Check out the Dickie Betts Tribute SG at Wildwood. Same idea as the 2008 tribute Johnny Winter Firebird. $6999. What do you think?
Dwayne Allman played Betts' SG for slide later on, most notably at the Central Park show.

If I wanted one, I'd just buy a 61 RI for about 1/3 of the price and make it my own Dickey Betts tribute model.

Very cool looking SG! I love it! No money to purchase one, but I sure like looking at it! :drool

At the same time think about the resale value of the signed Betts down the road. His signature '57 LP sells for way more than they did new....when you can find one for sale. These guitars are more for the collectors than players mostly.

Did they have a "Dickie Betts neck shape" in 1961? Absurd amount of money for another '61 reissue...

Truly retarded pricing. Who is buying this stuff?
whatever works for ya.... but that doesn't work for me!
I hope DB gets some $$ but it's unlikely.

The fact that Duane made this guitar famous just makes this an asinine money grab on behalf of Gibson and DB.

Like the Johnny Winter Firebird, the Betts SG is mostly going to be bought by collectors. I was at Wildwood last Friday and owner Steve was telling me how business is booming. The $4,000-$7,000 Wildwood LPs are selling fast, as seems everything else at Wildwood.
I predict brisk sales for the Betts SG, though I won't be one of them buying it. This and the JW Firebird do feel nice when playing--like a Masterbuilt Fender Custom Shop Relic, except in my view the flaw of the JW Firebird were the Gibson minihumbuckers.
:facepalm
Thats a lot of money, and I like Dickey.

I would buy an original for the money.

its not a money grab by Dickey, he's freakin' rich...all the royalties he gets every year for Ramblin' Man & Jessica must be great. Besides, if you numb skulls didn't get the memo, Duane died almost 40 years ago so he's not really available to sign it. Maybe we can let the guy who bought it, played it on the ABB s/t, Idlewild South and at the Atlanta Pop Fest sign it?

a) I don't think he is that rich.
b) when people think of dickie they think of the goldie, just seems like a they are grasping at anything to entice fools.
When is the Bob Weir signed ES-335 gonna come out? Come on Gibson, he played one for 3 years!!!

if the cost of this guitar is any indicator dickey's signature is now worth about $5k.

i think these things a clearly aimed at collectors. i think that in itself is just going to rub players the wrong way because you have an instrument that's not really intended to be played and also an instrument that's really only intended to make money. i kind of hate that this stuff is even sold in music stores. i think they should be sold in furniture stores or something.
i also just can't stand gibson's pricing. i think there are many better made instruments made by companies that don't do half the volume of gibson, yet they can still sell their instruments for less and still be profitable. but that's just my opinion. clearly gibson moves a lot of stuff even at their unjustifiable prices so i guess most people don't care.

They will sell them all. Wealthy boomers love this kind of stuff. As for the 4K to 7K Les Pauls most of them will never see a gig and hang out at home. This is fine with me. If I was wealthy I would be buying lots of guitars and amps. Some people just like guitars.

i think some of you have nailed it: it's not an instrument meant to make music. it's a conversation piece, a collector's item, a novelty. nothing of any significance will be written or played on these guitars. they will escalate in value, paving the way for the next wave of tribute guitars.
i bet most of the people who buy this wouldn't notice if it wouldn't stay in tune. :dunno

They might escalate in value initially, I doubt it will be long term. I am 40 and a huge ABB fan, I don't see after my lifetime anyone caring about anything Dickey Betts and for that reason as a long term investment I would say it is a poor choice, a real vintage instrument will always be a better investment. When the hipsters grow up, they aren't going to give a damn about obtaining these instruments, its all babyboomers wasting their money which I suppose is their prerogative.

I guess in this case SG refers to Silly Guitar or Silly Guy who bought it.

Somehow, I think this cancels out those three years...

In my opinion, Gibson continues to go off the deep end with ridiculous prices for certain guitars. I owned three Les Paul Standards in the past, but I am no longer a fan.

For that price I'd by a real vintage one and still have money left over for a nice Tele, but whatever floats your boat.

At the rate the Gibson Custom Shop is going to recreate every Gibson guitar owned by anyone with a name and charge the going Vintage rate.

Guitars of this nature are being sold as collector's items and as investments to wealthy boomers. I doubt many of them ever get played.

I own a 62 SG LES PAUL.My friend just purchased a NON-SIGNATURE DB and we compared them and it sounded and felt great! The Pick-ups and nylon saddles made a huge differance. I would play this Gtr in a heartbeat.

I also bought one of the non-signature Dickey Betts B2B VOS models, and I have to agree, it plays and sounds like a dream. It really had nothing to do with the fact that it was a Dickey Betts model or any of that stuff. I'm not a collector or a rich baby boomer lawyer, I just spent enough time playing enough SGs and LPs, both Gibson USA (crap, overall) and Gibson Custom Shop, to realize that this was the best playing one I came across. One of my friends has a '62 SG as well, and another has a '74 and this one plays and sounds as good or better than both of them. I could have gone vintage and searched another year for the perfect one...and paid more. Btw, I didn't pay anything CLOSE to 7k or even 4k. In the end, it doesn't matter: I worked my ass off for the money to buy the guitar I was looking for and that grabbed me and sang to me. Simple as that. I'll leave the signature and namesake and price tag arguments to everyone else.

Actually, during the beautiful All Gibson Dead, Bob played a 335. Check Festival Express: Garcia, Weir, and Lesh all G'd up.
He takes a good bit of jokes but check out TRI Studios, many great clips in the archive. Weir is doing lots of interesting things now.
Great Other One with Kimock on the archives there.
