through the eyes and mind of an adult takes away from the awe that we felt when watching Stand By Me, ET, The Goonies, etc. The second time, I tuned as much of that out as possible and it changed my experience of the movie quite a bit. I love it and it will be a first day purchase when it's out on Blu-Ray.

It was good for kids. I thought it was dreadfully cheesy. I never liked the movies it's emulating either, though, not even when I was a kid. I guess I'm a cynical bastard.

Yep. It was a fine movie but no one will remember this movie in a year.

Just saw this movie last night.....loved it (mostly).

One little nitpick caught my attention:

The boy mention the little cubes looking like Rubik's Cubes. The movie took place in '79...Rubilks cube was not commercially released until something like 1982.
