The Happy Days episode with Fonz's water ski stunt is on right as I speak.

This was one of the comments on a Youtube posting of that clip:
What they SHOULD have done is had the Fonz break through the ramp and spill into the shark circle, where then huge boiling splashes would come out of the water indicating the struggle underneath as everyone is in a panic wondering what's happening under the water, then suddenly the water goes still....then "HEEEYYYY" The Fonz emerges from the water wearing a custom-fit shark-leather jacket, as he says "he messed up my hair" and whips out his comb.

And to add, "jumping the shark" has come to mean the pivotal moment when an otherwise great/popular TV show does something stupid that is considered the moment where the show begins its (usually speedy) decline.
Some great sites on it with many differing opinions.
Often, it's the addition of a new cast member or a departure of another, a change in format, etc. that totally ruins the show.

Funny thing is Fonzie jumped the shark in Season 5, in a 3 parter that comprised the first 3 episodes of that season. The show lasted 11 seasons. So when he jumped the shark, the show hadn't even reached it's half-way point. It had reached the end of its 4th season and was only beginning the 5th. It had 7 more seasons ahead of it! The very antithesis of a show declining. :-)

Not sure which is sadder. The fact that Happy Days got to the point of Fonzie jumping the shark..
Or that you, all these years later, are sitting watching it.;)
By the way, Henry Winkler had a GREAT part in a King of the Hill episode ("A Rover Runs Through It") where Peggy's family was losing their cattle ranch in Montana, because Henry Winkler bought the adjacent property and wouldn't let them use the cattle road they had traditionally used to drive their cattle to the high country for grazing. (Sorry, I am a complete KOTH junkie...own every episode and watch multiple times a day...EVERY day.)

The Fonz never actually combs his hair. ;)

I always thought 'American Graffiti' jumped the shark when it devolved into 'Happy Days'.

I always thought 'American Graffiti' jumped the shark when it tried to become 'Happy Days'.
Um...American Graffiti (assuming you mean the George Lucas film of the same name) came BEFORE Happy Days.

I know, that's what my vague joke referred to. The movie was great, the TV show was a typical imitation.

I thought it might be something along those lines, but...as often is the case with the written word, it was hard for me to be sure.:)
