View Full Version : If You Could Have One Free Guitar and Amp What Would They Be?

Amp360

OK - so you have the chance to get one guitar and one map for free.

You can not sell it - so taking the most expensive one and just trading/selling is not an option.

One guitar you don't have to pay for and will keep and play forever along with your others.

For the guitar I would take a Gibson ES-295 because I always wanted one and never buy one when I see them for sale.

For the map I would take a Tweed Fender Pro - the old wide panel because I really like my wide panel Deluxe and don't see them for sale much.

What is yours?

For the guitar I'd have to say a 65 strat, or a very cool custom shop version of one.

The amp would be a Fender Princeton Reverb from the same era...

I'm not real hard to please:D

I don't know the answer to the question...that would require a lot of thought.

But, I can immediately say I wish I were cool enough to refer to an amp as a "map".

Pretty sure that will never happen, though.

That's pretty close to mine, too, except that it would be a mid-50s L-5CESN with staple pickups (plus long scale, carved top, etc.). Might prefer a narrow panel Tremolux, but they're all in the ballpark.

Or, it just might be my '54 Guild X-440 and brown Vibrolux or Gibson GA-40. Can't really complain about those.

For a map, an iPad will do.

1) I'd like a lightweight, heavily-flamed, tea-burst, '59 Les Paul (like the famous Stanleyburst that's on the cover of Beauty Of The Burst).
2) I'm thinking Japan, because the people and culture fascinates me. I'd love to take a month traveling the country.

Wide panels are definitely cool. I had a wide panel deluxe for a while, and it was a little monster. I passed up a wide panel Pro a couple of years ago, and really shouldn't have --great grit, but also enough oomph to avoid getting flabby with an archtop. Good stuff.

I'll have a 1979 Gibson Flying V, white with white matching headstock, white pickgaurd, black trussrod cover, coil-tapped humbuckers (Duncan Custom - bridge, Duncan Antiquity - neck), speed knobs (black), Grover locking tuners, Tonepros bridge and tailpiece, a neck like on my reissue V, and hardshell case.

I thought it was a '60?

Drop the needle on track 1, side 1, an in 2 seconds, you'll say "Oh. I get it now"

For real, it was "politician" before there was "politician." If that makes sense. Well "stepping out" is. The whole album is great though.

For real, it was "politician" before there was "politician." If that makes sense. Well "stepping out" is. The whole album is great though.

The differences between 59 and 60 can be small depending on when they were made. Like my 60 is early, early 60 and I honestly think it is just made in 59 and finished in 60.

My friend has a 60 and the neck is much smaller then my 60 - but really I don't know much about Eric Clapton but those are really cool guitars if you get the opportunity to get one make sure you do. I mean, expensive but killer.

The Marshalls are not the same though. I had a new one and the tubes were different. The old ones use these giant tubes and the new ones use small tubes which makes for a different sound. Still good just not the same.

Some of the new ones are pretty good too.

Amp360
06-27-2011, 10:24 AM
You should see if you can dial in the Beano "Stepping Out" tone with that line6 and put it up against the Marshall.

:clips

Mmh0AcrKczc

No. I took down the other clip because some TGP people sent me vile PMs via YouTube regarding some unrelated videos I had up there of my son playing with his friends that I had posted to send to my father.

I'm done posting videos for that reason. There are some real sickos here.

That being said, that does pretty much sound like that guitar and map does when you play it - one loud map though, it has a great clean sound when on normal volume. I use the clean more then the cranked sound - although I have a clip of that guitar and map cranked up that a few people have heard due to me using it on the solo for a song I played on. Juse the other day I sent it to Scott A. the mod as we were talking LPs and a while back a few people checked it out.

A '65 Strat is a great choice. If I were to learn guitar, I'd probably want a Rainsong - they're gorgeous. I wouldn't need an amp until I could actually play something well. And when I'm doing that walk-on-water thing, it's okay if they get wet :D

I'm not entirely sure if his is modded or not. From what I know, he's only used it live once (grand opening concert at the Cabo Wabo Cantina in 1990). There are some vids of it on action on Youtube. I know he used it as his primary amp on the F.U.C.K. album, which (along with Balance) are the top of the heap for EVH tones for me.

About 35 years ago, I was in my friend's guitar store. A cat walked in with a '58 korina V. It was absolutely dead mint - and in the original plastic shipping bag inside the case. Same guitar I have now, but I'd take a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a 4x12 cab given an amp choice.

Guitar, I'd probably go with the Gibson ES-359 AAA flame top:

Choosing an amp was harder... there are several I might choose, but I'll pick one I can easily lift :)
A silverface Princeton Reverb:

If I'm choosing based on resale value, I'm going with:

Pristine '59 'burst and Dumble Overdrive Special.

Otherwise, give me a James Tyler Classic Custom and a mint '64 Fender Deluxe Reverb.

OP rules say you can't resell--you'll have to make do with that Tyler and Fender Deluxe Reverb :red

(let me know where you pick them up so I can get my ES-359 and Princeton Reverb)

I'd take my old '77 Les Paul Special that I foolishly sold 20 years ago.
And a map with an X on it that tells me where the pirates buried their treasure.

:roll:roll:roll:spit

I'll take a single cut '54 LP Jr. & a '55 Tweed Deluxe.

Though, I wouldn't sneeze at an Esquire from the same era or any number of older Vox, Hiwatt or Orange amps.

What the hell... 59 Les Paul and a 70-71 50 Watt Marshall stack. If the 59 is too much, I'd take an early 60s SG Standard.

Amp360
06-28-2011, 06:44 AM
What is the difference between the 60s and 70s Marshalls? I know the 80s ones and late 70s are different but when did they first change?

scottlr
06-28-2011, 06:49 AM
I am not a Marshall expert, so I am not sure, but I used to have a 71 50 watter full stack, and it was the best sounding amp I ever owned. It was too loud for most of the places we played in those days, and I refused to use an OD pedal in those days. I'd love to have that exact amp back again. The 60s had plexi fronts and the 50 watt a smaller box. Later after mine, they started adding master volumes. That's about all I know. Before the 50 watt, I had a 100 watt that was even louder, obviously.

I want a 58 or 59 burst (whichever is worth more) in great condition and a Dumble.

Then...

I sell them and buy the guitar, amp, and house I REALLY want...

The rules are you can't sell or trade so it would be just for enjoyment purposes.

Since I already have Strats, Les Pauls, Tele...

I'll take a mid-60s Gibson Firebird with a P90 in the bridge.

For an amp: something that sounds good at low volume. Not even sure what amp that'd be. All mine are too loud for the house.

I'm going with things that you possibly could get your hands on...so no '59 burst or Clapton's Marshall combo...

I'm thinking one of Ron Thorn's Cal series...the S/S with a mahogany body...koa top...Brazilian board and flamed maple board...

..and I've always wanted a Soldano SLO....purple or boa...

..but if it has to be a map...maybe one of Colby, Kansas...

Custom built Double Neck ES style Gibson and a Dumble.

Might as well go big if it is going to be free.

Had one in the 80s that drove me crazy with little minor issues but was otherwise the most comfortable guitar to play I've owned.

Add in a mid 60s Deluxe Reverb and I'd be pretty happy.

Hrmm... Probably a vintage version of my #1 strat... hopefully a little lighter weight, a little more resonant and a leaking a little more mojo.

For amps... hell, if I don't have to move it around, probably a Blonde Showman and a matching cab with two JBL D130Fs.
