View Full Version : Speaker Patch Bay?

Anyone ever set up a patchbay so you could plug any head into any speaker cab? I've got my studio setup in the most primitive way...head to cab via a single cable, but since I have multiple cabs and heads I thought it would be great to have a more convenient setup.

My guess is there could be grounding issues so before I do something dumb I thought I'd see if anyone else here had tried it.

I didn't make a patch bay, but I made a 1:2 switch to select between 2 cabinets for my amp. It's just a metal box with a switch and 3 jacks, all common ground.

It works with many of my amps, but I remember running across one amp schematic a while ago where the speaker output wasn't ground referenced. In that case you might have an issue.

ampeg made an amp and cabinet selector.

8 different heads into 8 different cabs.

I got one, it is awesome

I think it would greatly increase your chances of accidentally runnning an amp with no speaker load...at least it would mine!

I think I saw one on Ebay. It does have a provision to protect a tube haed from running without a load, but only one or two, the rest are unprotected. It was the switchbox for ampegs displays.

I was just looking on ebay and didn't see any at the time, including completed auctions. If anyone knows where I can find one please post a link or let me know! Thanks again.

Amphog, the guy actually had 2 at the store and only one on Ebay. He sold me the other one and I'm set. Really appreciate it!

I think I'll do the tube amp mod to the other 6 channels so I can run all 8 of them without doing the whole standby/off thing in between. My tech is going to look at it next week.

Pretty cool device!

I passed on getting one from my local music store because of the 2 tube head limit. Good luck with the mod.

From what I hear it's a simple mod basically copying the first two channels. There are some big resistors and a few traces that need to be cut but any amp tech should be able to do it relatively easily from what I understand. I'll keep you posted.
