Your notifications now always appear, note that this is location process and it will sap your battery.
Now you can see all of your notifications at your lock screen, you only need to swipe them. Because having a big red number wasn't obvious enough.

To do list, really? Do people these days need to be reminded of even the simplest of tasks? Notes not good enough anymore?

Twitter is integrated! Good thing android has had this for how long?

Now you can get rid of pop-ups etc when browsing the internet and *gasp* add bookmarks! Nice to know that the pop-up blocker is finally being added to the technology that is supposed to "replace" computers. Also a good thing it doesn't support flash so half the pop-ups are just blank boxes to begin with.

Yo dawg, we made it so you can take pictures and then EDIT them while still looking at the photo, Nikon cameras anyone? And you can use a button to take the picture instead of pressing it on the screen.

Split keyboard because iPad is so big that we had to add this so people can actually use the stupid thing. actually something new, but basically because of a previous fault, large screen is large.

iOS is the MOST POPULAR GAMING PLATFORM. I find this hilarious, anyone who owns a mac does not play games, anyone who plays games knows this. all game developers know this, you'll notice only the most popular games which rake in millions and millions a month even have a mac version. End of story.

To me, each and every single one of these (minus the split keyboard for iPad) is something that SOMEONE ELSE has already come up with.

look at other brands phones before the launch of the iPhone and then look at them 6+ months after the launch...

thanks for the enlightenment.

...and yet I still think my iphone4 is a brilliant device. hmmm...

oh, and as far as gaming goes I own a PS3, a Wii, a Gamecube, a DS and a GBA as well as a laptop and desktop PC. I've spent more time playing games on my iphone in the past year than my PS3.

Apple takes what already exists and refines it for simplicity in the majority of cases. As evident in that notifications drop down thing for example (from android) - again with the iPhone messenger (blackberry messenger). I doubt also that the notifications menu will be a location service (i.e constant GPS usage) - there is no reason for it to be. Any information with regard to the weather features in the notification area will most lilkely recieve its location through triangulation - as it does already. Thus no battery sapping.

The photo editing tools that allow you edit photos before saving them are only implemented now because apple has never branded the iPhone as a phone that replaces a camera. Rather just a phone with a camera. Perhaps these tools will make more sense with the forthcoming rendition of the iPhone which is rumored to have a better camera in some form. I don't see how any addition of features is a bad thing - even if they have been implemented on other phones before.

One thing Apple/iPhone has over Google/Android - is uniformed handsets. The problem with android for me is the fact that there are hundreds of different handsets with hundreds of different specs - thus each handset has different capabilities and some don't run certain programs as well as others do. With iPhone, there is only ever one handset configuration on sale at one time (with the exception of knocked down prices on the former model in order to clear stock), and frequently apps are designed to be able to run well on all renditions (from 3GS upward - though I'd assume that this will be dropping off the compatibility list soon).

The only thing that can really be complained about before you've even had a chance to use these new features - is the way it is marketed - apple have a tendency to suggest that all new features are ones they have created themselves. Sometimes this is obviously true - sometimes they are refined, apple-ised versions of current technology/ideas.

i think it's fair to say that Apple is first to market where it matters and best in market where it matters. most of the time.

there are some notable exceptions, e.g. Final Cut Pro X.

the company is not without its flaws, including but not limited to a draconian closed system and lack of customizability. but in terms of general user experience, no one else has as many bases covered as Apple.

I agree here although isn't the closed system and lack of tweekability what makes it as powerful as it is?

the split keyboard for tablets was developed by microsoft and announced for windows 8 a little while before apple announced ios5.

I have two Macs, an iPad and an iPod Touch.
I have been to two WWDC's.
I've been using Macs since the Mac 512k in 1986.
I absolutely adore Macs.

My phone is an Android.

Because if I wanted nonretarded notifications, widgets, and over the air sync, I'd still be waiting, instead of having been using those features for the past 3 years.

I recently 'upgraded' to an iPhone for many reasons but I find that I have actually LOST some functionality that I had with the Windows Mobile phones I had been using previously, one of which is over the air sync (although is it via Active Sync through a bluetooth connection but it is still wireless). There are some things I like about the iPhone but sometimes I miss the 'un walled' environment.

Edit: You can get some over the air sync functionality with the iPhone using me.com but it costs $100 per year at the moment and only syncs contacts and calendar (at least if you are using Windows as your desktop OS).

No platform is perfect or an end-all everything. Apple more than any company reminds me of Fender. How so?

Both companies succeed in being ground-breaking and completely behind the curve at the same time.

However, the slogan rings true "If you don't have n iPhone, you don't have an iPhone". I'd almost say the same thing with Fender. Many people make better Strats, but in the end I love everything Fender, and when I am not playing Fender gear I am playing something built to sound like Fender lol. My Shiva is basically a Super right. I live for CIJ Strats.

My ex had an Android and so many things like instant search, T-Mobile service, Google integration were superior. However, media management was lacking. With iPhone I can literally plug it into a computer and Serato and Traktor will allow me to DJ off the playlists! Also, 2 Motorola Cliq's she had died and needed replacement - blue screen of death.

Also, the popularity of iPad/iPhone lead to ubiquity that allows App Developers and After Market Product makers to come in and monetize themselves selling to a robust and active buying audience. Fender reminds me of the same paradigms only with guitar technology.

I have done the anti-Apple comparisons to death, and still find its better to just buy Apple. Sad, but true.

Btw, I am neutral on this matter though I own Apple gear and cuddle with a photo of Steve Jobs at night.

IMO new notification center is a great idea..saves me from unlocking the phone & switching to the app then touching again to see the content. When the phone is playing music docked in the speaker & locks, I can still see my email without going thru all the steps above.

Location based reminders seem very useful..."pickup item at hardware store". Next time I'm at the store, I'll get a prompt. If location based notifications suck the battery, I turn them off.

Cool thing about the reader bookmarks is they are auto loaded into other devices. If I find something I want to read on my iPhone, I can find it later on the iPad.

Airplay mirror - whatever is on the devices shows up on your TV. I'm curious how this will work with apps esp music apps.

Thanks for wireless sync, tabbed browsing and email enhancements Apple!

If I were a mod, this thread would be deleted. I'm SO tired of all the iOS/Android bickering! I can barely read BoyGeniusReport anymore. I'm disappointed to see it infect TGP.

It's actually true, though. Mac OS and iOS are different. iOS has been catering to gamers for a couple years and they're putting more and more focus on it. They have some impressive stuff too.

same with 95% of iOS users.

iOS games are mostly quick timewasters and don't offer the same experience that "serious gamers" are into.

LOL, yeah right. Theres just not nearly enough COD retreads on the app store.

Seriously, I've been playing videogames since the late 70's. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm at least as "serious" a gamer as you or anyone else is. I can honestly say I've found more really interesting, creative and entertaining games for the iphone over the past couple years than I have for the PC or consoles I own. Games like Fruit Ninja, Silverfish, Flight Control, Tilt To Live are fantastic classic arcade style games. Just becuase they are quick pick up and play games doesn't mean they don't appeal to "serious" gamers. Unless of course your definition of serious is spending three hours camping out and head-shooting noobs that is...

Definitely. Even the high budget games are amazing. Dead Space, Infinity Blade, etc.. They even just came out with a new version of Street Fighter IV that has online multiplayer. That's a big leap from Angry Birds.
