View Full Version : Old blue Fuzz Face - can you help identify this?
I recently acquired the following Fuzz Face.
I'd like to be able to find out more about it. Such as, AGE, version and maker.
Photograph below. including box. (sorry, no better pics or gut shots available yet.)
It says "Dallas-Arbiter England" on the smile.
It's blue, but NOT the a blueish/grey hammerite blue. It has black knobs with indentations for the fingers. It has white text on it.
I wondering if it may be, either:
1. an early 1970s vintage one.
2. a Crest Audio (Dave Fox) one. late 1980s? 1990s?
3. something else.
If there's any Fuzz Face fans or experts out there, any information would be great.
Thanks!

There are the fox crest audio and the 1976 crestaudio they made after the bought Dallas. I have a 76 that has the same box. My blue seems a bit lighter, might be the camera. the crest 76 FF have a thicker shell , the sides are about a 1/2 more than early and latter FF. The other ways to tell are the date codes on the pots or the Trannies Bc109 for 76 and Bc108 for the most part on the 69-75 the fox ones were 108 IIRC.
How does it sound

Thanks. I haven't received it yet, so can't test or examien yet. But I shall check the internals for dates when I do.
I gather it's in mint, unused condition. Was owned by some old bloke.
Do you know if it's true that the Dave Fox / Crest ones of the 1980s/90s used new-old-stock 1970s boxes? I think I may have read that somehwere. If so, then the box doesn't help date my pedal, I guess.

Based on that one pic I'm saying 86-90 Crest Audio Fuzz Face "reissue" and FWIW, that colour blue is, according to Dave Fox "rare"...
looks just like my Crest audio fuzz face.

There is an article on the net Fox wrote about his efforts there pretty interesting. he" seems" to trash the ones he did not do (1976) based on one he found in the wharehouse in the 80's. I know he is a guru n all but my experience with the New Jersey made Si FF, makes wonder if he was a Newbie with fuzz stage: plug it in use it like a tube screamer and instant jimi. They sound amazing, got a lot of big name FF clones but the crest is the best. Interested in how the 80's sound , now if these 80's FF are 1/2 as nice as the one i got YOU GONNA BE ONE HAPPY son of a gun.
Saw one at a guitar show for 250 and passed. Should have tried it out.

Could very well be a Dunlop. You won't know until you open it up.Pot codes vary I have one that has a 91 and 93 CTS pot in it.Dulop usually has a lot of overspray inside the case too. They had the same box and instruction sheet.By the way These two sound very good.

You might want to read the article again or at least link it for reference.

The transisitors are BC109c.
I've sent some pics to Dave Fox to see if he can verify it as a Crest Audio one.
