Going to be in Atlanta (Stockbridge, actually) for a week, helping a friend move down.
I suppose I've got to try some bbq, so what's good?
Any must-try suggestions for a good, no great local joint for some southern tastes?

I was gonna say FatMatts... but in the realm of good BBQ... it really isn't all that. You want good sushi, try Genki or Nakato.

Atlanta really doesn't claim to be a big bar-b-que mecca. If you are going to Stockbridge for a week you will be wanting to get out a bit. (By the way, Stockbridge is where Collective Soul was formed)

I would go south on 75 (or take Hwy 42) about 25 miles to Jackson and go here:

http://www.freshairbarbecue.com/locations.html

It is on Hwy.42 which goes all the way to Stockbridge if you want to go the "scenic" route. It will take you through McDonough which has a nice town square, which is a very Southern thing. After Jackson about10 miles further will take you to Juliette which is where they filmed "Fried Green Tomatoes". 20 miles further and you'll be in Macon and can check out the Allman Brothers House. Check their schedule. THAT is a worth while tour, gear wise, and real interesting if you are a fan.

Oh yeah, back to food. Atlanta is like any good sized city with a wide range of really excellent restaurants. Stockbridge is probably 20 miles from any of them. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Dean's in Jonesboro, they only serve pulled pork and brunswick stew but it is top notch. Jonesboro is just the next town over, well worth the trip.

Here is some info:

Bub-Ba-Q is excellent, currently #1 on National BBQ Rankings. I know they've got a bunch of trophies all around the Woodstock location.

Woodstock would be quite a haul from where the OP will be though. There's gotta be some good bbq south of Atlanta.. unfortunately I don't know any sorry. I just don't go that way much. FatMatt's does have good ribs, can't say about their other stuff, never had it. Community Barbecue in Decatur (Dekalb County), has great food. They have this mac and cheese that's to die for. I could go there just for that, seriously. Other than that, there aren't any that just jump out to me and say 'this is the place' which is kind of sad seeing we're in the south.

Good luck though!

btw, I'm eating a delicious pulled pork sandwich right now. The catch is, I made it though!

+1000 ^^^^^^

Bub-Ba-Q is the best BBQ in the greater Atlanta area, hands down, IMO! I ate there twice last week! Try the brisket! I'd put it up against any you'll find in Texas.

Dave Poe's in Marietta and The Rib Ranch in Marietta are two others that get it done, but all of these are a bit of a trek from Stockbridge.

If you eat brisket in Georgia you have missed the point. It is all about the pig.

I've lived here for over 20 years.

We have some of the best bbq in the southeast. But none of it is in Atlanta.

Sorry. Go north. Up 75.

+1 on Freshair BBQ...Jimmy Carter used to have their BBQ flown up to the White House when he was pres. I always stop there on my way down 75.
If you find yourself in E Cobb area, Barbecue One on Roswell Road has GREAT Briskett.

just for the record, Atlanta is not the best place for bbq in the south. Also, as a rule of thumb, if the bbq place has a website, you can do better. The absolute best you will find will be some random shack on the side of the road.

+1 The best pulled pork sandwich I ever had came from a non-descript cinder block shack in Columbus, GA. Couldn't tell you the name...been quite a while.

Yea, I don't know if you ever make it down to Huntsville, but at the priceville exit on I65, there's a bbq shack across from the Raceway that is to die for. It's the best white sauce chicken sandwich I've ever eaten. I can't remember the name, but it's a green building that's probably 20'x20'.

Likewise, in between B'ham and Tuscaloosa there's a place on some random highway called Promised Land. It's a ripoff of Dreamland, but 10x better. You order from one window and pick it up from another and eat at picnic tables. They spelled it "Laynd" on the sign and they morphed the y with the n to correct it.
