how "new" or "current" is this?

yes, it is odd to see the whammy, wonder what he uses it for.....
funny thing, most of the effects are stuff he's used forever...hasn't really changed much in 30 some yrs....

Within the past couple weeks, the pic was taken. Definitely new. As far as I know, Ed's never used a Digitech Whammy up until now.

Whammy for detune? instead of a rack unit?

But still using the rack delays. I would guess it is another Friedman build as he usually does EVH's stuff and often uses the G-Lab power supply lately.

I didn't save the pic but I saw it. Maybe they took it down. It was a true bypass loop switcher (with EVH logo) with buttons for phase, flange, octave?, whammy, digital delays (not pictured), Cathedral delay (not pictured). An EVH sig wah before all of that and a G-Lab power supply on a pedalboard. The four button footswitch for his amp sat above the true bypass loop. The custom cable looms were on the board too.

It was pretty simple. I think his rigs have been fairly straightforward the last ten years.

If I'm not mistaken, there's an interview at the VHND with the engineer who built two of these rigs for Eddie to use in the upcoming shows/tour.

Without You's intro was a done with a quarter used in a pick scraping motion. No Whammy pedal.

Back in '98 I spent many a second trying to mimic that sound with a coin (couldn't use a quarter specifically as we didn't have those where I grew up), and couldn't get close. I know EVH said that's how he did it, but there's no way he's not stomping on a whammy pedal as well. You can clearly hear the octave leaps.

He did use a '58 Korina V (pictured on a Guitar World magazine cover) for Hot for Teacher. The rigs are probably built by Dave Friedman of Rack Systems who has done his rigs for some time now.

As for "being sick of the Floyd Rose" as an excuse for the Whammy-doubtful-the FR is simple to use and stays in tune with minimal problems if it is set up right. I love my Floyds.

Ed is definitely NOT using a Whammy on "Without You". He was using a coin. After I first heard that tune I tried to play it with a metal pick that I have, and I nailed it instantly. It really was VERY EASY to do...it was nothing special, and it was NOT a Whammy. Those "octave leaps" are where his pick is scraping up high on the e string close to the pickups

See for yourself here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxd8v1mjlmk

You can see in this video HOW he played it at the 0:09 mark (and he is not using his pedalboard), since his pedalboard is in front of his mic stand, and he is NOT standing at it....then at the 0:25 second mark he walks over to his pedalbard to play the wha...

I bet the inclusion of the Whammy on his pedalboard is for a new tune. I'm curious as hell to hear what Ed does with it

Sorry bro, but your mistaken. Ed used a wah wah on the solo of "One I Want", not a Whammy. Go back and listen to the song again...there is no Whammy on there.

Eddie NEVER used a Whammy pedal. It has GOT to be for a new tune for the new album that we have not heard yet!

And Matt Bruck played the talkbox effect (think "Peter Frampton") for Ed on the solo to "Cant Get This Stuff No More" from the 'Best Of' cd with DLR.

I'm not trying to be an ass by pointing these things out guys, but people need to get their facts straight before posting incorrect information.:bonk

What do you use?

In the studio - I just use one amp, one cabinet, and two 57 mikes on the cabinet - one straight in, and one angled in from the side - and dump a lot of bottom end on it, cause 57's will generally be pretty high-mid-rangey sounding mikes, just add bottom, and low mid, and that's it... And I use a harmonizer and an EMS delay. And for "Dirty Water Dog" I used a prototype Peavey single coil Strat-type guitar, direct into the board through an MXR DynaComp, and a Whammy pedal or something like that, just to get a little chorus sound happening - and that's about it. And on "Fire In The Hole" I used a prototype Peavey guitar with a Steinberger TransTrem in it... On "Once" I used a prototype double-neck - I don't think this one will be for sale, it's just for me to be able to pull it off live - it's a six-string guitar with a Fernandez Sustainer in it on the bottom, and a six-string bass on the top. That's cause I did the solo on a six-string bass.

sorry Mikefront.....FACE

the whammy pedal sounds best bending the pitch up an octave or two. eddie's guitars are set to dive only right? maybe that's what he's using the whammy for.

His pedal board looks a lot like the way I used to have mine.

Except on the right where he has those two whammys/wahs or expression pedals I had a Klon Centaur and an old Vox wah, and where he has his Bradshaw switches I had a MidiBuddy.

Apparently David Gilmour didn't get the memo either despite his gorgeous tones using the Whammy on Marooned from Division Bell nor did Tom Morello or Jimmy Page who used it for some modern day theremin style work during the live Page/Plant shows of the mid to late 90's. Personally the Whammy is another expressive tool and I along with the aforementioned greats who have used it don't really care much about the cognoscenti's thoughts toward it!

sorry Mikefont.....FACE

LOL.....I stand corrected!

Using the Whammy for the detune/chorus type sound definitely threw me off there. When I think of a Whammy pedal, I usually think of using it with those wild +1 or +2 octave bends. Leave it to Ed to actually use a Whammy pedal with a more subtle effect than what most others use it for!

I still think that he is including it for a new song though....OR maybe he is just using it for the chorus type effect????

Either way, they need to release the new album already!!!!!!!!

David Glimour's use of the Whammy on "The Blue" (from On an Island) was one of the first times I've heard it used so melodically and musically.

I almost went out and bought one (again) before forcing myself to remember how, personally, I can't make it sound melodic or musical. There's a reason these guys are masters....

Last tour he switched between the original WH-1 and an MXR chorus for the chorus/detune on Pretty Woman.

There is a youtube video floating around of the 2007/8 tour where he used the +1 or +2 octave up function though. I'd love to hear Ed's take on making the octave up feature musical in a song, so yes, bring on the album already!

Edit: Here's the video, starting at 5:06 where you hear Ed use the octave up feature...
