Hi Tomo,
The scenes still pretty good here overall...........
I've not heard any Earl Hooker to be honest. I've heard a little Ablert Collins, who's great. I guess the main man for me is still Robben, I love that jazz blues approach to the blues. I'll have to check out Earl.
Looking forward to hearing that new album of your's when it gets released.
All the best

Hi Woody,
Sorry for my late response. I have been working on my
new cd! I hope you can hear this in early 2006.
I teach many students who are big fan of Robben or
Carlton.... It's alright to just copy and study the style
,but (For me) it's important to understand how this
guy(in this case Robben) spent his life to achive his
sound, style and tone. =BLUES and JAZZ and a lot
of experiences.
So I usually recommend to listen to old blues.
(I just list less here... too many to list)
T-Born Walker "T-born blues"
B.B. King "Blues is king"
Albert King "Born under a bad sigh"
Freddy King "1934-1976"
Albert Collins "Trucking with Albert Collins"
Earl Hooker "Two bugs and a roach"
Muddy Waters "Live at Mr.Kelly"
Otis Rush "Cold in hell"
And Mike Bloomfield "Super Session"
"The live adventures of M.B. and Al Kooper"
Those were big influence on Robben.
I teach these and I teach bebop to my students.
Then I coarch how to cook these together.
Do you like Joe Pass? I am big fan of Joe Pass.
Listen to "Two for the road"
duet album with Herb Ellis. I would play like
these guys to get jazz blues thing.
West Coast blues:
I like Hollywood Fats "Rock this house"
Junior Watson "Long overdue"
more older blues...
Lonnie Johnson, Scrapper Blackwell,
Lightnin' Hopkins, Robert Nighthawk... much more.
Good luck!

Hi Tommo,
thanks for your response. I understand where you're coming from............
I guess I mislead you a little - What I mean't to say is 'the main man I like listening to for Jazz blues is Robben', but he's certainly not the only one. There are just so many great players 'Known' and 'unknown' to the public, that it would be foolish to get locked into listening to one or two players only.
Thanks for the recomendations I'll certainly check them out.
Looking forward to hearing your new CD

Hi Woody,
Sorry about that. It's difficult to perfectly communicate
through internet or email. Sorry about that. But we can
bring up some topics to talk about... that's fun for someone
to just read as well. Now I got what you were saying.
I love blue and jazz very much. I like Charlie Christian too.
"Rose Room" "Benny's bugle" are part of my jazz lesson
material. Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Barney Kessell,
those guys were influenced by Charlie Christian.
I also like many horn players. Chet Baker, Coleman Howkins,
Ben Webster.... those guys gave me how to use my breath
(space and pacing) and tone.
Thank you so much. I will let you know when my new cd
is available. Kenwood Dennard on drums, he enjoys my
funky rhythm guitar work.

Tomo,
Simply amazing playing all around.
You are just about the funkiest player I've ever heard, and I love funk.
If I could ask you......
What tips can you give me for getting those funky triplet type inflections in my strumming?
I love those super quick little trills that you do while funking out to a rhythm.
I was watching that video from the Fuchs, and your right hand just seems to effortlessly get those super speed trills.
I know you say it's more from the elbow, but it appears to be a combiation of elbow, wrist and pick...
The only people I have ever seen do that are you and Guthrie Govan.
So any tips that you can give to help us not so funky guys would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, what guage picks do you use???
And I WANT A CD...:D:D:D:D:D
Just amazing music my friend. I love it.

Hi Steve,
Thank you so much for your comment on my playing.
That means a lot for me. Thank you.
I am still working really hard about my time. I am not
happy yet about my time. It's really really tough to
master. I wish I could be better someday.
Many of my students asked me about my triplet funk
riffs.... Most guys can't play it right away, because
they don't have good foundation on right hand and
left hand muting skills. So you must practice many things
very very slow in order to play fast and precise.
I usually teach Rt 3 7 swing groove like exercise 13 on
my AYGP dvd. This will open up your funk skills.
Practice to use less pressure from your left fingers
as if you are holing paper... you should be able to hold
your chord without your left thumb too. Yes, keep
moving from your elbow first, do not use too much
wrist. this will cause unbalanced tone from strings.
Strum all strings even level... then you will use your wrist
to make more taste. Your less pressure left hand
and wide /big stroke from your right elbow are like
meat and vegetables. Then your wrist is like spices.
Just like a cooking. You need to know the exact taste,
but you can's hurry to cook it.
I have been doing that since I was 18.
Just... TA tatata... I can start from down or up stroke.
I should practice more. You really inspired me.
Thank you so much!
I use my Pickboy signature pick.
