Back in the early 80s (when MTV was new and actually played music videos), there was a series called basement tapes. Unsigned bands from all around the country would submit videos of themselves and the viewers would vote; w/ the winner scoring a recording contract. I loved the concept and I believe Rail was the first winner. (not sure how many seasons it actually went). I actually bought this album "Arrival" as I dug this tune.

Yeah I remember the basement tapes and Rail. I was glad they won because they were doing the bar circuit here in Montana. I saw then open for Van Halen during the "Women and Children first" tour in Great Falls MT. I also had Arrival album. Unfortunately as soon as a major label got ahold of them they ruined there sound and they didn't make it big. They were a great band though.

OMG. I thought 70s fashions were bad. I stand corrected. But yes, I do remember Basement Tapes (and Closet Classics :-), and when MTV was MUSIC television.

Yup, that Trak video has lots of what made the 80s...... er,.. great? Yes, kids. We wore crap like that and always had a Goody comb in the back pocket to feather the hair... when we still had hair.
Here's a Basement tape runner up:

Man, I forgot all about this one!! An old bandmate of mine used to have one of those ugly Guild guitars like in the video. Even Guild jumped on the pointy guitar bandwagon back in the day!

I remember them well....The Sharks from Lancaster, PA won the first year IIRC..."On My Own" was the song. My ex wife and I followed them around the Reading area for a few years. Sorta eastern PA's version of INXS.

Wrong Rail won the first basement tapes contest in 1983 . The sharks won in 86.
