So OF COURSE, after spending $4,000 (all the $$ in my savings BTW) on a plumbing re-route, I'm leaving for work this morning, and my garage door goes crooked when it got about halfway down and started stalling.

I stopped it, and went in the garage to check, and one of the rollers on the top had come off and was on the ground. I got on a step ladder and inserted it into the hinge and used a pair of pliers to work it back into the track. Problem solved right?

Nope. I tried to get the door to raise or lower, and both times after about 2 seconds in either direction, it would auto-stop. At this point I also noticed the roller at the bottom on the opposite side had come out of the track as well. I placed it back in, and the door still won't operate. So right now, its halfway down and crooked, and won't budge either way...

I am not a handyman, and do not know what to do. Is there any type of repair on a garage door that is simple? Or do I need to call a professional (and hope he takes I.O.U.'s :( )?

Check the springs. Sounds like one of them is broken. Those are easy to replace.

You might try disengaging the door opener (pulling the handle that's on the chain between opener and door) and see if you can manually close the door. Inspect the tracks carefully to see if there's anything in there that is causing the rollers to bind up.

This is best done with a helper to hold the door to keep it from slamming down when released!

True. Good advice, and also make sure nothing is in way.

I used to repair garage doors in my youth, pm me if you have any specific questions. Maybe I can help steer you in the right direction.

Broken spring could be the culprit, had that happen a few times....But when the spring goes, the door just falls *WHAM* and whatever's in its way gets a fresh gargage-door-shaped dent....
