I hate to say this, it is sort of embarrassing but the best tacos I have had were at chipotle. I live on the east coast, and that is the best I have seen. In my travels, for whatever reason I never got a taco.. bummer.

My favorite tacos are at a little mexican market about 2 minutes from my house. They only have barbacoa and carnitas on the weekends but HOLY MUTHER****IN' SHIT are they awesome. Like a meat explosion of of ecstasy in your mouth. Their other tacos are good too. There is also another mexican restaurant not too far that has cabeza tacos, which I love.:drool:love::banana

There's a little fishing town in Mexico called Loreto Bay; I had fish tacos at a restaurant there called Picazon that were stunning, astounding, divine, thoroughly transcendent, and several other adjectives that I don't have the vocabulary to call up. They were without a doubt the best tacos I've ever had.

Being a native Angeleno and Mexican American I have to say that here in Los Angeles we have quite possibly the best and biggest selection of tacos anywhere. In fact, I would say that tacos are to Los Angeles what Hot Dogs are to New York. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of taco stands s spread all throughout LA the most famous of which is King Taco. It is a pretty big and well known local chain with locations all throughout LA. Really good and flavorful meat. As a note, there are two types of tacos. Hard shell and "soft" tacos the latter of which are the most prominent here in LA.

If you feel a little more adventurous and brave you should really try some of the sidewalk taco carts or taco trucks in East LA or any neighborhood where there is a large hispanic community. These places are open every weekend very late and are a perfect way to end the night after a few drinks. There are some hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. If you go at night just be aware of your surroundings (it is a lot safer than most people realize), be prepared to brush up on your Spanish and you're in for an experience of a lifetime.

Now onto the best taco I've ever eaten. The best taco I've ever eaten has to be from Tacos Tumbras in Grand Central Market in Downtown LA. The sheer size of the Tacos alone makes them legendary. They give you so much meat in each taco that you really get two tacos for the price of one. The flavor of the meat and the selection is unsurpassed. They have your standard Carne Asada and Carnitas fare along with more interesting meats like Cabeza (head), Lengua (tongue), Sesos (brains) and Tripas (stomach). They also serve burritos and delicious tortas which is a Mexican version of a sandwich. If you ever visit LA then you need to go to this place. If you have doubts then read the reviews below about this place from people who have gone there themselves.

I love the tacos at EL Matador, a truck that parks in an auto repair shop where the 101 hits Western. I love El Parian in Pico Union for birria and for carne asada. I love My Taco in Highland Park for barbacoa.

The best I've had so far were at a little family restaurant in my home town, owned by a Mexican family. They mostly serve typical American fare, but there is a small section on the menu that offers tacos. They look a lot like the picture in dmarkj22's post, and are only $2.50 a pop! They used to be fantastic, but eventually the selection of meats got smaller and smaller and they didn't offer many flavors during the week, etc. I just had a couple a few weeks ago and they were completely bland. I fear they may be going out of business soon...

While I agree with my fellow Angelenos that the best tacos in the world are right here in Los Angeles, I have to add that the best tacos are free. As I write this, Ms Vee's friend (who is staying with us for a month and is Hispanic and also a native Angeleno), is out getting tacos. I'm not sure where she went to get them, but she assured us that they're great. I'll provide a full report when she gets back.

There are some great recommendations here, some of which I haven't been to in years and some that I've never checked out, but I will now. Sometimes a new take on an old thread works. Thanks.

Last year my brother took me to this place in San Francisco. I don't know the name of it but it's kind of in a run down neighborhood and it's just a giant square room with a high ceiling.

They also have all these crazy drinks (not booze) in big jars behind the counter. It was really good.

I always try to get Mexican on the west coast.

<<OK, the place is called Escuela Taqueria and it's near the Grove. It's fairly new. Just killer tacos. We had the BBQ rib tacos (mmmmm), poblano tacos, shrimp tacos, bass tacos and carne asada tacos, rice, beans and guacamole. They only have one kind of salsa, which is good but needed a little more heat. All the tacos were excellent. It's a little hole in the wall off of Beverly and doesn't take credit cards.>>

The al pastor at "tacos y salsa" on S federal in Denver. Huge flavor. It's a hole in the wall, but really good. Soft corn tortillas that are made there, loads of meat, with a small salsa bar with the onions, cilantro and lime to add on. The tacos are small, but fantastic.

for 7 bucks you get 3 tacos(all the same kind or 3 different ones), plus rice and beans. The rice and beans were nothing special and I'll skip them next time.

I'm glad you're going to go. You won't be disappointed. Please post a review of the place on TGP after you go so I can find out about your experience. A couple things to remember if you haven't already gone to Grand Central Market. The place closes at 6pm and parking is free for one hour with validation from Tacos Tumbras and you also have to get it validated at the information desk. Also, there's a Mexican bakery right next door to Tumbras that sells delicious and refreshing Aguas Frescas (kind of like a Mexican Kool Aid only better) that is perfect for washing down your tacos. Bon Appetite!!

Dude the red sauce at King Taco is so delicious man. Super hot yet full of deep, rich, smoky flavor. My buddy and I eat so much of it we both perspire and get runny noses while we're eating tacos. I always take some home. I've always wanted to know their secret recipe for it. For those of you who have never been to King Taco and want to try it be warned, THIS STUFF IS WAY HOT!!!

In rosarito mexico I went to this place called taqeria 2000. You walk up and there is one guy cooking outside the actual stand under the tin patio and when a piece of meat is done cooking he throws it on the three stump chopping block.

They put jack cheese inside a small flour tortilla and put it on the griddle to melt the cheese then its carne asada, guacamole, and salsa. Not really authentic but I dream about those tacos

The tortillas are the key IMO. The best tacos I have had used tortillas that were griddled just moments before eating and made from fresh ground corn masa, not rehydrated instant Maseca. After that your fillings could be skirt steak, pork carnitas, cochinita pibil, smoked brisket (while not "authentic" is damn good too.), grilled chicken, etc. A little chopped onion, cilantro, and a little bit of what ever salsa you like best to finish it off and to me that's taco heaven.

The classic "street food" taco consists of the following:

Two grilled small corn tortillas

Cut-up pieces of carne asada, buche, carnitas, barbacoa, lengua, suadero, al pastor, or cabeza (that's most of them).

diced onions and cilantro

salsa

Every place has their own recipes for the meats and salsas. I would suggest looking for a good carne asada recipe online. The salsa will be trickier. I'll do some poking around when I have some time today and try to find one.

They look like this:

For grilled skirt steak tacos this is my favorite salsa.
http://www.post-gazette.com/food/20021219vegbooksb.asp

This one is also really good with anything smoked-brisket, chicken, etc.

1 ripe Hass avacado
3 medium sized tomatillos
1 habanero chile, seeded
1/2 cup cilantro
1 tsp salt

Spin all these in a food processor until smooth adding just enough water to get a salsa consistancy.

Also this place is in Durham NC, owned and operated by a family from Veracruz. I don't see how it's location has any bearing on on it's quality or authenticity.

I consider San Francisco to be a burrito town (and LA to be a taco town), but you're right -- those tacos from the El Toyanense truck are awesome!

This is what's truly different about the LA taco scene than other places that I've been -- the sheer volume of taco choices we have. Especially on the Eastside of the city or on the north side of the Valley, between the brick and mortar taquerias, taco trucks and "illegal pop-up" taco stands, we've got an embarrassment of riches. This....! H-town!

I used to love going to Leo's:

Leo's Mexican Restaurant
In 2001 Leo's Mexican Restaurant closed its doors (http://www.houstonpress.com/2001-03-01/restaurants/the-chips-are-down/), to the chagrin of Tex-Mex connoisseurs and ZZ Top fans. In his younger years, founder Leo Reynosa, Sr. rode with Pancho Villa. When he opened the restaurant on Shepherd Drive in 1942, he decorated the walls with photos of Villa and relics from the Mexican Revolution. The menu recounted Leo's adventures as a revolutionary.

In 1993, the restaurant moved to 77 Harvard Street, after the landlord of the Shepherd location tripled the rent. Leo died two years later. The lease on the new location, which was just off Washington Avenue, expired in 2001. Leo's sons Felix and Robert Reynosa closed when they couldn't find another property they could afford in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. More than a thousand customers signed a list asking to be notified if the restaurant found a new location.

Another Reynosa brother, the late Leo Jr., once worked for ZZ Top when the bad toured. Band member Billy Gibbons became a loyal customer of the restaurant. While the restaurant may be gone, a Leo's Tex-Mex feast is forever immortalized in the double-truck photograph that graces the inside cover (http://www.rockandrollplanet.com/classiccoverart.html) of ZZ Top's 1973 Tres Hombres album.

Ok, we'l stipulate the best tacos are in LA or Mexico.

All due respect to Angelenos....but having been raised in San Diego, and then moved to LA for music, the Mexican food in SD is the best in the West. I honestly couldn't find anything comparable to SD Mexican food in LA when I lived there (from the 90s through 2005). And I even went to Latino neighborhoods around LA in search for good Mex food.

Amazingly, even the 'mediocre' Mexican restaurants in South Bay San Diego (Chula Vista, San Ysidro, National City; all near the border) blow away most LA Mex restaurants. What a difference one hundred miles makes. Just my opinion.

BTW: I recently had some awesome tacos at this place called Rigobertos Tacos in San Marcos. As I marveled at the flavor, my nieces told me that the reason they're so good is that they dip the corn tortillas in some kind of oil before putting them on the grill. Not good for the heart, but man, so delicious...

When it comes to room service price is never an indication of quality. Most hotels use the cheapest crap they can get from food service wholesalers.

If you wanted a Mexican bnreakfast in Chicago you should have gone to Xoco. It's infinitly better than McDonald's and still much less money than room service.

Also, burritos aren't tacos.

Best beef tacos I've had were from a street vendor in San Pancho, Mexico.

But I can make some pretty killer tacos al pastor on my Big Green Egg:

Start with a couple pounds of Becker Lane (http://www.beckerlaneorganic.com/) pork shoulder. Slice it into long, thin strips.

In a blender, combine these items for marinating:

A 3 1/2-ounce package achiote (http://www.rickbayless.com/recipe/glossary?id=6) paste
3 canned chipotle chiles en adobo, plus 4 tablespoons of the canning sauce (more if you want it spicier)
1/4 cup vegetable or olive oil
3/4 cup water

Cover the pork strips in the marinade, and refrigerate for a couple hours.

Get your grill started. Slice up some onions and pineapple, and grill them for a couple minutes until nicely browned. Then chop them up, and transfer to a skillet on low heat with a little oil.

Now grill the pork strips, quickly. If they're thin enough, and the grill is hot, it should only take 1-2 mins per strip. Don't overcook, or they'll dry out. You want them juicy.

Once grilled, chop them up, and add to the onion and pineapple mixture in the skillet, keep on very low heat.

Now put a pizza stone on the grill, and let it get blazing hot. Get the best, freshest corn tortillas you can find (make your own if you have time), and heat them up on the pizza stone. If it's hot enough, it should only take less than a minute per side. This part is key: Fresh tortillas cooked on a really hot stone have a special, smokey flavor and tender texture to them that is hard to beat. Blows away tortillas in a pan.

Now combine ingredients, and add salsa of your choice, with lime slices on the side.

Oh man, is this good! Next time I'll take photos.

Years ago here in eastern PA, there was a taco place called Take-A-Taco. Best taco's ever, served in fried tortillas. They ended up moving their location, then closing. At that point they would open a stand at local fairs and carnivals, and me and all the hardcore fans would line up to get our fill of overpriced 5$ tacos. About two years ago, a new taco place opened up 2 miles from home, called Santa Fe Taco. I went in the first week they opened, and was delighted to find out it's a relative of the Take-a-taco people, and now I can have them whenever I want, without the outrageous fair prices. The taco salad is awesome, and I just love the homemade guacamole. Needless to say, they know my family by name.:)

Don't give up hope if you're not in LA/Mexico. Regardless of a city' reputation for lack of good tacos, when I'm traveling I just search out the local latino community (which these days just about every good sized city has one or more, even if they're small). I've found local latinos are usually eating good food, but in those cities most anglos simply don't know their places exist. And if you can't find the community, start by googling the Mexican grocery stores. Often they have good taquerias inside, and if they don't just ask around and get recommendations to the places they like. When I moved to Clearwater, FL, most every anglo I spoke to told me you couldn't find good Mexican here. Truth is, once I started searching the latino neighborhoods I found ~25 places within a 20 minute radius. Definitely search out the ones that make/cook their own tortillas fresh before serving. Huge difference.

La Cabaña del Tío (LCDT) is great.....fortunately it's very close to home. If you ever get up to Tarpon Springs, check out Cielito Lindo on Tarpon Avenue. It's all personal preference, but I like it better than LCDT. Pretty crazy given Tarpon Springs is practically the Greek capital on the U.S.

Also, I don't get the praise for Taco Bus in Tampa....not the best in the Tampa area, imo.

I actually live in Northwest Tampa and have driven past Cielito Lindo several times before. Thanks for the tip! I agree about Taco Bus. The place doesn't look or smell clean.

Al Pastor tacos at the Maxwell Street Market in Chicago...I don't remember the name of the stand, but stood in line behind Rick Bayless, so I knew they had to be incredible!

I had a few really good pork tacos at some joint in durham NC. I knew it was going to be good when I walked in and so it was packed and there was only a couple non mexicans besides myself eating. The menu board was all spanish. They were simple without all the toppings, just a good smoked pork, lime wedge and some fresh made peper sauce.

Our layover hotel in San Diego was the Holiday Inn Bayside. There was this stand (only a drive through or walk up window, with a couple of picnic tables around...big orange colored building with a steep sloped pointy roof. Can't remember the name. It's been a good, long while since I've been there.

To get there, you'd go out the front door of the hotel, turn right and go to either the first major intersection (Nimitz) or the next one (Laning)...it's been a while, and it may not even still be there...but that place made the best tacos anywhere I've ever been. And I've been around.

Los Comales?

I'm not sure of the name. It was right off interstate 85. I was coming back from indoor storm. The only thing I remember it had a sign that read best tacos in town or something to that effect.

Just saw the picture you posted. That's the place.

I miss the West Coast.

Where I live now ( Central PA ) there's a few OK Mexican restaurants, but the closest thing to a Taqueria
near me is owned and operated by Anglos who are at best clueless about what is a good taco.

Hint: Hamburger meat drowned in grease and questionable spices with salsa from a jar is not a correct choice of meat item...

I used to live a few blocks from an awesome Carneceria in Nevada.

There used to be this market at the base of Horton Plaza in down town San Diego that had a deli counter and they made the best Mahi Mahi Tacos. Just amazing. Grilled with a great yogurt sort of sauce with cabbage and the best pico de gayo. Excellent

There's a little place in my town, Casita Taqueria , and they have great tacos with various fillings - my favorite being the barbacoa. What really makes them is the home made corn tortillas, which are delicious.

Por Que No? (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/www.porquenotacos.com) on a trip to Portland last year.

Walked by the place on our way to Amnesia brewing and took notice of the line out the door and down the street. On our way back to the car there was no line, so even though I wasn't even that hungry I had to find out what the place was about. So very glad I did. The chorizo tacos in particular were amazing, and yet so simple and clean-flavored.

There are a bunch of taquerias in Philadelphia that I haven't made it to yet, but I really need to get on that. Love me some good, rustic tacos (i.e. nothing like the garbage you get at Taco Bell).

I lived in the land of magical tacos 20 years ago....it left an indelible impression. To this day I am a certified chile pepper addict, I order hatch greens to the house every harvest, etc..I have been in exile in the Northeast for the last two decades....In my quest to replicate those sublime taco experiences; I used to have friends who remained in San Diego FREEZE tacos and overnight them...until recently tacos in NYC had sucked!!!!! It's still hard to find something that really catches the vibe....Anyhow, I've more than learned to roll my own. Got some good Mexican grocers where I'm at, I'll pick up my own masa...

When I do El Carbon' I roll out my kenro, light up some binchotan and I skewer and grill the beef...you gotta have that coal flavor...:

Los Comales is great. Mark Fuqay (Motorave Guitars) is a bay area native
and former SoCal resident, he loves the place too.

It's widely acknowledged that due to proximity with the border, San Diego has the best Mexican food overall (as witnessed in this very thread). If passing through San Diego, you must try the fish tacos (and lobster, shrimp, etc) at South Beach Bar and Grille in Ocean Beach. Amazing food! Further south is a place called Tacos El Gordo in Chula Vista. Out of all the taco stands here (Robertos, Cotixan, Los Panchos, etc), I feel they are the best. Here's a link to a thread about taco stands in SD - both South Beach and El Gordo get raves:

El Gordo is an extension of a franchise from TJ. The beauty of living in San Diego is that you can hire a taqueria from south of the border to come to your place and cater your party/event.

Absolutely! In fact, I have to say that some of the best tacos I've had were in the backyard parties of my many Mexican friends here, where the food was catered.

The Robertos on 3rd Ave Chula Vista is still great - quite a few other Robertos around SD have cut costs, and thus quality, I feel.

Amaya's Taco Village.

The corn tortilla taco shells are fresh-fried... delivered to the table warm out of the fryer. And the pico is fresh, too.
