For literally years, I've been hunting for a good articulating magnified desk lamp. I hate the springs that most of them have, and the lenses in most of them are cheap green glass that distorts like crazy. I found this one that my wife subsequently got me for my birthday:

With a 7" lens, no visible springs, a great light, and a cool neck joint, this thing will be killer for working on pedal guts, soldering guitars and all the other tiny things my pathetically old eyes have trouble seeing any more.
It wasn't cheap, but the image through the big lens is fantastic with no coloration, there is NO flicker from the light (which is bright as Hell), it articulates with ease, and stays in place when positioned. I've looked at scores of these stupid things, and this is one of the few models I found that didn't suck. The head is light thanks to the XR lens, and it can easily be positioned with one hand.
