I'm sitting in the basement 5 minutes ago, and the chair starts rolling back and forth like I'm on a boat. I look up through the window frame and the house is rocking back and forth. I ran outside and seconds later other neighbors were around. Wow.
Any other LI members feel this?

It's the same earthquake being felt all over the North East.
Calm down, but watch out for those falling bricks. :knitting

Never had the experience even after being on the island for so many years, however, hurricanes are lurking out there and it has been since 1985s hurricane Gloria that makes the island well overdue for a storm.
yes, felt here in NJ (all over the state). epicenter in No VA/DC area.

No damage. Checked the chimney which is old and actually has needed repointing for a while. My dogs started barking!

Poor babies. In California, a 5.9 wouldn't even spill my Chardonnay. :roll

Hey Doug, felt it here in Valley Stream! I was napping on my couch and it felt like someone was shaking me to wake me up. I got up and look at the windows and the blinds were swawing back and forth. It only lasted for about 30 seconds or so...very strange!

In terms of damages and size of impact zone, the west coast is minor league because soil is a lot different in the east. The New Madrid, Missouri earthquake was felt over an area of 50,000 square miles. The comparable San Francisco earthquake was felt over a mere 6,000 sq. mi. If the Mississippi River basin gets an earthquake like that again, it will make the great San Francisco quake look like a fender bender.

LOL!!!!
I live twenty minutes from the epicenter. It was on a lesser known fault called the Spotsylvania fault. It rocked us pretty good.
BUT...
Having never been through a California quake I couldn't compare. I can just tell you that it wasn't too good of a feeling.

85...a tree fell on the road in front of me and I drove right into it...if I was going faster...right on me.

yup - '85. We flew over it returning from our honeymoon. It was weakened considerably by the time it hit CT, but we still had quite a few trees down, and I remember being reprimanded by the police for walking out on the breakwater in Old Saybrook. What are you stupid kid?

Duh!
Not even '65, I was confusing it with Donna in '60.
