Hey guys !
I intend to work some tracks of Meshuggah these days.
They play on 8 strings guitars tuned F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb.
And I can't really buy me a guitar for this right now...
So I was thinking 'bout getting a Boss Pitch Shifter or something like that. But, I fear that it would sound too synthetic or muddled.
Any views on this issue ?
The best pitch shifter I have used is the Morpheus Droptune. If you're not retuning then I guess you would be dropping down almost an octave (e.g, E -> F, A -> Bb, D -> E ...). As good as the Droptune sounds when going down a few tones, I don't know of too many pedals that get you down almost a full octave and still sound good. I don't think you'll be happy with the results.

Never heard a pitch shifter that tracked well enough to actually sound like your guitar is tuned differently. Haven't heard the Morpheus but I heard it didn't track any better than the Whammy either. This was what I frequently read when searching threads on it when I was considering buying one. Might be your best bet, though. Not sure if the Pitchfactor would work, but it's super expensive. Strymon should really make a be all, end all pitch shifter.

What kind of setup will you be using to get your distortion tone for Meshuggah tones? A POD, like they use? Or a Vetta or AxeFX? Or are you gonna use a tube amp, either a high gain one or one with pedals? just curious.

Roland VG-99. It's expensive though.

In general, their riffs don't use more than one note at a time (there are a few exception, but not this often). I think I'm going to wait, work their tracks with my standard gear and later (really later...), I'll buy a low guitar ! A baritone one, but way lower !
I had a simple Harmonist in my ME50, but it wasn't that good. I've seen a guy on Youtube who plays a Meshuggah's song with a Shifter of a Zoom Multi-FX, but I won't buy anything else that a 'little' pedal for this.

Don't really know. My usual gear (tube amp + Bad Cat 2-Tone, if I can get one in september !). It's not really in order to 'sound like them', just to work the tracks. But if it needs an expensive gear for that, I'll just play it an 8ve higher. Too bad.
But you tell me that the Pod could give a huge sound like theirs ? I'm curious about it, 'cos I have one home, used in a Direct way, and I don't really manage to get a real enormous sound ... Maybe a matter of settings I don't find ?

A cheaper and more versatile alternative is to have the EHX ring thing. To me it tracks well, and you are able to set different tunings to the 9 preset (along with other modulation effects), but you will notice the tone changes, not super obvious when it's distorted though.

Yeah, it would not be very precise. And I don't really like Ring Mod ... But thanks, for the proposition !

I've never tried to get similar tones with a POD but I know that's how they get those tones on their records. Pretty amazing that it's digital really. That's how Bulb/Periphery got his tones for a long time too, but I think he uses AxeFX now. The killer metal recording tones are in there, but I'm not sure how you get them.
