From what I understand the "E" serial number would dictate that is was a Squire Fender from 1984-1987. How much are these usually worth?

Its not a Squier but a Fender Japan based on the headstock. Starting price is very good but should run up to at least $500+

So what's the difference between the Squire "E" serial and the Fender "E" serial?

So what's the difference between the Squire "E" serial and the Fender "E" serial?

One says Squire, the other says Fender.

:)

I wasn't really talking about that.

More along the lines of pickups, body wood, etc and if they were different on either model or the same.

(if im not mistaken) They're the same, the squires switched from Squier name to fender in 1988. I have an 88 (Fender Tele) that i am original owner, and the 87' Squier's Ive seen seem identical

Also back then they came in black or butterscotch and had the top loading bridge and the Gotoh hardware.

One says Squire, the other says Fender.

This really was the only difference on these back then, the decal, otherwise the same bodies and necks and electronics went into both product lines until Fender Japan started putting Texas Specials into everything and the Squier product line moved to other Asian nations.

Is the one in the listing an ash body? Or alder?

I had a butterscotch one from that era but I think mine was basswood...or maybe light alder.. A great Tele!

So the body being made of Basswood doesn't effect the Tele tone?

For some reason my brain associates basswood with "cheap."

They are nice guitars, but they are not the same as the USA models of the same era. The hardware, pickups, and body wood are different.

$500 is a good round number for a butterscotch one in nice condition. Solid colors are maybe a little less.
