I was kind of excited to see this and rented it the other day. Well, it was pretty good up until they laid movie cliché number 75 on us, the hardened exterior Marine with the softer side that no one knows about. For me, as soon as the story took that turn I was done. Some cool things though...

1) I thought the aliens were pretty cool, not overly CGI'd which was a nice for a change.

2) The walking mechanical dog-like thing that shot lightning bolts... :aok

3) The way the alien ships/drones manuvered, I don't recall seeing that done before.

4) It was definitely better than Skyline.

i thought it was a decent movie. thought skyline was good too. both sort of depressing, mostly not good outcome for the humans, entertaining, interesting.
didn't feel the need to analyze it and rip apart....it's entertainment....
i enjoyed it.

Seemed like an hour and a half commercial for the Marines to me. It was fine to have on as a mindless distraction, but there's no way I could have made it through the whole thing in a theater.

I ask this question honestly and earnestly: Is it possible the Marines paid for an advertisement in this movie, just like any other product placement?

"The Marines" are mentioned many, many times in this movie, always in glorious terms.

Too much BS chit chat.

No character development.

Not enough cutting edge action scenes.

I'd give it a 3 out of 10.

If I'd paid money to go out and see it in a theater I'd be pissed, and I'm a big Action/Sci-fi fan.

Pretty much a formulaic action/suspense/sci-fi flick. Good action sequences and the "clawing their way out against all odds" plot added some good tension. Not Picture of the Year but a fun ride nonetheless. I enjoyed it. Worth it for PPV or on-demand.

I thought it was so-so. Wish they would have told more about the aliens. We needed more info about them to make it believable.

Finally, someone else that liked Starship Troopers. Talk about your advertising; this was a recruiting film for Federal Service...

Yea, I enjoyed Battle: Los Angeles.

Predictable, but still entertaining. Wifey dissed it but it did keep her awake on a Saturday night (we need a life.....)

I did like the touch about running out of ammo and having to scavenge back at the destroyed base.

Agree with the comments that it was like an ad for the marines... video game style like their TV commercials.

I don't mind some shoot em up fun, but they lost me from the initial premise of the plot line... we're getting ready to blow up some aliens, but since we have a few hours to kill let's send in a squad of marines to rescue a handful of civilians... uh, hello? It should have been a 5 minute movie titled Nuke: Los Angeles.

Well, they needed water, so they land in the ocean, then proceed to leave the copious amounts of water to go to LA, the place that imports its water from a thousand miles away.

No additional information is going to make it more believable.

Yeah, it was definitely a commercial for the Marines. I thought about the "Nuke: Los Angeles" aspect too. But then it would have been a 5 minute movie instead of a 1-1/2 hour one. I try not to dissect the plots of these kinds of movies too closely, they will usually always fail in one way or another. It is what it is. But it was fun.

Battle of LA - I enjoyed. It was just smash up, blow the daylights out of them, no plausible storyline type of a movie.

Skyline - Grrrr! I want my money back type of movie. A very painful movie to watch.

Starship Troppers - Of all the movies mentioned so far this was my favorite. It hink it's time to rewatch it again.

The movie shows the world how highly the USMC values three migrant workers. It is the recruiters dream plot. It also reveals to the Chinese military how to take out all the future combat drones the US will spend billions of dollars to make to defend L.A.
That is all I have

It was just like the John Wayne, et alia, war movies I watched on TV as a child. Excepting that this time the spacemen were the nazis.

I liked Battle: Los Angeles (saw it in theaters), minus the cheezy parts.. ie. When all of the other soldiers drop one by one to help him. Just seemed really cliche.
The aliens were great looking, pretty realistic, like when they performed "surgery" on that one in the police station. The bit with the soldier that got separated from the group was good too, had me on the edge of my seat.

Now Skyline on the other hand... I refuse to watch that movie unless it's muted. The dialogue is mindblowingly retarded.

I thought it was disspointing. Liked the trailers but the movie was just kinda blah in the storyline. Effects were good and i liked the aliens too.

District 9 was much better.

Skyline was the biggest piece of crap ever made.

lemme get this straight....

Aliens travel across the galaxy at enormous expense to invade Earth. For our resources? no For food? no but to capture humans, rip out their brains, and use the brains to build more aliens? Really? no one in the writers room found that premise a little thin?

I have done some research and found the Marines were heavily involved in funding this movie. The film is basically a product placement for the Marine Corps.

Please...no.

It was such a great movie. Why tarnish it with a sequel that will surely have a bigger budget and a smaller vision?

I always assumed that the gung ho space marine aspect of Starship troopers was meant as parody and word of warning against the mindless military advertising of movies like Battlefield LA and Skyline. Am I wrong in that? That at least struck me as the big difference - that SS feels partially like a send up where Battlefield LA is deadly earnest in it's message (and weaker for it imho)
