There seems to be a mix of a little of every thing right now.
Any one know some new bands that are getting popular, creating a buzz that every one should check out. There are a lot of new releases out these days maybe more than ever but it seems harder to find good new music.

Depends on what you're into. What inspires me may very well not inspire you. Popularity is harder to gauge these days too, as the rock scene as a whole is pretty fractured. Muse seems to get a lot of critical acclaim, and seem to be kind of carrying the torch for big, epic, hard rock. They've been around awhile now though. Kings of Leon were on their way too, but I think they're just going to implode from stupidity.
I personally really like Black Mountain, and think if more people catch on to them, they have some potential for big success. Their last album was probably my favorite last year. You might want to check out White Denim if you want something a little challenging but still fun. A band I think deserves a lot more acclaim is The Whigs. They aren't doing anything particularly mind-blowing, but they write great songs and are very solid performers. Fleet Foxes are my overall favorite new artists. Perhaps more folk-rock than actual rock and roll, but just great stuff. Band of Horses is really good. I could go on, but without knowing what you like, I could very well be wasting my time.

Success nowadays is often happening by artists side-stepping the record label industry and cashing in on the profits that the artist truly owns.
Basically, a lot of the good stuff is out there, just not on the radio or Billboard reports. Word of mouth is golden.

I like The London Souls, their debut record is really hot. I also dig Pomplamoose.

Thats the thing, the radio is pretty much dead for finding new music.

Oh, and for the record...
The new Kaiser Chiefs album is excellent. 'Little Shocks' is the new single.
Also, Band of Horses is really quite good. Primal Scream's new album is great, as well.

For good 'ol Americana w/ an edge I think the National is the best band playing today. Certainly not the newest, but one of the few bands who are truly in their prime right now and will likely stand the test of time. Modern, but absolutely timeless rock music with soul.
As for the very latest hot new thing I'm sure everybody's answer is gonna be different. I don't think there is anybody out there inspiring any kind of new revolution or anything. Its been a while since a debut album really turned my head... that was probably Antlers' "Hospice" which they've now followed up with the almost-as-good "Burst Apart"
Really digging the new Cymbals Eat Guitars, but again that is their sophomore album too.
Two words...

The Black Angels are pretty darn good. Radiohead's new album is fantasic, IMHO. JEFF the Brotherhood might be the best group I have heard in a looooong time.

+1 on Band of Horses, Whigs, Delta Spirit, and Fleet foxes.
I'll add:
Dawes
The Head and the Heart
Deer Tick
Middle Brother (Dawes, DeerTick, Delta Spirit supergroup)
Blitzen Trapper
And though he's far from new, M Ward is a god.
Also, I find it odd to hear National described as Americana. I love them, but that's not the descriptor I would use.

Old thread, but I'll revive if possible.
Right now, I'm thinking the following:
The Black Angels
Band of Horses
My Morning Jacket
Wilco
The Sheepdogs
People may argue against the Wilco thing, but they have all of the elements in my opinion. No, they may not rock out like they did in the earlier days but have much greater depth and sonic texture than most of what I'm hearing these days.
There are more, but these are the ones getting the most action on my ipod at the moment.

If "popular" means mass media and radio play, that's one thing... but there's long been an "underground" music scene in a sense... Metal... progressive Rock.. Indie etc... You might remember "alternative"... well it became "mainstream"...
Many of these bands I'm going to list make more money then most "popular" bands... so here goes.. New music to you maybe? A lot of these bands have been around quite the while.... But many people just don't know of them... and there's more.. but here is a short list of a variety of styles...
Symphony X
Big Big Train
Wobbler
Atrium
CCLR
Comedy Of Errors
Motorpsycho
Solstice ( Britain )
Mostly Autumn
Magenta
As well many of the 'ol bands of worth are still active and playing....
Caravan
BJH ( Barclay James Harvest )
Nektar
Yes
Supertramp
etc etc....
side note... Heather Findley used to be in Mostly Autumn and left a roundabout a year ago... You might like looking into her stuff these days, as good and well...
There's many many many more where this came from but with a foot in this door, you'll find most of 'em.... There's always been an "off the radar" music thing going on and I've always found it where the music is at, for the most part. It's a huge realm... Welcome... it's that o way----------->
