Gotta replace the current speaker...what are the best suggestions? Yep, a '64....

Thx.

I put a Weber Blue Dog in mine when the original self-destructed. Quite a nice combo, but I'm considering installing an old JBL D120F. Now that's a serious tone recipe.

I've got a Scumback M75 in my '64, the 65 watt version. I went through a lot of speakers in that amp, this is the best fit for me, by far.

Tried that. If you want fat, rich and warm try a TTubby ceramic. If thats not your thing then try the JBL, or the many other suggestions to follow here no doubt,

The Naylor 12 is quite good, a Jensen / Cele mix.

Peeps often say the 12f150, tried that but the Tubby is that and alot more.

The emmi C Rex is often mentioned and havnt tried that, but as that and the Tubby are both hempcone I think I will stick with Tubby and save some time.

Also JBL's can sometimes have some age issues, hard to know what you are getting into with those, recone by who knows who or just a tired old dried out speaker etc etc.

I had Tone Tubbies and Weber 12f150s in my '66 pro reverb too - no comparison: the Tone Tubby was a monster and the Weber was a dog (in comparison).

+1 for the D-120. In a Dr or PR it's tone heaven.

I have a 64 and a 66. The 66 has an EV12s, the 64 had a Jensen c12q. Ive tried quite a few different ones in it, I keep coming back to the C12Q. Right now I have a Celestion Gold in it, and it sounds good, but I'll go back to the Jensen. It really depends on what your looking for. I want it really sparkly, and tight bottom end, and for me the Jensen does that. Its also quite bit louder with the Jensen than the Celestion Gold.

shouldn't this be in "amps and cabs"?

I have a new Jensen neodymium Jet in my '64 non-reverb Deluxe, and love it.
Tried it against a half dozen other premium speakers, including a mint d120,
I preferred the Jensen Jet over everything.

Please forgive if this sounds like heresy here, but when I used a DRRI, I LOVED a broken-in EVM12L in there.

I auditioned most of the speakers listed here in my '66 DR. I stuck with an original vintage '65 Jensen C12NA (not sure what the 'A' represents). This is the only one that satisfies me all the way through clean to break up. I'm surprised it wasn't listed here yet.

I keep my amp set on 4-5 mostly and vary the volume of my Strat via the knob and pick attack. This is the amp I do cleans with the most.

It really depends on what your looking for.

Big White Tele is right , and it should be a prerequisite information for anyone starting or replying to any thread. So many times on these forums neither the original poster nor the repliers are specific enough for the experienced comments to be relevantly useful to the original poster.

Personally I have been using a Weber California 75 watt ceramic speaker with paper dome in my 22 watt 1966 Deluxe Reverb. Very efficient speaker making the DR sound louder and a very good clean tone. I want the amp to stay clean for as loud as possible , and the California accomplishes that.

Question : What characteristics make the Tone Tubby more pleasing than the Weber 12F150 ? The clean tone , the distorted tone ?
Given all of the positive reveiws of the 12F50 in Deluxe Reverbs I had been considering trying the 12F150 for the amp.

I just put a Weber Silver Bell ceramic in my '68 Deluxe and it sounds fantastic - it has some of the glassiness and shimmer of a good Princeton Reverb, but also has that big, defined warm Deluxe tone when you lay into it.
The speaker I was using before - a Celestion Vintage 30 - sounded like there was a blanket thrown over the amp. The Silver Bell has made this amp sing. I haven't gigged with it since the speaker change, but I'm expecting good things.
Funny enough, the Silver Bell was in my Hot Rod Deluxe and while it sounded ok, it really didn't do much for me in that amp. I swapped the Vintage 30 into the Hot Rod Deluxe and I was blown away by the difference. That is the perfect speaker for a HRD, for my ears anyway. It seems to tame the harshness of the HRD, but allows some nice shimmer to come through.
I like a good clean sounding amp, out of which I can wring some sweet, harmonically rich tones - if I want dirt, or overdrive, there's plenty of good pedals that can take you there, but I don't know of any pedals that can fix up a crappy clean sound inherent to an amp/speaker combination. If there is such a pedal, please tell me and maybe I can save some of the time and money I've been spending on speaker swaps...

+1000 on the Tone Tubby. I have the ceramic one in my DRRI and it transformed the amp.
