View Full Version : Best DI to pair with K&K PU?

I've got a K&K pure mini in a Gibson of mine and I'm about to put in one in another guitar. I've heard these pickups are best paired with a preamp of some kind as they don't have one (let me know if this is not the case). Does anyone have a recommendation for a direct box that pairs well with the K&K transducer pickups? Or, would someone recommend the "Ultra Pure Mini" over the standard given it has a preamp?

Yes get a preamp for it.
I have been using the K&K pure xlr for years and am very happy with it. It is simple and sounds good and built like a tank.
another popular option is the baggs para di. It is a good di but there will be a impedance mismatch with the pure. That usually just leads to a bump in the lower frequencies and can pretty much be dialed out.
There are other nicer preamps out there but they start to get spendy.

I have used and tried so many pickups and I always come back to the Pure western.
It just sounds good and has never let me down. My favorite acoustic pup.

I had a Taylor with a K&K Country Western, GREAT pickup, but definitely needed a DI. I found that a Fishman Dual Parametric DI sounded the best to my ears.

So a DI preamp would cost $150 to $200. Would getting the K&K Ultra Pure Mini(has built in preamp) essentially accomplish the same thing? It would save me a lot of money.

Well, the kit for the Parametric EQ that I built only cost $99, so that's a pretty good deal...

I use an Acousticmax with my mini western. You don't need to add a lot with this pick-up. It made my 1970's BC Rich B 28 come alive.

I use the pure xlr and it sounds fantastic, I have pure western minis in a collings and another steel string and they sound markedly better when using the pure xlr preamp.

I asked K&K about preamps, and why there was all this woofy bass going on when I plugged into my aer amp. Apparently the pure western minis want to see a particular input impedance, one that just about most acoustic preamps don't have.

anyways now I plug into the pure xlr and then into the aer, pure acoustic amplified bliss :-)

the only preamps that could handle the pure westerns was the Sarno Black Box (which has adjustable input frequency) and the DTar which is so flexible

Love my Orchid Muting DI from the UK with my K&K.

Getting great tone out of a Headway EDB-1 and a PWM in my Collings.

I've got a K&K preamp from some years back. I use either that, if I'm playing mandolin and guitar, or a Baggs preamp.
