I could just be me, but it seems like fanned frets seem to be catching on more and more lately...especially considering what was displayed at the Montreal Guitar Show. I wonder if that has anything to do with Ralph Nowak's patent expiring.....which would be sad for Ralph, since he pioneered the concept. Still nice to see the concept getting more traction though.

As more guitarists - both artists and just players - find an interest in lower tunings and extended range instruments it's natural that this transition has happened. Especially true in for progressive rock/metal people. In the context of the show, I think it's more a piece of flair for builders than it is useful - a lot less necessary on a 6 than a 7 or 8.
BTW, I saw this and couldn't help but think of Michi Matsuda, but I've never seen him do a rosette like this. Is it one of his?

I actually thought there was less fanned fret guitars this year than last. Might have just been my own perception though... Still lots of them and all different approaches. Freakin cool comes to mind!

Doug, I think you need to do a fanned fret spruce top Argonaught for next year. Just sayin. :munch I'll be waiting.
Nice.
Thanks for the slideshow.
Some of the inlay work there was truly eye-popping!

I have this 6 string, fanned fret bass in my head with a very special bolt on neck joint and a second faux fretted neck. Something that could be interchanged with out wrecking the intonation... I'm still working up the details but if I can make it happen I think I'll have to build it.

Great set of pics. What was that black jazz guitar that had the pearl inlay that swooped out into a chrome scratchplate outline? That thing was a beaut! In fact, most of those blinged out jazzers looked pretty freakin' awesome!

If I'm thinking if the same one, it actually had a PG made of like aluminum tubing that flowed into the fretboard inlay. Not the fanciest guitar there but honestly, I think one of my absolute favorites. It was simple, classy, understated and very, very well executed. Its hard to describe why I liked it os much, but I just LOVED it!

I did some digging and found the builder: Christophe Grellier. It looks like the pickguard mounts underneath what I think is chrome plated brass (check his website for the build pics). Fantastic stuff! Love the look of that Benedetti pickup as well. Also, Grellier has created a fretboard calculator that actually creates a tech. drawing of the fretboard. Great resource.

I didn't get a chance to take photos of everyone's table but here are some photos that fill in the gaps a bit.

Very cool guitars. I especially like the design of the Christophe Grellier Kozmic Jazz.
