View Full Version : 'Glassy' ODs (EDIT: Found!)

Anyone knows any pedals that make your tone more 'glassy'? Something with that high end chime and shimmer in the top end, a certain complexity in the treble region.

All I can think of is:
Catalinbread Silver Kiss
Lovepedal Kalamazoo
Psionic Audio Telos
DTS SDD-3KP

Any others?

EDIT: Bought my glassy pedal already!

Morning Glory?

Isn't that a clone of the original Bluesbreaker? Not much of a fan of that circuit.

Yea kinda, it is adjusted a bit... I am considering buying one, but I am not all that familiar with BB's to say how similar it is. What amp are you using? It sounds like you want a Fender-esc Twin tone?

Actually more of a Vox tone to it to get that 'glassiness'.

I use a Vox at home but I want that harmonic top end complexity replicated in a pedal when I gig/practice with the band.

oh yea... I have always been a Fender guy, but is Vox known for their presence (high midrange)? That might help to hone in on the pedal you want... what amp are you playing into for practice/gigs - does it change?

The Silver Kiss I had was brilliant for that. If you're chucking money around, the BJFE Emerald Green Distortion Machine is supposed to be good for that Voxy top end...

Menatone Top Boost In A Can ?

That made me think... Voxes are not necessarily "glassy." Kind of dark, really.

The TB channel on Vox amps is not so glassy as it is treble-y.

Glassy to me is like Blackface/silverface Twin or Dual Showman, etc.

Off-topic... sorry.

My pedal suggestion? A Tim/Timmy.

It SOUNDS like my AC30 cranked. Pretty cool.

+1, although I found it shrill. My love Super Drive Nitro in Clean/Bright mode adds an awesome glassy sheen. Blackout Effectors Mantra with low-gain mod gets a little glassy (again, really nice) when the treble is cranked, but the effect is pretty suble. Screwdriver does kinda if you set it right, but I think it's a little on the dark side. -E

Screwdriver never had any glassiness to it.

And I doubt the Eternity fits the description as well?

Not interested in the Top Boost sound. I'd love something at rather MINIMAL drive, so more of an always on kinda thing. And Tim/Timmy is basically a 'more' pedal. Not glassy to me, but an excellent pedal nonetheless.

The ZVEX Super Hard On (SHO) seems to add a little sparkle to the high end. Technically, it's a clean boost I guess. It's counterpart: the Super Duper 2-in-1 functions both as a clean boost and an OD.

For me it's a rolled back fuzz face. Plenty of glass.

Eternity?? Really?? Not a pedal I would think of as "glassy". But then I don't hear a Vox as glassy either. A Matchless, sure. Believe it or not, I suspect that an Xotic BB might get you there if you keep gain at around 9.00 or less. It really is very good at the low gain stuff and can be quite clear and dare I say "glassy". I suppose the AC booster may be worth a try too.

Yeah that works well with single coils. But I no longer use a Fuzz Face in my chain!

Screwdriver never had any glassiness to it.

That's so weird because ... it did. Did you crank the Brilliance on the Screwdriver? Play with the Pre-gain and Tone? It's in there, but it's the least "glassy" of the pedals I mentioned.

And I doubt the Eternity fits the description as well?

Huh. You doubt this because ... ? You know, it actually has a knob labelled "GLASS." I don't like the pedal, but there you go.

Or maybe I have no idea what you think "glassy" actually sounds like. -E

Barber LTD SR...

gotta be the Special Recipe, though, more flat-voiced EQ...

set up the presence higher than usual, and you are so good...

I use it as a character pedal in my board... "sets the tone for the board" so to speak :)

Lovepedal Eternity. I use one into my Stang Ray and it adds a nice glassy high end. Make sure you get the one (of many) with the tone knob that is a treble boost, rather than an actual tone knob.

Also, a bit more expensive, Bad Cat 2-Tone. This does a great job at giving you a Matchless-style drive. Both channels are super useful and I rarely turn mine off. I bought mine for $200, so it wasn't nearly as expensive as they are new. The pedal is also super responsive to tube changes.

I know it's not boutique, but I've had fantastic results from the vox ice 9. It doesn't have a cool paint job and it's endorsed by satriani (I know I know...) but I can't argue with the phat tone and sparkle it puts out. You owe it to yourself to at least give it a listen, it might surprise you. Be sure to try the modern and vintage options, the modern switch saved it for me in my rig.

I would recommend a Fitzo. I find that it becomes glassy as you turn up the treble knob like its adding biting hi mids. The feel still stays spongy unlike other low gainers that tend to get brittle the more you increase tone.

I would throw another vote for the SHO. I have the mad professor and 'glassy' is the term I always use to describe what it does to my top end-plus it's a pedal that seems to always want to be on.

MJM Phantom Drive for me, very big suprise as I don't care much for TS-type OD's.

I'm confused.. SHO refers to z.Vex super hard-on?
Or is the post above referring to MP SHOD?

Hmm I've tried the Eternity but it wasn't glassy. Silver Kiss sounds like the perfect pedal for it but it's discontinued, plus only the Trinity was around which was too big for me.

How about preamps? Like a Boss FA-1 clone or KORG SDD-3000 clone?

probably no better Vox glass than from this one: http://www.carlmartin.com/product%20ac%20tone.htm

Well at least in a stompbox.

My idea of glass, think Gretsch into an overdriven AC30. That's my definition of "glassy" and OH MY GOD IS IT A HEAVENLY SOUND.

LP Eternity to me is mellower and darker than this sound. I've been finding great success in the many rangemaster clones out there to get glassy. My favorite strat is loaded with DiMarzio FS-1s for now which get a nice dark-yet-stratty tone, and a nice treble booster (NOT a top booster) into my Blues Deluxe reissue get me to tonal heaven.

That, and my MJM Phantom OD with the tone knob up pretty high. That's surprisingly glassy for a TS clone.

I think glassy has a lot to do with what's before the pedals... I think low output pickups, bright strings into just about any amp can get glassy.

Frantone HepCat - very transparent OD pedal that works well as a boost as well. It adds some brightness and shimmer to the tone as well. Very "glassy" to my ears. Highly recommended pedal. One of my all time favorites.

My Klon clone does that. Perfect for P90's, but 'meh' for my Tele.

Most Treble Boosters will get you close - hence Rory Gallagher, Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore's preference for TBs with AC30s.

Just picked up a Zink SHOD/Eternity double pedal from a TGPer and used it last night at a gig (72 Deluxe Tele >> AC15C1)...and to my ears the SHOD was more round and creamy while the Eternity definitely added glassy top end to my tone. I generally prefer the former.
A SHO will also give you that added sparkle.

GOT IT.

I purchased a Retro-sonic Boost pedal today and it was absolutely stunning. Just added that high-end shimmer/glass I was looking for, like adding some subtle magic to my tone.

I saw it on sale and decided what the heck, tried it, loved it, bought it!

I still say the eternity, or at least eternity fuse, adds that glassiness for me. And in case you were still interested, I have a catalinbread silver kiss in the emporium.

Last piece on sale mate. Amazing pedal, really adds that sparkle (I'm using it like an EQ, and usually to push my delays). If I want I can use it as a solo boost (which is it's natural role) by cranking the Level knob.

I've never even messed with the dip switches yet (don't think I need the gain though).

I'm loving it!

Hmm, you know when you say 'glassy' and high end complexity, I immediately think of Robin Trower's tone, especially his last few albums. Thats real high end interesting stuff going on.

He uses the Fulltone RB sig drive into his old FD2 prototype now, before that the FD2 prototype & OCD I believe.

Well done on the find, Retro-Sonic really do some top drawer kit.

Nice buy bro, its a boss FA-1 clone right? TY having a sale now eh. No wonder you knew about the white light as well.. So much for having an unchanged board for a couple of years haha.

Hope this one serves you well man.

My board was unchanged during my time in the army but in 2011, I've bought and sold too many things. Damn!
