View Full Version : Funky Ukulele !
Hi Everyone,
I just got this Ukulelle. Leilani Ukulele, is really popular in Japan right now.
This ukulele got two pickups inside and there is tiny adjustable control inside of
sound hall(each pickup). Played through my Pro Reverb with
Eminence's Red White & Blues.
I don't know how to play the Ukulele. But I just played it like a guitar.
There are a lot of clams, but I thought it sounds funny.
Hope you like my funky ukulele.
Thank you listening!

Wow, that is really cool. I must have lived in a cave all my life because I never knew a ukulele could sound like that. Its amazing to hear your personality as a player come through on such an instrument.

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for listening.
Did you like other clips?
Now I am trying to play some standards.
Transposing...... Now I see how much I rely
on position and chord shapes. Ukulele playing
taught me more about guitar.

Wow! Great looking stuff?
How do you tune that?
Ukulele is tuned G C E A.
That's why I play like guitar's top 1234
strings. Since I play this Ukulele, I learned
more about my guitar.

I didn't know either about ukulele 's possibility.
Herb Ohta who lives in Hawai. He is monster player
,chord melody, jazz standards, some classical tunes.
I have been watching his videos. But I am busy guy
so I deside to play ukulele just like my guitar.
Those clips, I just play by feel. That was all.
Thank you for listening.

Is that normal tuning for a Uke? The top string should be the highest tuned right?
Not your typical Uke playing indeed! :AOK I liked it.

I don't know what is normal tuning for a Uke.
This is a tenor uke. Yes, top string is the highest.
Way I look at this ...is giitar without bottom 2 strings.
Thank you for listening.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for your kind words. I was listening my live tape
last night. I hated my rhythm sometime...
You made me feel better. Thank you.
To me , Ukelele is a guitar with just top 4 strings,
which to think easy? I am learning this.

Great stuff, really fantastic. My buddy/teacher went on a Uke tangent in the past two years and really opened my eyes/ears. Tomo just explodes on this stuff. No hiding with a Uke, you can play or you can't and no way to disguise it.
Well done.

Hi Derek,
Thank you so much for yout time checking
out! I am working on my upcoming cd...
there are many funky tunes and some solo
guitar tunes... Uke too.
I saw Jake at NAMM 2005. He is very very
popular like rock star in Japan. Many TV/CM
using his tunes. Thank you for sharing that
video clip. He is awesome! I admire someone
who can play just ONE instrument to express
music.
I didn't know about James. I will check his
website later. I will let know about these
guys to my Japanese fans. Ukulele is very
very popular insrtument in Japan.
Thank you so much!
PS, Do you play Uke yourself?
You should post Jake's video clip with new
thread. That way more people can watch it!
Do you know Oota-san?
The Legendary Ukulele player from Hawaii.
He does amazing solo ukulele styles. Jake's
influence.

hi tomo,
i dont play ukulele, however i find the instrument and what people can do with it amazing. similar to the mandolin used in bluegrass, but i have never seen anyone play the uke like that!!! and i love george harrison too extremely heartfelt songwriter and lead player.
i have never heard of oota-san, i will have to look him up.
i do play guitar, i am trying to learn different ways to play rhythm after all these years of playing lead..... i know it is strange i am backwards!!!! i love your walking bass and have that very high on my learn list. i have a joe pass tape and brian setzer tape that shows some tricks that are insane!!! :)

Sorry for super late reply. Thank you for writing.
Good luck with your rhythm guitar searching.
Definitely I am into more rhythm guitar playing
than single note stuff. It's really deep and fun.
Do you have Joe Pass's "Two for the road"
with Herb Ellis? Please check it out.
"Cherokee" great song. Danny Gottion did
great version too.

Tomo,
Funky is the word! I enjoyed it! :aok
If you don't mind, I'd like to share some of the ukulele that inspires me. On the Bari 'Ukulele is (Don Ho's musical director till the day he died) Benny Chong. On the Bass, is the director of the college of music at the U of Hawai'i, Byron Yasui, who is an AMAZING 'Ukulele player as well. I've been invited to lunch with them on occasion and it's a gas! They passed an ukulele around the table between eating Cold Ginger Chicken and Roast Duck!
Anyhow, I just wanted to share my excitement with you!
