View Full Version : GSP1101/RP1000: The Recordings Thread

I've received numerous PMs over the last couple months asking me for clips and recorded samples of the GSP1101 in action. I've posted many over the last few years, but they are scattered across the TGP Universe. Here's a compilation of several of my GSP recordings and hope that all other fans of the GSP1101 & RP1000 will add to this so we can all hear the tones GSP users are getting in the real world.

Please use this thread only to post and comment on live and/or studio recordings made with the Digitech GSP1101 or RP1000.

Thanks and rock on!!

Jason

I played all guitar and bass tracks on the following and recorded with the GSP1101:

A Bridge You Can't Unburn (all me but drums: outro solo has some cool harmonies and pretty fat tone I think)
http://soundcloud.com/buddaman71/a-bridge-you-cant-unburn

Let It Rain (country/80's rock power ballad: improvised, 1st take 80's type solo at 2:12)
http://soundcloud.com/buddaman71/let-it-rain

Lost in Love With You (Southern Pop)
http://soundcloud.com/buddaman71/lost-in-love-with-you

I Gotta Find You (Red Dirt Country)

I Can Love You (Southern Pop - All me but drums)

Those clips are awesome, mine is not nearly as good but here goes anyway. Here’s the RP1000 going direct to the mixer at church. The recording was made with a cheap MP3 recorder sitting in the sanctuary. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9063959

Sounds great, especially for DI to mixer and then just ambient recording in the room :)

Here's a cover of Panama that I'm fooling with - it still needs some mixing and EQ work, so it's a little rough around the edges. This was recorded in a dining room, all GSP1101. Also gives you an idea of what doing Van Halen covers sounds like in a female-fronted cover band... :dunno

Nice work! I wouldn't say the tone nailed Eddie's Brown Sound, but I liked it none the less. What amp model/cab did you use?

Thanks! I wasn't aiming completely for Brown Sound, this is more of a quick "yeah, this'll do" patch that I knocked up during a rehearsal one day. :) It ended up sounding really good through our PA, so I never bothered trying to get it closer. It's the JCM800 with the Digi Alt 4x12 cab (I learned that this cab sounds pretty dang good as a global cab from buddaman71 - thanks Jason! :beer ). This patch has the Sparkdrive distortion pedal in there too for a little extra push.

I just took a spin through the clips others have posted, man the GSP1101 can get some great recorded / live sounds. The combination of GSP > Power amp > guitar cab + PA feed direct to PA is hard to beat. Nice!

Here's a couple more that I used the RP1000:

Sunrise - a soft little instrumental I made for my mom. It's all RP1000 on guitars and bass

Penn Station - a simple DADGAD acoustic tune I wrote as a lullaby for my daughter when she was little. Mic blended with pickup DI into RP1000 for comp and verb.

Nice noodles man! I have to know what amp model and what distortion/overdrive you kicked in? That was a superb pedal model whatever it was.Thanks. It's the Redline.

Here's the rundown:

JMP amp with ALT 412 cab sim
Amp gain 75
Bass 6
Mid 8
Treb 6
Amp Lev 40
EQ
Low 5
Mid 4 @640 (set Q to widest)
High 4@8000 (set to widest)
EMT plate reverb bump level up to 40

That's pretty much it. For OD try Redline and set level 99 gain about 30 with low at 60 high at 50.

Anyone got any more? I'd love to hear the GSP in a jazzy blues or fusion-ish context.

I'll try to come up with some. My band just got an absolutely unbelievably gifted bass player (kinda jaco meets flea) and we gonna throw together a little 3-piece jazz/rock riff band.

Clay Sears of the Clay Sears Band (Also on tour with Janet Jackson) uses a GSP1101 rig. http://www.digitech.com/en-US/news/clay-sears-guitarist-for-janet-jackson-and-queen-latifah-relies-on-digitech-pedals-to-craft-his-signature-sounds

I'm not 100% certain he's using his GSP in this clip, but it sounds like it to me. The restaurant he is playing in is in Westmont NJ, about an hour away from me. I'll have to make a point to go there one night when his band is playing and he's not on tour.

The clean tone on this live clip is an admittedly dramatic wet tone, but it's the 65 Twin model. I LOVE the Twin model with just a little verb into my stereo tube power amp and semi-open back 412. It's a gorgeous tone. I'll try to find something drier and more pure Twin like, but here's what I have now. Just a Zoom H2 sitting about 8' out in front of my cab to capture my live tone. Improvised outro solo on my band's version of Keith Urban - Til Summer Comes Around.

I like the lead (2:12) on this country/hair rock ballad. It's a first take off the top of my head and I think if fits the tune pretty well.
JCM900 on the crunch rhythm (I like the tone on the rhythm guitars under the 2nd verse) and the Soldano model on the leads.

I won't have time over the next week or so but can tell you this. The Demeter Fuzzulater and DOD Classic Fuzz models are pretty cool, the others so so. In this area, I think Line 6 does a better job actually. By filter if you mean envelope filter, they've modeled the DOD FX25 to a T (probably most famously used by Flea) and it beats the pants of the Line 6 Tron stuff. One cool thing about Digitech MFX, they (and DOD) actually have a history of some pretty cool pedals/rack units which they include in their MFX.

Thanks for the info Will. I thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone had anything "strange" they were too shy to share. I had the old FX25 in the late 70's. I don't know what I was thinking when I got rid of it. I'm most curious about Auto Ya, Ya Ya (is Digitech Canadian?), Synth Talk or the Step Filter stuff. I've always liked the fact the DOD/Digitech will come up with something and just throw it out on the market to see if anyone makes use of it.

Yes, Vai circa 1995. But I was incorrect that it is the Digitech Ya Ya (though it sounds similar) per the man:

"'It's the guitar going through a vocal filter sound on the Eventide DSP4000 then with my right foot I'm playing the Whammy Pedal that's set to an octave. Then I've got the Wah-wah on my left foot. And then with my right hand I'm pulling notes and vibrating them with the whammy bar - and the whole guitar is tuned down to 'D'. So you add all that together you get that intro. And it looks pretty bizarre too!"

^Excellent playing and recording ^

I find the shift in many TGPers attitudes towards the GSP1101/RP1000 has really changed over the almost 4 years I've been singing it's praises here. Early on, like the AXE, SO many were like, "it's a $499 off the rack digital processor; no way it can sound good." I also have seen a pretty dramatic shift among even AXE owners who were originally "Yea...it's ok, but it's a toy compared to my AXE." to, "man...I love my AXE, but, since they are so affordable, I picked up a GSP as a backup, and I even prefer it to the AXE for some things. It absolutely holds it's own, ESPECIALLY since it's 1/5th the price!"

Many actually LISTEN to the sounds and quality of the pure tones and effects in context of a live performance and/or recording and now say, "wow...that thing sounds quite good and absolutely AMAZING for an off the shelf $499 device." (Disclaimer: I LOVE the AXE and it's one of the greatest all-time devices of its kind)

My band's new world-class bass player has toured with some top bands all over the US for years, and the first thing he said the first gig we played was, "holy crap! your guitar tone is incredible!"

That's good enough for me.

I didn't quote all the YT links to save space but they sounded great, care to share settings?

Sure, thanks for asking.

IIRC just about all of those were the 77 Master Volume model. Bass around 7-8, mids around 8-10, treble around 5-9 (depending on patch). The Digitech chorus is in there along with a tape delay and a tiny bit of hall reverb. Gain on the amp models are around 90-99. Leads are boosted with the TS808.
The Limelight solo has a triggered phaser in it and the Spirit of Radio intro has the EH flanger.
The speaker sim is the Digitech speaker compensation. The direct line is taken off a pair of Behringer G100 DI's with their speaker sims on.
Since then I've ditched the 4x12 and I'm running a pair of passive FRFR cabs (12" and a horn) and using Redwirez cabinet IR's.

I could give you specific settings later cause right now my gear is packed in the car. I have an audition tonight in a couple hours.

Man, you guys are making me want to buy another GSP again!

I'm not the best tweaker, and I got frustrated and simplified my setup, but I must say, I do miss the functionality of the Control 2, it has everything I need at my feet, plus, I like the battery life of my Sennheiser G2 rackmounted wireless more than my Line 6 G30, so, maybe it's time to build a small rack again, haha!

I never did experiment with IR's, or some of the tones you guys are posting, especially that one on page one with the '77 model and redline box. If I got that tone before, I don't know if I would have gotten rid of it!

Baba/MJ,

I just emailed you my GSP file. If I remember correctly, the intro/signature lead is the Mesa .22, the crunch rhythm is JCM900 and the lead is the Orange O-120.
I think it sounds pretty fat for a DI to the mixer live recording.

thanks for watching :)

No, thank YOU my man. I should be getting my 2nd GSP tonight, and I'm a very bad tweaker, so, any help/settings I can get will definitely help.

I really want this thing to work this time, because the form factor and functionality of it and the C2, is EXACTLY what I want right now.

If anyone else would like to post/email their "direct to board" settings for medium rock tones, solo tones, and clean tones, I'd gladly check them out and it would be much appreciated.

Just in general, my main amp models/FX are:

65 Twin for lush cleans
62 AC15 - KILLER punchy edgy clean
77 Master - brown crunch
JCM900 - heavier crunch
.22 caliber - mid gain lush leads
O-120 & soldano - hi-gain leads

I don't really play heavy rock anymore, but when I playing around the Randall and 5150 models are pretty fly.

I use the hall verb with the brightness usually at 80+ almost all the time and just adjust the decay accordingly

I use the ping-pong and mod delay the most and tend to use longer delay times than many, as I feel that keeps the delays from muddying up the notes as much. I usually tap 1.5 quarter notes based upon the song, but it's more of a feel thing for me.

I use the ALT412 cab sim as global sim on all presets, ONLY on the XLR outs and no sims on the 1/4" outs to my powr amp/cab.

Works for me. :)

Man, you guys are really getting some great tones out of these things. I was hoping to go this route many years ago. I have A GNX3. It just didn't work for me live, so I mainly use it to practice. I can get some decent tones, but the GSP/RP's sound so much better. The MP3 input jack on mine is going out so I was thinking of getting the RP500 to replace it. It has all the features I need and from what I hear on this thread, the models sound awesome. I've been a big fan of digitech for a long time and was trying to decide what to go with. The other manufacturers are also putting out some pretty good stuff as well. Fortunately, now the modeling is getting very good. Thanks for all the contributers. It has definately helped me make up my mind.

Thanks so much brother, I already set the ALT412 as a global, and even when I had my old one, I agree, that 77 Master Volume just freaking works.

Thanks Buddaman. Currently I'm using/auditioning too many amps and it gets a bit overwhelming. I hope that I will settle on just a few pretty soon. The ones in your list except JCM900, I use JCM800, are all part of my setup so far and working well. That 5150 is a lot of fun. Unfortunately I don't see a place for it in either of my bands currently.

Thanks Ibanez270. While I do use the 77 a lot this was done with the AC15 in the left channel and the Mesa 22 Caliber in the right. I read that guitarist Brian May used AC30 but I don't care for the gsp model so I looked for some that had a nice meaty midrange character to them. The original recording sounds to me like he recorded two separate but same parts for the left and right channel so thats what I did. I wanted to just copy the first track but it just didn't sound right to me. The solo has a tube screamer and a little flange.

So my group the Will Chen Trio (http://www.reverbnation.com/willchentrio) is working on our first EP. Given our shoestring budget and the fact that I've got a 5 and <1 year old, most the guitar tracking is being done late at night direct. This is a rough mix of our tune The Day After Yesterday. The guitar track is my PRS SE Singlecut into the Digitech Spank model on the RP500 using either the Alt 4X12 or Chunk4X12, can't remember. I kick in the Digi Comp for a slight boost during the middle solo section. Now, there's been significant post production (EQ, delay, compression, reverb) but the core tone is still the Digitech RP500.

I need some suggestions on getting a decent clean country pickin tone like Brad Paisley. I'm covering one of his tunes and have not found a satisfactory amp. Tried the Twin but playing clean with some aggression it sounds kind of shrill to me. If I roll off some of the highs it looses the crispness I want. I don't expect to sound like him, let alone play like him, but I'd like to get closer. I've been playing modern country less than a year so please feel free to school me.

I think Paisely's tone is actually dirtier than you might think. I look to the Digitech Spank for my first clean amp choice. With lower output pups I also really like the Tweedface model. I typically boost around 300hz with the mid band of the para eq and also roll back the highs a touch around 3K. Also, the Digicomp is your friend...embrace her!

Here's a demo of a new song I'm working on. Very rough mix balance wise. all the tones were generated with the RP500 though reverb was added in post. Guitar was an SX SST57 w Rose Mariposa pickups (neck pickup used throughout). The RP500 patch is a Digicomp boost Matchless HC30, during the middle solo a TS model was engaged. In answer to the above post, this might be a good starting point for emulating Paisley's tone, though not what I'm going for stylistically with the track.

I gotta say, when designing sounds for my demos and the EP I'm working on I find myself turning to the RP far more often than the Line 6 HD500. I always give both units a shot, but its just easier to work with the RP and seems to nail some of tones I go for without excessive tweaking.

Here's a somewhat dirty-but-passable live recording from last night captured on my lil Zoom H2. It was just stuck on a mic stand and aimed at the general location of the stage, so not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. New red dirt rock original called, "Sleep Alone Tonight" (yes the input was a little overdriven on the recorder...nothing I could do about it, but I think the guitar sounds ok. It's MUCH warmer and fatter sounding in my car and in earbuds than on my tinny PC speakers )

Nice stuff as usual buddaman. Have you tried any IR cabinets since updated to c63? If so what are you using?

I upgraded to c63 for a couple days, but ended up reloading c48, as I didn't like all the extra panning and wet/dry settings that defaulted to all dry on one side and all wet on the other. I just didn't need any of the new features, so I just re-installed c48 and it's back to the way I'm used to it.

I don't really ever have mine near a PC and have mine dialed in where I like it for our system, so I didn't go to the trouble or experimentation of loading in IRs. It's a VERY cool feature for those who keep it in the studio and can quickly and easily experiment with different tones. I'm more about gig-to-gig consistency since mine is used live 99% of the time.

The rig is GSP1101/C2 w/ Redwirez IR's. The XLR's ran straight to the PA and the stage sound is the GSP 1/4" outs to an Art SLA-1 and a pair of Seismic Audio full rage cabs (12" spkr and horn). The audio here is what was coming out of the PA and picked up by the camera mic.
The amp model is the Randall RG100 (not my usual type of tone) and I do kick the harmonizer in and out a few times.

Oh, almost forgot to add:
The flexibility and versatility of the GSP is amazing. Since I just run mono and send the left XLR to the PA, it frees up the right XLR. I used that for a small powered monitor for the drummer. He could then set the monitor volume right where he needed it.

Very nice Pete. Thanks for posting. What a great idea I never thought about sending a feed from the right side to a powered monitor. The bass player on the other side of the stage has trouble hearing me sometimes and that would fix that.

Is the camera man a friend of yours or a guitar player?

Re-listening to buddaman's stuff, nice as always, and hearing your performance has all but sealed the fate of a new head I bought and have been demoing. Been trying to justify it and figure how to work it in but knew in the back of my mind I didn't need it. I've already got a nice tube amp so it will probably go back. Never thought I'd warm up to amp modeling but it makes my performances so much easier and consistant.

Here's one I did a long time ago. I kinda forgot I did it and found it on my computer last week.

It's a rough take of Gary Moore's version of 'The Messiah Will Come Again'.
I did this as a tone and recording test of the GSP1101 shortly after I got it.
I can't recall which amp model it is (I know it's one of the Marshalls) but I seem to recall using the Boss Metal Zone distortion sim. I also know I had the levels too damn high. :)
I do recall that the guitar was an Edwards Les Paul goldtop with Gibson 57 Classics.

I guess I'll start getting into this game, since my band has been recording our live shows as of late. Here's just the solo to "Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC. I know, I know, I usually play it MUCH closer to the original, I was just feeling a little adventurous, which explains why it doesn't flow as well as it could.

It's the JCM800 model with the SD overdrive box goosing it, and some digital delay.

Guys,

Just wanted to echo what several people have already said - some great stuff here. I read through the original GSP1101 thread a few times and listened to what was posted in this thread before recently trading "down" from an Axe-Fx to a GSP. buddaman's stuff along with fellow Rush fans _pete_ and Baba convinced me that the GSP is a giggable unit. I'm really enjoying it so far. Not to mention all 3 of you guys can really play and have been helpful in this forum and elsewhere. Thanks to you and everyone else for sharing. :beer

I've had a couple of beers so I'm ready to throw my hat in the ring too ;). I just recorded myself playing along with a backing track of Rush's Limelight. There's a few notes I'd like to take back (and maybe I shoulda tuned that B string), but overall I like the way it sounds and it should give anyone interested another sample of GSP goodness. The clean patch uses the Jazz 120. The dirt patches use the 2101 Sat Tube amp with the DIGISPKR cab - one of my favorite combinations in the GSP.

Here's a couple from a Xmas show I did.

It's one of the ones in the free pack. The Marshall 1960A/Celestion G12M mic'd with a Shure SM7.

Thanks man.

Honestly for the TSO stuff I had a patch using the 5150 that sounded better by itself but tended to disappear in the mix a little. The RG-100 sounded brighter and a little "fizzier" but it sat in the mix better.
I've built some other presets for that stuff using the triple rec that sound much better but I have to yet to try them in a band context.

For me I like a more "classic rock" tone and have been messing a lot with the GSP's Orange amp sim. I'm loving that one.

You still have your Axe FX, right?

I don't have it anymore Pete. I sold it and went back to amplifiers...
There was something just a bit more visceral about the amps sound to me playing live.... I have really been thinking about the AxeII but hate to drop $2600 on it.... It is a LOT of kit for that money, but so is the GSP... I did have an RP1000 that was killin' but it malfunctioned and I had to send it back.

Hello guys, great examples of playing by you all!

I was wondering if someone, anyone here could give me a tutorial on how to upload and use these Redwire IR's?

I am a complete novice knucklehead when it comes to this kind of thing! I've had the GSP1101 for about a year now, and while I think it's pretty cool as is, I keep hearing about how greatly these 3rd party IR's improve the tone...I mean, what do I need to have, and how do you intstall it to get going?!

I see that there's a "free" cab available from Redwires, should I start with that?

By the way, that's some marvelous playing & tone there Pete!

Thanks gentlemen!

The easiest way to upload IRs is the G.I.R.L. utility that was written by a member here.
This thread on the Mustbebeta forum explains it all and has the links to download it.

Your computer is paranoid! ;) G.I.R.L. is a great program and seems safe to me. I've never had an issue with it.

You could always use the Mustbebeta cab uploader (this is for firmware C59-C63):

Very nice TFC. That is such a fun song to play and I think your tones and effect usage is great on that song. What amp and effects are you using?

I always wanted to perform the entire 2112 but where I play I don't think many people would stick around to listen to it.

TFC

Thanks very much, MJ. It was great to finally play that song live after wanting to do it for about 25 years. I'm happy with the way it turned out. I use the Mark IV amp with the Vintage 4x12 cab. FX were detune (-12) for the chorus sound, Tape Delay, Lex Ambient Reverb and Screamer for the distortion during a couple of parts in the leads. The quiet part of the first lead is just the neck pickup with the volume rolled way down. That's actually my favorite sound from that recording, go figure. For Alex Lifeson's older chorus sounds, I really like the detune, more so than any of the chorus FX.

I hear you about people sticking around for all of 2112. But from my experience in a Rush tribute (exactly 1 gig) the best response we got was probably from the 2 longest songs - La Villa and Natural Science. Rush fans are good that way ;).

The GSP does a killer job at the Rush tones, doesn't it? I use the '77 Master Volume model quite a bit in my trib band. I never tried the MK IV but I like what you got from it.

I can't recall if I posted this one here or not so I'll toss it out again. It sounds like we have our GSP's set about the same. Our tones are nearly identical.

RP1000 is an incredibly versatile device with I/O, tone and useful features still superior to pretty much everything else in its category IMHO. I use it for my acoustic shows too, as the looper is instantly available and easy to use and the effects are excellent.

Anyone here still using an rp1000?Best value for my dollar I've ever spent on any music equipment by far! Rock solid durability, 10-presets available at any time (a dream come true), decent preamp modeling, above-average effects, average cab modeling, and combining the acoustic models with my ghost-bridge has given me the best live acoustic sounds I've ever had. I run direct and use an EV-ELX112p for monitoring (or to carry the room if needed). Compared to anything else on the market in a similar price range, it is the best solution for me in my modern top 40 cover band.

Same DSP (AudioDNA2... All the current "RP" models use this chip, as does the IPB-10), but the GSP has two processors. The 2nd chip is used to preserve reverb and delay tails (Digitech calls it "seamless time") when switching patches. I believe the 2nd DSP may also be utilized for the user cabinet IRs in the MustBeBeta firmware.

Made a few new clips. Guitar used is my PRS Dave Navarro model loaded with Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz set. All using the Digi ALT412 cab sim. Direct in, with USB cable, recorded with Reaper.

First up, my main dirt tone, the '77 Master Volume model. It starts with coil tap activated on the neck pickup, then both pickups, then bridge pickup. At 1:20 I add some chorus and delay. After that, (about 1:50) I switch to full bridge humbucker:

http://soundcloud.com/guitarbaba/77-master-volume-tone-clip

Second is my "dirtIER" tone :D, JCM800. I add delay at about 1:40 in. This one is a bit long, you get the idea within 2 minutes:

http://soundcloud.com/guitarbaba/jcm800-tone-clip

Third, this is pretty much the same tone, it's my lead tone, so it has delay, but I have the SD distortion on this preset. I just hit record and played whatever came to me.
