View Full Version : Smooth Blues, my take and backing track - for the jazzy fusioneer inside you

Smooth Blues is a sort of swing/shuffle fusion with a blues bridge at eight last bars. I initially recorded it as a backing track idea for Add-a-track in Whole Note and encouraged by my friend Jim Heidinger (L5player) then I end playing some theme like lines that I hold becoming in a song finally. After composing I produced it in my home studio room by choosing the "easy way".. I did transcribe chords progression to Band in a Box basic tracks and exported to a midi file in Cubase where finally drums, bass and keyboards were edited/add some piano spices and assigned to quality sampled instruments in order to bring "life" to Band in a Box raw midi tracks.

Instrument/gear info: Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor archtop w/gibson 63 replacement pickup, for recording I like to blend digital amp modeling or Line 6 POD with external amp/microphone recording, I use PreSonus Blue Tube preamp direct to PC/digital modeling and Scarbee Vintage Keyboard FX blended with my external amp Yamaha t100c sound miked with a shure sm87.

Hi Carlos,

Thanks both for the excellent and emotional take as well as for the backing track. This is the kind of thing I've been looking for as an inspiration.

Man - that backing's just WAY too happy! ;)

Carlos, checked your clip above and some of your website - your clean toned work is just lovely. Kudos.

I'll admit to my bias of preferring jazz-related music w/ band interplay instead of backing tracks. So, any live clips, bro? Did I miss 'em?

Nice to see you here. Every success.

Playing live is helping a lot! I'm just playing a lot more than I used to that is for sure. I still need to come up with some practice routines to get my skills moving in the right direction. I got Jacks Book which is great but I need to spend time with it!

I recently picked up a Weber Mass attenuator to help me saturate the power tubes in my amp without blowing out the windows. This has created a lot of new opportunities for me sound and technique wise. Just scratching the surface but seems like I'm making a lot of progress. Every day I feel like a beginner! There is just so much to tackle. But that is what keeps it exciting. :)

Thank you Journo, part of that is my way of retribution for your high quality and inspirational backing tracks. This track is a bit on the robotic side, because I make it using band in a box for give a body to my initial song idea, of course, I use midi tweaking/edition and good samples for improve it, but generally I use to program or record live (or combination of both) for my music stuff, I play piano, then I use live midi input for instrument parts recording. I am looking for a real bass this days since I play bass enough for record in my own way. Thanks again Journo

Carlos, this was superb.....i salute you!!!:dude :dude :dude (triple-wow-avard)

smooth and classy!!! ....your backing track and your take is very inspiring for me....it will take a while until i'm ready to "hear" the melodic-structure and able to play my take! I'm not very familiar with the F7#5-mood yet....i have to practicing....but thats what i need, i need a inspiration to move on, learn something new and listen (cause i'm learning by ear only)

i guess i have to buy this "band-in-a-box software", looks like a very cool thing to generate some quick-backings (i worked with Emagic Logic 6.3.1 and the NI Kontakt virtual sampler, with tons of cool drum-sounds, basses and piano's/rhodes/wurli sounds, but i'm not a gifted keyboarder and somehow i need to focus on the guitar first, not on the backing.....guess this is the thing i need!)

you're an amazing player!!! Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you Paco, kind words I appreciate lot. I think you already are on the right way of inspiration and talent from I heard of you here in your posts.. excelent! :dude
Maybe Db Lydian can be fine over Fm7#5, or Gb lydian (with the maj7 that is F root note)...I confess myself also a bit lost at begin on that despite be the composer, since I wrote my stuff in both piano and guitar then I have to "translate" things between LOL.

. About BT and record stuff I have been musical productor and recordist from my early start, because that audio recording is a married item with my music career, I can see you are in the Mac side with the superb Emagic Logic, I quit from Mac some years ago by budget reasons and mainly because I become a tight Gigastudio (not mac version) user, I use Pro24 and Cubase from Atari days (1986) when also I have Creator (old ancient Logic). Kontakt with its libraries is a excelent software too. In the sampling side I mainly use Scarbee libraries for who I wrote demos, http://www.scarbee.com/news/2003.php I use for rhodes/wurli/clavinet (Scarbee Keyboard Vintage Collection ( Halion) bass (Scarbee Slapīn Fingered) and drum (SID Scarbee Imperial Drums) instruments altough I donīt discard the use of other great products out there like the impressive Spectrasonics Stylus RMX and some others VSTi (Steinberg virtual instruments) . ABout Band in a Box I use it from many years ago too, it always work as a excelent backing support for improvisation an instrument/musical practicing since here (or anywhere) get a live band for just practicing is not a easy task, but also I use the useful Jamey Aebersold play-a-along and others minus one series.
You donīt need to be a accomplished piano player fo making cool tracks in BBox since it just ask for text chord input from your QWERTY keyboard..for me BBox is a impressive learning help mainly in our formation stage..and always!.

Regards amigo

Carlos

Thank you to all by cool feedback and great support, Scott and Tag are right about there is more acoustical content in first take of SmoothBlues, I agree definitely, because that I did a third mix trying a more balanced content between electrical and the "wood taste" bundled in each archtop core. Mine is a budget Epiphone Joe Pass that own a distinctive electric vibe blended to archtop sound, fortunatelly a is a very well constructed guitar because is a prototype made in USA, barely one month after I bought it I did replace the original Epi fretboard mic with a Gibson 1963 pickup I got from a seriously damaged 335. Also, I think I did a mistake in the previous mix, I use the amazing plugin named Scarbee VKFX with its amp module active which is intended for bring a guitar amp vibe, now in this new mix I did bypass the module and leave just the preamp of plugin and add more from the external mic channel..and voila .. natural harmonics back to home ! ah also I did also add some strings in backing track at intro and some solo sections.

Ok guys, please educate me...

What do you play over these 24 bars? I donīt get it.....especially bars 5 to 12 are giving me headache. I canīt get it to sound right...

9 -12 F7sus - G minor (F mixo) seems to work..

15,16 D7#9 - D altered/ Ebmel minor
17,18 C7 - transition to F Blues
19,20 Bb7 - F blues

Chris,

LOL! You're not deaf!

I think I approached the tune much as you would, except that while my awareness of scales is there while playing, I try not to think "scalarly".

For the sus chords, I just treat as a dominant. In this tune, since the comping was pretty pronounced, and there were a few altered chords to address later on, I stayed pretty much inside for these.

For the Fm7#5 - FWIW, I couldn't really hear the need to address that sound from the backing either - what seemed to work for me was playing pentatonic ideas over the Gm7 that comes before, then trying to sort of continue that idea over the Fm7#5 using C minor pentatonic, which allowed me to continue the idea while nailing the #5.

Playing Melodic Minor over altered chords either a 1/2 step up or a 5th away has never worked as well for me as just fooling around with clusters of notes that contain the altered tensions, but always from a "root-up" perspective.

from the C7 on, yes, I'm feeling it like coming down from the V7 of a blues.

Rambling and cryptic enough for ya? :)

I'm a newbie here; just joined. Very impressed with the musicianship. Great to see some very different takes on a great backing track. I thought I would give it a try myself just for fun. It came out very fusiony (Is that a word?) following those chords. Anyway, if you'd like to give a listen it's at www.putfile.com/garyhartlin (http://www.putfile.com/garyhartlin) . I played a PRS into a bad monkey into my Dr. Z Maz Jr.

Thanks. Hope it's OK.

Hey russ6100,

Thanks for your help. I am getting there, but very slowly. Iīd love to get some decent lines and melodies together over these chords.

And thanks to Carlos for bringing this song up. Very challenging changes for me, which is a good thing.

@garyh: I canīt get your audio file to work. I *do* like your black orpheus version though. Nice tone....
