OK. My task is to come up with a gift for a 30 something guitar playing frontman who was a deep appreciation for rock and rock history. He is melodic and textural with great lyrics rather than shredilicious. Could also be documentary style DVD on a great band.
KR's book was a hit and looking for something with similar insights written by a legendary performer or band or manager. Sammy's book wouldn't quite do it, although I enjoyed it.
Any ideas?

Clapton--although I found it a tedious read.
Documentary DVD--it's not rock but it is very interesting--"Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". I consider it a must-see for all musicians.

I just finished Ozzy's book and thought it was great. I'd read KR's and Sammy's books right before that. I enjoyed them all.

The Keef-enhanced Chuck Berry DVD is great.
The Tom Dowd DVD is great.
TP's "Runnin' Down A Dream" DVD is friggin' epic, the most comprehensive documentary of any band I've ever seen.
If he likes electric Neil, "Year of the Horse" is very good.
