View Full Version : Who doesn't use modulation?

I've got a Nova Mod sitting on my board and although its cool, I find that I never use it. I'm mainly a dirt and delay guy. I don't even use my wah very often. I guess I have a hard time finding a place that I like to use it. But I always go to different sounding delays and dirt pedals. Is anyone else like this? I'm actually trying to deside if I should sell these two pedals if I don't use them.

Same here pretty much. Dirt n delay. Ive got a Corona chorus and a Malekko Phaser on the board in case we play.....umm....something that needs chorus or phaser, but 99.9% of the time its just Plexitone > DE7 > amp.

Dirt, Delay, and maybe a little trem here. The only exception is that I like a little bit of modulation on my delays, but as far as the dry signal, its pretty much dirt and delay.

I only play modulated delays and modulated reverbs, but I never use modulation as a stand-alone effect...I like a subtle phaser or vibe every now and then when I'm just jamming around, but I don't have a modulation spot slotted on my board.

Same boat. Delay, reverb, and a few dirt pedals is all my board consists of. I keep a wah sitting at home just encase. As for modulation, never been a fan. Tried chorus, tremelo, phaser, you name it and I didn't like any of em. Makes it sound less like a guitar to me. Sold em all. :) Keepin' it simple.

I don't like using modulation, with the exception of a vibe. I enjoy my deja vibe 2 very much, but nothing else seems to work for me. I like tremolo fine, but don't use it. I'm considering experimenting with a phase 45 on my secondary board, hopefully it will be subtle enough for me. I would never use modulation if I couldn't use a good univibe.

Dirt, Trem, Delay, Reverb. I initially thought not needing any mod pedals would make life easier/less expensive. Wrong, I just spend way more time trying to find perfect fuzz/od pedals.

Most recent person to use Chorus in a tasteful way was Kurt Cobain.

Pretty much same as everyone else here. No modulation on my board, just dirt and delay for me. Maybe a wah.

Sounds like you've found a league of comrades.

I use tremelo and some modulated delays, but haven't had a true modulation pedal on my board for a long time. Don't really care for it -- and I find that unless your entire style is built on a phaser, chorus or flanger, they are really just "accent" pedals and end up being overused and the result is boring, or underused and just collect dust.

I either use modulation that is set to being very subtle (slight mod effect in analog echoed repeats) or completely over the top (Machine Gun-styled univibe). No chorus, no phaser, no flanger, or rotary otherwise. I find that it thins out the sound of my guitar and it gets washed-out and lost in the mix considering that there is a 12string acoustic and another electric gtr playing rhythm. It sounds nice when I am on my own but I become dissatisfied with it at band practice.

I love Andy Summers' use of the variety of mod effects, though, but I suppose it's because there is no other frequency competition from other guitars.

Just a touch of my MXR Phase 100 every now and then for certain songs. It is THEE liquid Jerry pedal, and it is perfect for that use. Stuff like

Candyman
Waiting for a Miracle
Dear Prudence

Hmm, I think that's it. I never realized just how little I use it. It's a somewhat larger pedal too. Oh well, I am not redoing the pedal board AGAIN.

The only real modulation I use (outside of delay and reverb, that is) is tremolo. And even that comes out from the spring model of my SPACE these days.

VERY occasionally use some trem/vibrato or uni-vibe. Never use phaser chorus or flange anymore, but I almost always modulate my delays.

I gave modulation a chance, doesn't work for me for the most part. Only thing I can stand is phaser and uni-vibe

I'll use chorus just a little bit but with the speed turned all the way down. Not even the slightest knotch of speed. With just a little depth. But I only use a chorus only on the smallest occasions. You'll be lucky to hear me use a chorus in a song. I do like tremolo though. I'll use trem alot in verse on a clean channel, take it off during a chorus with some dirt.

But I'm mainly a delay, dirt and reverb guy. Not a big fan on the modulation. Never have liked using a phaser or flanger. Its fun to goof off sometimes but never in a song.

I've never really used it other than some trem, but I just added a small clone to see how it goes.

I did some home recordings and used chorus on a build up and it really added something to the riff, so I thought maybe I'd get a chorus pedal for jollies and see what happened... the jury is still out.

I've pretty much gone full circle. The vast majority of my playing has been limited to a gain pedal and whatever was on the amp - usually Fenders, so reverb and trem. Tried a bunch of stuff with a project about three years ago and found that I can use a vibe or phase once in awhile and it can add something good, but I turn it on so seldom it's hardly worth hauling around, and it's not really consistent with who I am as a player. So now it's down to a delay with modulation and a trem and it's more than enough.

Yep. I'm down to, well check my sig.

Bought a trem, sold it.
Bought a wah, sold it.
Had a Diamond comp, sold it.

Turns out I'm less of a pedal guy than I thought.

Only use the modulation that's on my carbon copy for delays. Otherwise, no need for modulation effects.

I use a Micro Vibe in my solo's from time to time or to make chords sound washy and swirly, but that's in a rare situation. I use the wah to get funky, and I have two delays but rarely use them for anything besides single note runs or for teh strange. I'm an OD fiend.

This guy! I even have a M9, but there's only reverb and delay on my settings. Occasionally, I'll use trem and wah, but very rarely. If I'm using my Mesa, then I'll often just put my El Cap in the loop. I should post that on the minimalist boards I guess!

No offense to chorus lovers, but I loathe it. It can be super subtle, but it just bugs me. I absolutely hate it with drive. I like King's X, but I cringe when I hear Ty's lead tone with chorus. Just my opinion.

Mod pedals are weird to me...I'd like to have one of everything, but I've spent so much time working on my base tone that I can't just slap on an effect that masks it or alters the EQ or dynamics...which they ALL seem to do. I think every mod pedal should have a mix knob and a transparent dry-through. This could be done with something like the Wetbox or Line Selector, but it just ain't worth spending the cash (which I don't have anyways).

That said, I'd add a leslie to my rig in a second. They color the tone bigtime, but they're worth it.

i have a pareidolia that does everything i want a modulation pedal to do, and it can be super subtle.

sometimes modded delay.

that's it for me. i've bought and sold chorus, phasers, and flangers, and finally realized that i don't use them, so they are all gone.

fuzz, OD, and delay for me. i used to be a HUUUGE dork for flangers & choruses back in the day but not really at all anymore. my amp has vibe & verb in it, but i seldom use it. seldom use the wah or POG2 as well.

I'm moving away from heavier mod myself. I can get TONS of great sounds on the fly out of my El Cap and Supa-Trem: warble, verb, pulsings, etc. For vibrato I just string-bend or flex the necks on my Tele or PRS. I'm real dig the "effect as extension to the instrument" thing instead of something to be applied on top of.

This coincided with a new amp that has astounding 3D presence: the Carr Hammerhead in 2x12 config. Perhaps this is a driving factor?

I still have some great mod pedals like the remarkable Hartman flanger and Dr. Sci Cosmichorus but neither stay on the board. They're more for stuntman work :)

TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger. A bunch of other modulation options on my Time Factor, Pitchfactor and AdrenaLinn III. Especially useful for chords.

Clifford-D
08-19-2011, 10:17 AM
chorus = mild delay + subtle neck bending ala Bill Frisell. This creates the pitch offsets needed for chorus.

The nice thing about creating chorus this way is it's there when you want it for two seconds and not when you don't.

And it's a beautiful chorus effect, very natural.

Clifford-D
08-19-2011, 10:27 AM
Also with this neck bending with delay chorus effect is the type of delay used.

The neck bending creates the offsets needed for chorus but the delay can have its own special effect. For example using a reverse delay will still create the chorus effect but with a special effect in the chorus.

Delays come with all sorts of special effects making for some crazy chorus alchemy.

I'm pretty much dirt and delay, also. I've pretty much stopped taking my Crybaby to the jams. The one (big) exception is that I will bring the Mini Deja-Vibe with me from time to time. Lately, however, I've just been going straight into my amp.

Just sold my chorus pedal because it wasn't getting much use in the band. I feel that the EP booster will get more use.

If anything, I'd like to try out a vibe in my rig.

I have chorus, vibe and tremolo (waiting for the trem) on my board, but I really use them on a couple of songs...I play in a classic rock cover band, so I try to use some effects on songs, like "born on the bayou"...that has some tremolo, I think that's the only song where I use tremolo LOL

But I'm really thinking on getting rid of them, maybe just leave the chorus, which i use very subtly

well, I did an "experiment" at last night gig, we recorded in video the gig with two cameras, and had one by my side, and I put it where I could lightly see my board, so I could check it later how much my pedals really get used...well, we played 42 songs yesterday and my Deja Vibe was used on two, my tremolo in two, chorus on 10.

I love my deja vibe, but I think there's no way I can justify having it on my board for a couple of tunes.

Maybe I'll sell that pair of pedals and get a switching system like a MOEN, Cusack or something like that...that I'd really use

Why is everyone obsessed with delay here? My God. Have some variety for crying out loud. I personally love modulation. I feel incomplete without my phaser and flanger. I rarely use my delay. It pretty well just collects dust. Bandwagons do happen, but I think it's just the cycle of where music is. You like classic rock and it uses more mod. Delay is in for many styles of music now. I always fear that in 10 years we're gonna say, "what were we thinking?!" I like mod (and delay for that matter) on certain parts but not always thru a whole song. I think a good dry sound is beautiful, and then add effects for...effect. just my opinion - no offense to always on types or players

Very subtle modulation (just enough to tell).... sometimes.
Sometimes I want to add it.... and sometimes I don't.
I like having awareness of both scenarios.
I hear others use it and fully appreciate it in what they're doing... in the style/s they play in. But for me in playing jazz... subtle fits and rules. And sometimes I want it a flavor of things and others not.

I am mainly od and delay. I do have a tremolo on my board, but it only gets used now and then. I would like to get a uni-vibe, but don't want to spend that much on a pedal that will get used sparingly.

No modulation for me... Mostly just different degrees of dirt and a delay pedal. I have a wah only because I have to for cover tunes. I do like a nice phaser from time to time. But I hate doing the tap dancing on stage, so it got booted off of the board.

I have a very strong dislike for modulation, unless that includes trem. Chorus, to me, takes away from the tone of a guitar so I don't use it.

I like modulation, but the pedals always just screw with my tone too much. I get a very subtle mod sound out of the repeats from EP3 toneprint on the Flashback delay, which is acceptable because of that pedal's analog dry-through. But I'll use modulation a lot more when I can afford a real rotary cabinet to run in parallel with my main amp!

I play hardcore and metal in one band and industrial/metal in another band so Im pretty much a delay, wah and distortion guy too. In both bands I use lots of delay, a slight amount of reverb, amp distortion instead of pedal distortion, and alot of wah- mainly on solos. I do have a chorus and flanger pedals on my board but they dont get used much- I use the chorus for some thickening on a few rythym parts or for a solo or two as well as on clean parts; the flanger is used on a few rare solos, rare clean parts, or an even rarer full song. No phaser or any other modulation effects pedals are on my board.

I haven't used modulation for some time now. I've only been getting back into pedals lately as I need to turn down a little for some situations. For a long time I only used a wah and a booster into a cooking AC15 and used the volume control to clean up the signal. Even the wah I used as a tone filter as opposed to the traditional 70's porn styles.
