Yep - still no power. Going on 30 hours - and I'm STILL not panicked. :)

I actually kind of dig it. No power, no computers, no noise. Sure the food in the refrigerator is spoiling, but hey, it's all part of the experience.

How am I online? Macbook Pro with its kick-ass 7-hour battery life tethered to my iPhone. It won't last forever, but it's a fix. :)

I actually enjoy the serene quiet of the post-storm air when the power is out. Well, I used to. Now I have to listen to the obnoxious note of my neighbor's generator. I can't even see my neighbor (we live in the woods), but his generator just hums along like a lawn mower running 24x7. No one consumes more power than me - I have a server farm in my garage and seven other computers in the house - but I refuse to pray to the god of power. Needless to say, my wife covets their generator.

Last night we played Chess and Scrabble and cards, all by candlelight while being serenaded by the steady drone of my neighbor's Home Depot generator.

I need to go fetch some water from the creek so my wife stops using the 5 gal. Poland Spring bottles to flush the toilets. :messedup

No power in CT for over 24 hours now & it could be days before it's restored.

My wife has it worse, though. She's down in NC & they're well over 48 hours now & probably have several days more in front of them. I've lost touch with her now for over 24 hours.

No power since 2:15 am Sunday morning. Water is not affected. Neither is the stovetop (it's gas, so I just light it with matches). The only real annoyance is the lack of refrigerator/freezer. If it was just me and my wife, I wouldn't care; we'd just eat out all the time. But it's definitely more of a problem with a 4 yr old and a 2yr old in the house. Don't expect to have it back until the last half of week; hopefully I'm not being optimistic.

No power for 6 days after Katrina.....90-95 degree temps.

NO power for 4 days after Gustav....70-75 degree temps.......stuck on my road for 3 days due to flooding.

The temperature makes a WORLD of difference on how enjoyable the "roughin it" can be. :)

I always wonder about the generator thinking. Sure you can keep the food in your fridge, but wouldnt it be cheaper to let the food go, rather than spend $$ on gas? And besides, like the OP mentioned, the noise drives me insane.

Still down, most likely until tomorrow or Wednesday. The Mohawk and Hudson Rivers are now reaching flood capacity-- and in certain place have flooded-- so the power companies are prioritizing those areas for safety.

Lost it at 10 am yesterday. not expecting it back for days from what I hear. I am one of those aholes with a generator but I have a fridge and additional freezer with food to feed my family of six, don't really want to rebuy all that stuff and my basement will flood without the pump.

I haven't plugged my amp into it though........can't say the idea hasn't been swimming around in my head.

My Dad lives in Waverly VA, an old Army buddy in Newport News - they're both saying likely 2 weeks before power is restored. At least they have generators.

That's how long it took after the last hurricane that hit my Dad's area (Isabel) too, not fun at all when it's 90 degrees.

You don't have to run your generator 24/7 to keep your food safe. Its not a bad idea to give the gen a rest for a few hours while you sleep. Its not hard or expensive to rig a improvised sound deflector with stuff you have laying around. Be careful not to restrict air flow around the unit for cooling though. In a urban or suburban environment you can only do so much but if you have some space between dwellings you can really make a difference.

7pm. Still no power. Got the grill fired up. Found some ice. Found some beer. No generator next door all day.

Went to Starbucks to mooch some power. It was PACKED. No suprise. So we tooled around a bit while the inverter charged stuff in the car.

Fired up the tractor and filled up some jugs of water for the toilets. Thats good livin' right there!

As for flashlights, I have many. I mock those who panic that they dont have any while the storm is upon us. I have enough candles, glowsticks, flashlights and lithium batteries to last a month.

Its funny. For the most part, I don't miss the Internet (he says on the Internet with his iphone)

It's amazing how long my acoustic rings in the absolute quiet.

Day three without power.

My kids have come to actually like it, since we sit around the candles at night and play games as a family. I'm starting to think that power is over-rated. Well, except for the hot showers. I wouldn't mind a hot shower.

It's so easy to get distracted by our latest electronic toys. Not being able to use them for about 99% of the day puts things into perspective.

I'm in Smithtown, LI. We got hammered. There are tons of trees down. Apparently, the majority of the LIPA customers have no power. Rumor is 95% of the customers will have power by Friday or Saturday.

I live in a community where the house are 40 feet apart. My neighbor's son is in a wheelchair. I believe he was a fireman and was injured on the job. They have 5000+ square foot home and a generator that can run the whole house. There's an elevator going from the basement to the 2nd floor and a therapy pool in the basement. This generator is very loud and basically shakes my house. It is very tough to get some rest, but I will never complain.

Out since around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. My town and all surrounding towns are 100% dark. 22 poles down and 85 streets closed due to downed lines or trees. I still haven't seen any crews out working, though the town got some of the trees cleared out of the main routes in and out of town. I sent the wife and daughter up to my in-laws who had power, but then they lost it around midnight last night when a transformer blew. I'm holding down the fort with the animals. Bathtubs full, plenty of batteries and bottled water. Power's on at work, so I can shower here. Not so bad really. It's an inconvenience, but could have been so much worse.

Still no power here, which is what... day four? One more day and it will be the longest we've been without power in the 15 years we've lived here.

Hauled all the spoiled food up to the curb in the very full garbage container yesterday. That pissed my wife off. She is now talking about getting a built-in generator so it never happens again. We'll see what she thinks of the price tag when the power is back on.

I am on day four with no power also. My whole town is pretty much still out. If I did not have a three year old i guess it wouldn't be that big of a deal other than all the food I threw away. Having lived through the Blizzard of '78, Gloria, Bob, and a dozen other tropical storms, blizzards and Nor'easters, I must say I am utterly perplexed as to why it is taking so long to restore power from this storm. The damage in my area is not that bad. I am guessing it's because National Grid laid off it's groundlevel workers and cancelled preventative maintenance programs to boost profits...

Still out here, going on close to day 5. I too remember Blizzard '78 (week sort of I was only six! :)), Gloria and Bob and some ancillary nasty tree breaking t-storms and nasty nor'easters living on the shoreline and I've never seen it like this. I am still thankful no house damage, family is doing well and we have running water but I'm starting to get irritated. I can look out my window and see power right down the road from me, people who never lost it during or after the storm. No sign of utility trucks in my locale. Nothing but lip service from the power company. I know there are crews out there working busting their asses for us, I have nothing but utmost respect for the guys on the scene such as the linemen and the tree removal service people. They are risking their lives for us. What I don't have respect for is how the power company themselves is handling this altogether. There are running kudos and complaints running on Facebook everytime the local news posts something about power restoration progress. Some of those that are complaining have legitimate gripes and there are those who will argue with them telling things could be worse, you're lucky to have your home, you had plenty of time to prepare etc. All valid arguments but I offer this, the power company had plenty of time to prepare for this too. We were told all week it was coming and the storm ended up being less severe than what was predicted for CT. So I have to ask, what did the power company really prepare for, a rain storm with a little wind???? It was supposed to be a Cat 1 storm when it hit the CT shoreline, it hit us as a tropical storm, a pretty destructive one for sure but what if we did get sustained 90+ MPH winds and the flooding??? What we talkin Armageddon, no power for months??? Back to the stone ages??? My god. It's easy for me to Monday morning quarterback how this should've played out but it sure seems to me they got caught with their pants down on this one and now we all suffer. Sure I could've bought a big ass generator before the storm but quite frankly, the media set the panic mode off and there was no way of getting one anyways around this area in a timely manner. And then I read in a local paper today the headlines of how much the proposed cost to fix this is and that the power company will try to get it back which could mean future rate hikes. Now I live in the real world, I know utilities are in the business to make money not give it away and something has to pay the pricetag but man, when there are almost 300,000 people in CT still without power, don't come out with the "here's the cost to cover the repairs which we will most likely lass on to you and yes I know you don't have power and we don't know when you'll be getting it"

Sorry, I'm just venting, things could definetely be a helluva lot worse and if these are my only problems, then things are good.

When Ike hit down here we didn't have power for a month. My university opened up the following Tuesday since they have their own water and power plants, but didn't require students to come back immediately if effected by the storm. So I slept on an air mattress in our dark room, woke up and showered in the gym across campus, went home and did work on the house, went back to school to sleep, use the internet and repeat. My power was out from about 10 pm till about 8 the next morning. Would not have been an issue but the sump pump needs it. So had to fire up a generator or else the basement would have flooded due to a high water table. So was up for 24 hours. I suggested getting a generator, hell of a life saver. The phone was out till today oddly, they seems to fix that faster normally

I was out for 8 days after Isabel on well and septic.

On the 8th day, my good friend let me borrow his portable generator.
I got home, nearly broke my back unloading it and then pulled my arm out
getting it to start.

I finally untangle my 100 foot extension cord bend down to plug it in
and the lights came on.

After a few more long outages,
I finally bought a good Porter Cable portable generator and that
seems to have acted like an insurance policy since then.

I've only been out 3 times and each time for less than 24 hours.
It's great being able to keep the basics going when the power does go out.

Irene was pretty much a non-event up here on the mountain,
but the further South you go and the more Easterly you go,
there was major damage.

Top winds up here only reached maybe 30 MPH and I'm at 1050 foot elevation,
so flooding is not an issue.

Where I live in the NW, we frequently get trees falling over the power lines. Sometimes happens several times a year. My wife and I break out the candles and the acoustics and have fun. Stay safe, my prayers are with you.

Makes you wonder why they didn't start burying power cables and transformers sooner than they did and many many communities still have telephone poles with wires that are susceptible to tree limbs and wind.

I work for PSE&G here in NJ. We restored over 790,000 customers within one weeks time. The co. brought in 1500 linemen, and 300 tree crews to get the work done. This is on top of our own people. We all worked 16 hour shift's from Sunday till friday. The only customer's still without power are inaccessible due to severe flooding. Once the water recedes we'll get them back too...

Kudos to you!

I think NJ did a remarkable job restoring power. It seems, based on what I've heard & the numbers involved, NJ was better prepared than NY or CT. The flooding in NJ was really incredible, as were parts of NY, VT, etc. Nothing you can do if you can't get to the impacted areas, but I'm sure that was a helluva week on the job that you & your co-workers won't forget anytime soon.

Good point, but I'm guessing many did do cost analysis on this & deemed a few storms per year worth the risk. I'm referring to older neighborhoods here, not newer subdivisions which would be foolish not to bury the cabling as they're constructed.

I was surprised by this when we moved to CT because there are a ton of trees, many of them huge & I didn't notice any areas where cabling was not visibly above the streets. But, then again... it's such a densely populated area at least where I am in Fairfield County. I can't imagine how much $ it would cost to transition... which is probably a moot point now given the financial shape of most towns, counties, states, etc.
