Being blessed with so many awesome builders that build such unique and awesome guitars, it seems like every day you see a new guitar that you want. My question is: What is the most aesthetically pleasing wood for an electric guitar top?

Flamed maple is absolutely beautiful, but there is a lot of variation. Flamed red wood and quilted mahogony is also fabulous looking. Koa is nice. I hate quilted maple personally.

I dig the koa. I especially like the variety of koa. Tight flames, wide quilty rolls, and every color under the sun. Good stuff.

If I can convince the builder to use it, I'm planning to custom order a guitar with a Macassar Ebony top. It can be absolutely breath-taking, but isn't used very often on electric guitar tops, though I've played a number of acoustics that use it for the backs and sides.

Personally, I prefer a *lightly* flamed maple... of course, the Baker I just bought is anything but lightly flamed... LOL!

I also like spruce, and lightly ribboned mahogany. They actually appeal to me more than any maple...

Hey Bryan,

I had the same idea you've got about an ebony top. Not to discourage you (hopefully you've already got the wood), but I gave up after running into one dead end after another, trying to source ebony big enough to work as a top. I tried countless supplier and lumber yards all over the US and got the same answer: "all we have is stock large enough for fretboards." I was told that the supply of ebony (especially gaboon) has dried up.

Hopefully you've had better luck than I had. I'd love to see it when you're done. Please post pics once it's complete.

R9Player, your bearclaw acoustic top is incredible. It's very rare to find a piece of spruce that figured. Who's building it?

Like some of the others posted here, I am mesmerized by too many beautiful woods to pick a solid favorite. I love cocobolo and macassar ebony is stunning. Katalox is another figured beauty and it is naturally purplish. A deep quilt maple always gets my attention too.

Ron Thorn is currently building me a masterpiece with a 1-pc quilted redwood top that is out of this world (IMO). Sorry, I don't have pics yet but will soon enough.

Mother Nature does it right in fine wood.

I've got a few sources for wood, but I did a quick check of Allied Lutherie's site and they have several sets of Macassar intended for acoustic guitar use. I'm not 100% sure it is in stock, but they do have specific pictures of sets of wood that I think are for sale.

This set is intended for thes sides of an acoustic, so it probably isn't wide enough to do a top, but they also have several sets for backs that would definitely be wide enough.

I tend to have a thing for solid 1 or 2 piece bodies, sans-tops on guitars I love the tone of. I like a solid limba or mahogany a lot.

I love the look of koa tops, especially the softer more fluid flamed ones. I've got a solid koa Thorn body in the works at the moment. No glued on top. Should be cool. :D

I thought more about my answer to this pole than any in recent memory. This was a hard decision!! Figured koa, bubinga, and spalted maple are my favorite natural-finished topwoods. I can't choose between them.

In the end I went with the classic: flamed maple. It's gorgeous natural, but takes a stain beautifully too and IMO looks vastly better in a burst finish than quilt does.

By the way, I forgot to say that I would never put Spalted maple on ANY guitar......it's not a figured wood....it's a diseased wood. If you like the way it looks and HAVE to use it...it better be a super thin veneer because from what I understand...its a very dead sounding piece of wood to work with.

More on the little seen figured Mahogany front, I built this guitar last year. The mahogany I used on the top was cut about 40 years ago for the veneer trade.

Lots of claims have been made about flames and quilts (and even
birdseye) being less "stable" than hard-rock maple.

My spalted axes sound anything but "dead" and they're
both hollow/semi-hollow.

A(n) (almost) fully hollow Carvin HF2:

http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~tms/fatboy/case_close.jpg

and a semi-hollow Gadow Custom Hollow:

http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~tms/gadow/body2.jpg

I'm not sure what Ryan did at Gadow, but Carvin soaked it in a
hardener because of the softness and thickness (or thiness!)
of the top. I doubt many have played a Holdsworth here, but
it's a very resonant axe. Anything but "dead"! I also doubt
many have played a Custom Hollow. You're really missing out!

But, I'm a lover of flames too:

http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~tms/bmg/c90p_13/body2.jpg

You just gotta respect the natural beauty of your wood, and
leave it "au natural"!

These are all beautiful...what horrible choices, huh? I voted spalted because the thread was pick the most attractive.

Just to clarify, I think spalting is caused by fungus that invades a dead tree as it decomposes and not by an infection or disease in a live tree. The wood is very soft because the fungus attacks and breaks down the wood fibers and stains the wood as it goes. The more the wood is spalted, the more the fungus has been at work. I wouldn't think that it would be a good choice because though soft, it is not intact like a spruce or other soft wood. There are voids left by the decay and in theory, it shouldn't resonate well. Sounds like talented folks have found ways of compensating for the decay and have achieved great results. I love the way it looks and have used it for a few of my wood projects (not instrument related).

tms13pin, those two spalted tops look really sweet.

jcground
07-18-2005, 03:00 PM
As I understand it, spalted wood that a luthier would use for a top is stabilized by sopping it in epoxy or some other agent. Raw spalted wood tends to be punky and difficult to work with. Stabilized wood can also be problematic, because the stuff you use on the wood can make it much harder than "normal" wood.

When properly done, I think spalted tops sound fine and look stunning.

That said, I'm a sucker for birds eye, so that got my vote.
