I've got about 300 records, mostly rock / hard rock from the '78 - '88 period. Most of them in excellent condition.

I've also got about 300 CDs -- again, mostly rock / hard rock and in excellent condition.

With everything on my PC and iPod... I think I just want to get rid of the stuff. It's just taking up space.

What's the best way to sell this stuff? ....Yard Sale, Craig's List, Record Stores, eBay,.... etc...? I live in the Richmond VA area in case there are any local referrals.

* It's not legal to sell the CD AND keep the music on your computer. Assuming you ripped the music from said CD, and didn't purchase it again through iTunes (or similar)

* I've had success selling CDs on amazon.

I got a surprisingly large amount of money selling LPs at a local used record store in Boston. This was a few years ago, but I think vinyl is still relatively hot. You can probably make more money selling them one-by-one or in lots on ebay or Amazon but you might be able to sell a bunch of them at once if there are still any used record stores in your area.

Also, Corey is correct, it's not legal to rip a cd to your computer, sell the cd and keep listening to the ripped version, FYI.

Of course, I would delete the music from my PC before selling any CDs.

Selling Amazon.... do you have to set yourself up as a business or soemthing, and post / sell / ship each CD individually? I guess I could do that on eBay too, but I was hoping to avoid the approach of individually selling these guys.

Yes, I listed each CD individually. I only did a couple at a time, so it wasn't a big hassle. If you want to list them all at once though it could be overwhelming.

Lol - you can try secondspin.com if you want to sell them all in bulk. Of course, they won't pay as much as selling individually on your own. I looked into it and they didn't see to give you much, but I'm mostly selling my collection of jazz and classical cds. I've got about 1500+ that I'm getting rid of - I'm thinking about just donating them to the public radio station.

Again I recommend looking for a local used record store, at least as a starting point. Richmond has a college or two, so there may still be physical used record stores around. If they're buying what you're selling, you'll be done in a half hour or so with cash money in your pocket.

Then you didn't look closely enough..

(I'm having formatting issues trying to copy/paste, but it is pretty clearly explained in #4 of that article.):
You can sell or give away the original CD, but only as long as you no longer have any copies of the music in any format (unless of course you have another copy that has been legitimately paid for).

its right there in #4:
You can sell or give away the original CD, but only as long as you no longer have any copies of the music in any format (unless of course you have another copy that has been legitimately paid for). You can not copy the CD onto your computer and load MP3’s of it onto your portable MP3 player, and then give the original CD to your best friend because you don’t need it any more.

They way I understand it, when you buy a CD, Album, tape, 8 track, mp3, etc.. you are getting a license to listen to the music.

You can transfer that license (sell the CD) to someone else, but you cannot replicate the license (make a copy for someone else, make a copy for yourself and sell the delivery medium).
