View Full Version : R8 necks have spoiled me for others

About six months ago I picked up an R8 ('98 Yamano) Historic Les Paul. For years I'd been trying to find a guitar with a neck similar to my '59 Junior, and this was it (and a great guitar to boot).

Recently I picked up a second R8. Problem is, I have some other great guitars that no longer feel "right". In the back of my mind is the thought that I'll someday get one good Strat... but if I'm stuck in "fat neck mode" I don't see it happening.

Anyone find themselves in a similar situation? I'm already kind of screwed by having gotten used to .011's... whenever I'm called to play someone else's guitar, those .009's feel like rubber bands.

i know how you feel, except mine is an R6. the AVRI 62 hot rod strat has a pretty big neck on it and is a great strat...

I like the R9 necks best. I could only find lightweight R9's, and they were all kinda twangy sounding. I ended up with an R8 tho'. I never really got used to the neck but I play it anyhow, it sounds good.

+1 on the AVRI '62 -- massive neck, IMO. Can be had at really low prices, too!

Almost all of my guitars have bigger necks on them but there are a couple, though not thin by any means, are smaller, and I went through what you have and find that i cycle well between the two types and it feels right to me as well.

Going back and forth seems to do that.

Yeah, there's something about a beefy neck that just feels good in your hand. Love my R8.

Also: Strats with fat necks can be found. :D
