I'm working on a new model to add to my amp lineup. It's a small and simple clean/crunch 5watt amp head using a single-ended EL84. I'm not sure exactly how it's going to sound in the end, but I'm shooting for a smooth higher gain sound in the crunch setting, and a nice sparkly sound in the clean setting. I know most people will use their own cabinets, but I want to design and build a small 1x12 cabinet to match the head, for anybody who might be interested. And to also give me something to test the amp with.
So my question is what suggestions do you guys have for speakers that would go well with my new amp? Maybe something with higher efficiency to get a little more volume, but not too expensive so I can keep the price lower.

The sensitivity of Eminence is very high and may do the trick for you.
Eminence and WGS are both great speaker companies and their prices are very reasonable as well. Ask about being an OEM dealer if you're an amp builder

I've gotten suggestions from other people for Eminence and WGS as well. It sounds like they are the favorites these days. I've been looking around some, but a lot of websites don't give descriptions of the character of the speakers. If you are lucky, you might get a frequency response graph.
I think I'm looking for something with more of a mid and high end emphasis. I came across the Celestion Vintage 30 that seems to fit what I'm looking for. Any opinions about this speaker? Or any suggestions for specific other speakers with a similar character?

So I finally got time to seriously surf the web for speakers. I am really impressed with the selection and prices from WGS. Plus their website has clips to give you an idea of how the speaker sounds, and that is a definite PLUS in my book. I've decided to go with the WGS Retro 30 12". It's advertised as a Celestion Vintage 30 replacement. It sounds great and has the tone I'm looking for. AND it's half the price of the actual Celestion!
As a side note, their Black and Blue alnico 12" sounds AWESOME!!! It's pricey at $225, but I like the sound so much it makes me want to design an amp just for it. I think something Voxy would really make it sing.
Cosmo, after using many types of guitar speakers over the years, all my main amps now have WGS speakers in them ...IMHO, they are a big improvement over most models of Celestions.....Their speakers in real life sound WAY better than their clips

I've heard a lot of good things about WGS speakers and nothing bad so far. I'm really psyched to build this new amp and play it through the Retro 30. I ordered all the parts for the prototype last night. I'll post some sound clips when I get it finished and tweaked, hopefully in a few weeks.
