View Full Version : in need of s dark/fat boost
Well I am a bass player, and I just bought a Vanamps Reverbamate. I have the Reverbamate in a TB loop, and I want to put a good DARK boost after it to beef of the tone and to bring it up a few dB's. Here is what I need:
1. lots of bass and low mids, reduced highs - nice and dark.
2. capable of a good amount of CLEAN volume - 20db's or so.
3. It doesn't necessarily need to be a "clean boost", it could be a OD pedal that can be coaxed as a clean boost. Ala the Barber LTD (I have one but its not loud enough in this setting).
4. smallish footprint
5. in the $90-$120 range.
The vampamps is freaking great, I just like my verb loud and dark...
Cheers, and thanks.

The AnalogMan Beano Boost has an awesome "deep" setting. How it would sound for your bass, I don't know!

alex, talk to me about the modded bd-2 i'm selling. it makes an amazing, versitile, fat, dark boost.
K, mssg me when your online...
ALSO:
I would really prefer some sort of tone control... As I really do want to darken and beef up the tone...

I have talked to nick about that a few times, I think I may eventualy get one - but not for that pourpos. As at the level I need it to be run at it will surely introduce some grit. Plus, I really need some tonal control.

I really dislike his build quality, and again - no tone control.

Really?.. Wow, I thought the Beano was a straight Treble Booster... Hmmmm, I will have to e-mail Mike about that... How much treble is reduced in the "deep" mode?..
thanks,

i have to say, i was REALLY confused as to what you were responding to (normally, i'm used to seeing "quote" and THEN response)...

Why not a RC Boost? You can just turn the treble knob down if you want it darker.
Fixed... But you didn't need to be so snide... It was a simple editing error... :(

you spelled "editing" wrong. ;)
sorry...i prolly meant to put a :-) after the whole deal but it was late in my day and i wasn't feeling as jolly. ;)

Actually... My "D" key sticks... But enough of that.
I am currently thinking about the Toadworks Meat, or a Hellbilly - does anyone know if the Hellbilly can do 100% clean stuff with the gain @ zero?.

Nope, not 100% clean. If you want fat and dark, with a tone control, the two best choices (IMO, of course) are the Fireman FX Baron Boost or the HAO Rust Booster. Either would work.

why not use a Sansamp bass DI or Sadowsky DI?
Too much for what I want... I just want a simple dark boost - not a DI and various other options... But thanks man.

The Baron dosn't sound like it would fit the cake, and the HAo has no tone control!!! :p
But, I was hoping to find somthing from you Brad... So if you can think of anything let me know, as I prefer to buy from you when it comes from the states...
cheers

What about a BJF berry, or a Sea Blue EQ?
or some other kind of EQ pedal, I think Boss has a digital EQ pedal for around 130 bucks.
There's also someone on the net that builds a "sniper" Boss EQ
seems like that could give you the volume you seek and the tone you desire.

It's been a while since I've used the Rust Booster. Guess I forgot what the other knob was for. :)
I still think the Baron might suprise you.
How dark are we talking here??

Funny that no one has mentioned it yet, but the Fulltone Fat Boost seems to be exactly what you're looking for. I tried it out on the bass and it thickened the tone nicely. The bass player in my old band tried it out on the bass and he loved it and bought one right after that.
I don't know if that would be dark enough for you if you're talking about boosting the bottom end.
There's also the Xotic Tri-logic Bass Pre-amp pedal for $240.00 which looks interesting. I don't know it's boost range, but it would give you more control over the tone. . .

I was thinking about the Fat Boost, as I do know that it works well on bass. But again, out of my curent price range... As I just spent over 400cdn for the Reverbamate - anything over 120usd will really seem wastefull - as I am ONLY using it to boost the reverb signal, nothing elese...
cheers

Ah, okay. Understand the price thing. You might want to look into the Barber LaunchPad
http://www.barberelectronics.com/LaunchPad.htm
It's not a dark boost but doesn't brighten your signal. You can email Dave and see if he can tweak one to give you a darker sound.
Brett
Hmmm, I was using my LTD to do the job but it wasn't loud enough... I am however now thinking about the New Barber EQ, he said that he can voice it like a Ampeg B-15 - and that would be PERFECT! But he can also voice it like a Bassman, so I need to make my mind up...

Bob McBrooms Slow Burn is the most meaty (as in big sounding) OD I`ve heard. Probably more bass and low mid on tap than in most any other pedal.
Treble can be rolled off completely. Lots of volume if needed.
I have two; a three knob version (the original) and a two knobber. I`m talking about the three knobber here.
Not many made, a used one would be in your price range but Bob might also make a new one for you.
Hmmmm, what parameter is the 2 knob version lacking?.. And how clean can it get with the gain all the way down?..
I have never seen one, did Bob ever realeas it to any dealers?..
cheers, and thanks

you could try the demeter mid-boost...can put a lot of punch across and definitely does NOT add treble to your guitar...i find it really fattens out my sound.

The Slow Burn was a limited run, a deal Bob had with musicgearsource.com, just like the Bender. Though I bought the Slow Burn directly from Bob.
If interested you can mail Bob at mcbroomsRUs@cs.com.
The two knobber is lacking the tone knob and there`s some twist to the circuitry. The three knobber sounds bigger, has more bass and lower mids. The pedal can get very "clean" with gain all down and level up but the tone gets darlker as the gain is turned down. The tone knob is more of a high pass filter, I think.
I`m soon off to another nightshift but if I have time I`ll try it with a bass into a DI.
A picture and some info here;

I checked a couple of pedals using a Fener P-bass into pedals into a Gascooker DI into mixer.
The Slow Burn sounds fatter and bigger than the BD-2. Has much less of a pedal feel. Very nice crunch/OD sounds with bass. Some might want more of a treble bite.
The Prescrtiption RX Overdrive has a lot more gain than the two above. More headroom and the active treble and bass controls make it a very flexible pedal. Lots of bass (and treble) boost or roll-off available.
Quiet. When overdriving the treble musst be rolled off to avoid fizz when DI recording.
But for your purpose; The RX Overdriver will give you lots of dB before any crunch and a very active EQ section for bass and treble boost or roll-off.
Not cheap, around $180 new. But used it should be in your price range.
